In previous paper, the wear properties of clutch facing materials with two different copper amounts against fly-wheel materials used in the clutch system were investigated by sliding wear tests at different applied loads and speeds. This paper have been aimed to evaluate the friction properties for clutch facing materials at the same test conditions as the previous paper. The experimental results indicated that the friction properties of clutch facing materials are influenced from the thermal conductivities of the clutch facing material and the counter material. The clutch facing material with the lower thermal conductivity and the fly-wheel material with the higher thermal conductivity showed the low and stable friction coefficient in the range of high sliding speed. This appears to be due to the formation of a film on the surface of the fly-wheel material.
This study was conducted to investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties of friction stir lap joints. Invar 42 and SS 400 were selected as the experimental materials, and friction stir welding was carried out at a tool rotation speed of 200 rpm and welding speed of 100 mm/min. The application of friction stir welding to Invar 42 effectively reduced the grain size in the stir zone; the average grain size of Invar 42 was reduced from $11.5{\mu}m$ in the base material to $6.4{\mu}m$ in the stir zone, which resulted in an improvement in the mechanical properties of the stir zone. The joint interface between Invar 42 and SS 400 showed a relatively sound weld without voids and cracks, and the intermetallic compounds with $L1_2$ type in lap jointed interface were partially formed with size of 100 nm. Moreover, the hook in the advancing side of Invar 42 was formed from SS 400, which contributed to maintenance of the tensile strength. The evolution of microstructures and mechanical properties of friction stir lap jointed Invar 42 and SS 400 are also discussed herein.

This study is mainly concerned with the friction and wear properties for the specimens of crank shaft which are made of ductile cast iron. The friction and wear tests were carried out for the nor-malized ductile cast iron specimens and their properties were compared with each other at reheat-ing temperatures(550^{\circC,\; 600^{\circ}C,\; 650^{\circ}$) and in dry condition at different friction velocity(0.94 m/s 1.88m/s 2.83m/s) range. After austenized at $910^{\circ}C$ it is observed that the higher the reheating temperature is the hardness becomes decrease which is supposedly attributed to the fact that the amount of pearlite austenite matrix is rduced by reheating after normalizing and that as the reheating temperature goes up the pearlite generated is less and the interval between the pearlites were widened at last to make pearlite globular. At the low velocity the friction coefficient increase in the beginning and gets stabilized as the sliding distance increases. As the friction velocity grows the friction coefficient decreases suppos-edly since the abrasive wear is heavier at low velocity than at the high velocity as the friction tem-perature at low velocity is lower than at high velocity.

Friction stir welding and friction stir processing is a new solid state processing technique for ioining and micro..structural modification in metallic materials. It has been applied not only joining for light metals but also modification of the microstructure to enhance mechanical properties. In thin study, we investigated the mechanical properties for applied friction stir welding and processing under various parameters such as probe diameter, probe type, traveling speed and rotating speed for 5456-H116 AI allov. As a result of experiments, optimum condition of friction stir welding is traveling speed of 15mm/min, rotating speed of 500RPM at 6mm diameter probe. Moreover, in the case of friction stir processing, the optimum condition is traveling speed of 15mm/min, rotating speed of 250RPM at full screw probe. As above mentioned, the mechanical characteristics enhanced with the decreasing of traveling speed and the increasing of friction areas because of plastic flow due to high friction heat. These result can be used as reference data for ship repairment.
The tribological properties of paper-based friction materials are crucial to the performance of a wet clutch system. In this work, the friction and wear characteristics of a paper-based friction material in boundary lubrication state was experimentally investigated using a pin-on-reciprocating tribotester under various normal forces and temperatures. It was found that the wear rate of the friction material increased from $5.8{\times}10^{-6}mm^3/N/cycle$ to $5.5{\times}10^{-5}mm^3/N/cycle$ after 1,700 cycles of testing at $80^{\circ}C$ as normal force increased from 2 N to 7 N. The friction coefficient was also found to increase from 0.135 to 0.155 with increasing normal force from 2 N to 7 N. The increase in contact pressure with increasing normal force may be responsible for these results. In addition, as temperature increased from $20^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$, the wear rate of the friction materials increased from $2.0{\times}10^{-5}mm^3/N/cycle$ to $3.6{\times}10^{-5}mm^3/N/cycle$ while the friction coefficient decreased from 0.163 to 0.146. This result may be associated with the decrease in the hardness of friction materials with increasing temperature. Furthermore, plastic deformation on the friction materials was mainly observed after the test. The outcome of this work may be useful to gain a better understanding of the tribological properties of friction materials, and therefore can contribute to the development of friction materials with enhanced performance for wet clutch systems.

Micro/nano adhesion and friction properties of mixed self-assembled monolayer (SAM) with different chain length for MEMS application were experimentally studied. Many kinds of SAM having different spacer chains(C6, C10 and C18) and their mixtures (1:1) were deposited onto Si-wafer, where the deposited SAM resulted in the hydrophobic nature. The adhesion and friction properties between tip and SAM surfaces under nano scale applied load were measured using an atomic force microscope (AFM) and under micro scale applied load were measured using ball-on-flat type micro-tribotester. Surface roughness and water contact angles were measured with SPM (scanning probe microscope) and contact anglemeter. Results showed that water contact angles of mixed SAMs were similar to those of pure SAMs. The morphology of coating surface was roughened as mixing of SAM. Nano adhesion and nano friction decreased as increasing of the spacer chain length and mixing of SAM. Micro friction was decreased as increasing of the spacer chain length, but micro friction of mixed SAM showed the value between pure SAMs. Nano adhesion and friction mechanism of mixed SAM was proposed in a view of stiffness of spacer chain modified chemically and topographically.
In this study, friction-wear test was carried out on the carburized layer depth of a mechanical structure steel SNCM carburized with RX and LPG for 7hrs at $930^{\circ}C$ and also the wear properties of wear loss, wear rate, coefficient of friction, friction force and friction temperature were investigated. The wear properties for carburized layer of SNCM were tested on dry condition at the room temperature by the thrust load of 49~245N range at sliding speed of 0.2m/sec and the sliding speed of 0.2~1.0m/sec range at thrust load of 98N. Wear loss on the depth of carburizing layer was increased with increasing of thrust load and sliding speed, and with decreasing of hardness. The condition of worn surfaces were showed mild wear at less than the thrust load of 98N and sliding speed of 0.6m/sec but were showed severe wear at more than 98N and 0.6m/sec. The friction load and temperature were increased with increasing of thrust load but with increasing sliding speed was appeared minimum at 0.6m/sec. With increasing thrust load the wear rate was increased and the coefficient of friction was decreased, but with increasing sliding speed the wear rate and the coefficient of friction were decreased in 0.2~0.6m/sec and increased in 0.6~1.0m/sec, therefore 0.6m/sec in this testing is a transition velocity.

Furthermore, it is imperative for the friction materials to have technological excellence and lower production cost to be competitive in the world market. There is no known theoretical procedures to formulate friction materials. It, rather, depends on the trial and error process. Thus, it is quite clear how important it is to accumulate the know-how on the formulation and manufacturing the friction material. This study concerns the practical ways of conceptualizing the formulation and optimizing the manufacturing process. This study focused on the development of formulation for non-asbestos friction material as well as deriving the physical properties of the trial product to prove its validity and applicability. Elaboration of the formula and optimizing scheme of the manufacturing process to get better quality are also sought. Physical properties were obtained by constant velocity test dynamotest, hardness test and strength test.
