Geosynthetic reinforced earth wall was introduced about 20 years ago and many structures have been constructed. Especially, segmental concrete panel facing and friction tie system are the most popular system in Korea, and this friction tie was composed of high tenacity PET filament and LDPE(Low Density Polyethylene) sheath. Due to the lack of direct-test results, design coefficients of friction tie (creep reduction factor) had been determined by quoting the previous and the foreign reference data. This is an unreasonable fact for the use of friction ties. In this study, the creep tests were performed to evaluate the creep behavior of friction tie, and the reduction factor of creep was calculated for the correct design of geosynthetic reinforced earth retaining walls. From the test results, finally it was found that the allowable creep strength of friction tie is 60% of Tult during service life, and creep reduction factor is 1.67 for each grade of friction ties.
A series of shear tests is performed to measure friction coefficients of the interface between different reinforcements and weathered granite soils. The reinforcements tested are smooth steel strip, Paraweb(friction tie) and geotextile with rough surface, while the weathered granite soils are composed of different, grain size distribution. Soils are compacted with the energy of 95% modified AASHTO and fully saturated before testing to simulate the worst site condition. Because of characteristics of the direct shear apparatus, shear strength is obtained in terms of drained condition. Test results show that the more fines the soils contain, the larger ratio of friction coefficient ($\mu=\frac{tan{\delta}}{tan{\Psi}}$) is obtained. Also the ratios are much higher for the Friction tie and the geotextile compared to the smooth steel strip. Those suggest that even weathered granite soils with 36% fines are possible to use as backfill of reinforced earth structures for the two reinforcements when a drainage system is provided.
To date, many studies have been conducted for the analysis and design of reinforced concrete members with disturbed regions. However, prestressed concrete deep beams have not been the subject of many investigations. This paper presents an evaluation of the behavior and strength of three pre-tensioned concrete deep beams failed by shear and bond slip of prestressing strands using a nonlinear strut-tie model approach. In this approach, effective prestressing forces represented by equivalent external loads are gradually introduced along strand's transfer length in the nearest strut-tie model joints, the friction at the interface of main diagonal shear cracks is modeled by the aggregate interlock struts along the direction of the cracks in strut-tie model, and an algorithm considering the effect of bond slip of prestressing strands in the strut-tie model analysis and design of pre-tensioned concrete members is implemented. Through the strut-tie model analysis of pre-tensioned concrete deep beams, the nonlinear strut-tie model approach proved to present effective solutions for predicting the essential aspects of the behavior and strength of pre-tensioned concrete deep beams. The nonlinear strut-tie model approach is capable of predicting the strength and failure modes of pre-tensioned concrete deep beams including the anchorage failure of prestressing strands and, accordingly, can be employed in the practical and precise design of pre-tensioned concrete deep beams.

A strut-and-tie based method intended for determining the load-carrying capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) corbels is presented in this paper. In addition to the normal strut-and-tie force equilibrium requirements, the proposed model is based on secant stiffness formulation, incorporating strain compatibility and constitutive laws of cracked RC. The proposed method evaluates the load-carrying capacity as limited by the failure modes associated with nodal crushing, yielding of the longitudinal principal reinforcement, as well as crushing or splitting of the diagonal strut. Load-carrying capacity predictions obtained from the proposed analysis method are in a better agreement with corbel test results of a comprehensive database, comprising 455 test results, compiled from the available literature, than other existing models for corbels. This method is illustrated to provide more accurate estimates of behaviour and capacity than the shear-friction based approach implemented by the ACI 318-11, the strut-and-tie provisions in different codes (American, Australian, Canadian, Eurocode and New Zealand).

