A Study on the Friction and Wear Characteristics of TiC, TiN and Ti(CN) with PECVD Process (PECVD 공정에 의한 TiC, TiN 및 Ti(CN)의 마찰 마모 특성 연구)

  • In order to determine the wear Properties of PECVD ceramic coatings, wear process was evaluated using the coated pin of Falex Tribosystem. Coating materials deposited wear the TiC, TiN and Ti(CN). An experimental process was established to determine the tribological characteristics of friction and wear behavior under the variation of applied load, temperature and sliding distance by the Falex test machine. The experimental results indicate that TiN coating compared with TiC coating on e materials have e excellent friction and wear characteristics. However TiC coating compared i친 TiN coatings have a low friction coefficient with steel and good thermal stability, and Ti(CN) has the excellent anti-wear properly as well as the superiority of extreme pressure property. Compound coating compared wi simple coatings show improved tribological characteristics.

A Study on the Characteristics of an Amplitude Proportional Friction Damper (변위비례식 마찰댐퍼의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • An Amplitude Proportional Friction Damper (APFD) system is considered in order to improve the stick-slip characteristics of Coulomb friction damper. The frictional force is proportional to the amplitude in APFD system and the system is non-linear as is Coulomb damper system. The free vibration analysis on an 1-DOF system has conducted to demonstrate the characteristics of the APFD system and the results show that the APFD system has similar damping characteristics to the viscous damper system. It is concluded that the APFD system may become a cost effective substitution for the viscous damper and it also has certain advantages over Coulomb damper system since the APFD system can be designed to work with no stick-slip.

An Experimental Study on the Anti-corrosion and Anti-wear Characteristics of MoS$_2$ Bonded Films for Automotive Wheel Joints (방청 및 내마모 특성이 향상된 자동차 휠 조인트용 $MoS_2$계 고체 피막 윤활제)

  • Friction, wear and corrosion characteristics of various MoS$_2$ bonded film lubricants were investigated to apply them to automotive wheel joints. MoS$_2$ bonded film lubricants were formulated by combinations of several additives and binders, and they were coated onto the pre-treated surfaces of specimens. Friction and wear characteristics were evaluated with Falex pin & vee-block test and LFW-1 block-on-ring test. For the corrosion resistant characteristics of the films, salt solution spray corrosion tests were performed. Results showed that MoS$_2$ bonded films containing both inorganic and organic corrosion-resistant additives yielded a synergy effect on anti-corrosion resistance. Also, binders having the better water-proof and thermal stability showed the lower friction and higher corrosion resistance.

Experimental Determination of Friction Characteristics for Advanced High Strength Steel Sheets (초고강도강판 마찰특성의 실험적 규명)

  • The friction coefficients of advanced high strength steel sheets were experimentally determined. In the friction test, the pulling and holding forces acting on the sheet for various friction conditions, such as lubricant viscosity, pulling speed, blank holding pressure, sheet surface roughness, and hardness of the sheet were measured and the friction coefficient was calculated based on Coulomb's friction law. While the friction coefficient, generally, decreases as the value of friction factor increases, the factor associated with the sheet surface roughness shows U shape behavior for the friction coefficient. Furthermore, the relationship between friction coefficient and the wear volume, which was computed for the roughness of both sheet surfaces and the friction area, is linearly proportional.

Tribological Properties of Hybrid Friction Materials: Combining Low-steel and Non-steel Friction Materials (금속계와 유기계 마찰재의 분포에 따른 하이브리드 마찰재의 마찰 특성)

  • Tribological properties of hybrid type friction materials were studied. Hybrid friction materials were produced by combining non-steel(NS) and low-steel(LS) type friction materials. The emphasis of the investigation was given to possible synergistic effects from the two different friction materials, in terms of friction stability at high temperatures and the amplitude of friction oscillation, also known as stick-slip at low sliding speeds. The high temperature friction test results showed that the friction effectiveness of the hybrid friction material was well sustained compared to LS and NS friction materials. Wear resistance of the hybrid type was similar to LS friction materials. Examination of the rubbing surfaces after tests revealed that the friction characteristics of the hybrid friction material were attributed to the wear debris produced from low-steel friction materials, which were migrated to the surface of the non-steel friction material, forming new contact plateaus. The stick-slip amplitude and its frequency were pronounced when non-steel friction material was tested, while hybrid and low-steel types showed relatively small stick-slip amplitudes. These results suggest possible improvement of tribological properties by designing a hybrid composite of low-steel and non-steel friction materials.

  • It is an object of this research to develop a fine friction tester capable of analyzing a friction characteristics of a small size specimens in a load range of 0.03 ∼ 2.0 N. According to the test results using the developed precision friction tester, it is expected to get the experimental data with fine resolution and high reliability.

  • Friction and wear test for non-asbestos material against cast iron drum were carried out to investigate the friction and wear characteristics of brake system. Its friction coefficient and wear volume were measured and compared with those of asbestos friction material. The experiment. was perforated tinder room temperature and various sliding conditions. After each experiment, the sin-faces of friction materials were observed by SEM.

  • Tube hydroforming is a relatively new technology in comparison with conventional stamping process. Thus, there is no large knowledge base to assist the product and process designers, especially from the friction point of view. This paper covers the topic of friction and lubrication with regard to tube hydroforming. It presents the fact that frictional characteristic can have an effect on the formability of specific components. The presented concept describes the equipment which is required to determine the friction coefficient. Some example results of the friction and bulge test are shown.

  • Tribological behavior of novolac resin-based friction materials with three different relative amounts of graphite and zirconium silicate was investigated by using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. The goal of this paper is to examine the effects of the relative amount of a lubricant and an abrasive in the automotive friction material on friction and wear characteristics at elevated temperature. Friction and wear of friction materials were affected by the existence of transfer film(3$\^$rd/ body layer) at friction interface and the composition of friction material, especially lubricant amount. The friction material with higher content of graphite indicated homogenized and durable transfer film, and resulted in stable friction coefficient regardless of the increase in friction heat. The experimental result also showed that the higher concentration of ZrSiO$_4$ in friction material aggravated friction stability and wear resistance due to the higher friction heat generated at fiction interface during high temperature friction test.

Friction Model of Sheet Metal Forming Considering Lubricant and Surface Roughness (윤활과 표면조도를 고려한 박판 성형 마찰 모델)

  • In order to find the effect of material property and lubricant viscosity on the frictional characteristics a sheet metal friction tester was designed and tensile test, surface roughness test, and friction test were performed with several kinds of drawing oils. Test results show that as the lubricant viscosity becomes lower, the friction coefficient is higher. When surface roughness is extremely low or high, friction coefficient is also high. Using these test results, the friction model considering lubricant viscosity and surface roughness is developed. The validity and accuracy of the friction model are shown by comparing the punch loads among FEM analysis results employing current friction model and conventional friction model respectively and experimental measurement.