Recently, interest in Tie-cell wave-dissipating blocks that can compensate for the disadvantages of block-type breakwaters and provide economically effective design is increasing. Tie-cell wave-dissipating block has high activity resistance due to its structure in which each block is held together by a pile. In this study, through the laboratory model experiments, it was possible to confirm the increase in lateral resistance of the Tie-cell wave-dissipating blocks due to the penetration of the piles. The lateral resistance of the piles appeared almost constant regardless of the overburden load of the blocks. The lateral resistance shared by the piles changed depending on the increase or decrease in the lateral resistance of the friction between blocks. In the experiment in which two piles were penetrated, the overall lateral resistance was larger than the case a single pile was used, but the resistance behavior of the piles was different.
Recently, automatic transmissions caused a good improvement in the shift quality of a forklift. An advanced shift control algorithm, which was based on TCU firmware, was applied with embedded control technology and microcontrollers. In the clutch-to-clutch shifting, one friction element is released and the other friction element is activated. During this process, if the release and application timings are not synchronized, an overrun or tie-up occurs and ultimately leads to a shift shock. The TCU, which measures only the speed of the forklift, inevitably applies the open-loop shift control. In this situation, the speed ratio does not change during the clutch fill. The torque phase occurs until the clutch is disengaged. In this study, an offline shift logic of the learning control was proposed. It induced a synchronous shift when the learning control progressed. During this process, the reference current trajectory of the release clutch was corrected and applied to the next upshift. We considered the results of the overrun/tie-up characteristics of the upshift performed immediately before. The vehicle test proved that the deviation in shift quality, which was caused by the difference in the mechanical characteristics of the clutch, could be improved by the learning control.
The mechanical properties of timber construction have drawn more attention after the 2013 Lushan earthquake. A strong desire to preserve this ancient architectural styles has sprung up in recent years, especially for residential buildings of the mountainous areas. In the column-and-tie timber construction, continuous-tenon joints are the most common structural form to connect the chuanfang (similar to the beam in conventional structures) and the column. To study the cyclic performance of the continuous-tenon joints in column-and-tie timber construction, the reversed lateral cyclic loading tests were carried out on three 3/4 scale specimens with different section heights of the chuanfang. The mechanical behavior was assessed by studying the ultimate bending capacity, deformation ductility and energy dissipation capacity. Test results showed that the slippage of chuanfang occurred when the specimens entered the plastic stage, and the slippage degree increased with the increase of the section height of chuanfang. An obvious plastic deformation of the chuanfang occurred due to the mutual squeezing between the column and chuanfang. A significant pinching was observed on the bending moment-rotation curves, and it was more pronounced as the section height of chuanfang increased. The further numerical investigations showed that the flexural capacity and initial stiffness of the continuous-tenon joints increased with the increase of friction coefficient between the chuanfang and the column, and a more obvious increasing of bending moment occurred after the material yielding. The compressive strength perpendicular to grain of the material played a more significant role in the ultimate bending capacity of continuous-tenon joints than the compressive strength parallel to grain.
Pull-out tests for three different types of strip reinforcements are performed to investigate variation of the apparent coefficient of friction which occurs between the reinforcements and the weathered granite soils with different contents of fine materials. The contents of fine materials for the soil sample are varied from 7% to 36% and the reinforcements used for the pullout tests are smooth, ribbed steel strips and a textured shape Paraweb 1 Friction tie. Test results show that the apparent coefficient of friction tends to decrease with the increase of the content of fine meterials. It is known, however, that the minimum apparent coefficient of friction required to the design of reinforced earth structures can be achieved even at 35% fine contents by using appropriate reinforcements. The ribbed strip reinforcement is found to be the most effective in mobilizing the apparent friction when interacting to finer weathered granite soils. The textured reinforcement is also useful for 35% fine con tents if the textured depth is increased.

Aircraft composite structure with honeycomb core experiences core crush problem in manufacturing. To prevent core crush additional processes are needed such as core stabilization and prepreg material tie-down and this is the cause of increasing cost. Recent study shows that high friction prepreg prevent core crush without additional process. This paper presents the analysis of high frictional material which attracts lots of interests through physical property, mechanical property and microscopic
