  • To increase the efficiency of the hydraulic axial piston pumps, it is need to know the various characteristics in the sliding contact parts of them. Especially, friction characteristics between the cylinder block and the valve plate in the hydraulic axial piston pumps plays an important role to high power density. In this paper, we tried to clarify friction characteristics between the cylinder block and the spherical valve plate in bent-axis-type axial piston pump in experimentally. Results are arranged as follow; (1) friction torque between the cylinder block and the spherical valve plate has a proportional relation to weight or rotational speed, and is strongly affected by temperature. (2) Friction torque strongly depends on force balance ratio in valve plate. (3) In this experiment, lubrication condition between the cylinder block and the spherical valve plate is under hydrodynamic lubrication.

  • A Knowledge of friction force in pneumatic cylinders makes it possible to improve cylinder description during simulation and to asses performance under changing operating conditions more accurately. Such knowledge is particularly useful, for example, when modeling continuous pneumatic positioning systems or predicting the operating conditions under which stick slip may occur, as well as in establishing preventive maintenance procedures for pneumatic cylinders. Friction force depends on a number of factors, including operating pressure, seal running speed on the cylinder barrel and rod, barrel material and surface roughness, seal dimensions and profile, seal material, lubrication conditions, cylinder distortion during assembly, and the operating temperature of cylinder components. This paper shows a system for measuring the friction force caused by a seal used in pneumatic cylinders. Results of experimental tests show that seal friction forces for grease lubricated service are clearly dependent on speed and pressure and are les sensitivity to other parameter. i.e., barrel material and roughness, seal material, and profile.

  • It is vary importance that stopping distance for the freight train and need to design parameter of the brake force and friction coefficient. Acoording to the brake force between shoe and wheel less than the adhesion between wheel and rail. Because of vary difference between empty and weight car of 0∼500kN, this solution was made to application for variable loaded brake system. When the V=110km/h. the emergency stopping distance of freight train is about 700m, so this study was considered on the two condition, one of the increse brake force and to be different of the increse friction coefficient on the brake shoe. It was useful increse friction coefficient. Result of study, analyze effect of the brake shoe on the brake force of the freight car and high friction coefficient were proposed. To do this, ${\mu}$=0.155${\pm}$10% when S=600m on the V=110km/h of the train, 2 groove of friction surface on the temperature distribution were considered.

  • It is very important to evaluate the friction force of valve train system in the aspect of reducing friction loss of engine. To this end, we have developed measuring system of friction force of engine valve train system. There were two major factors in the process of development of it. One was it had to accurately measure the friction force up to 3500 Crpm without any problems such as mechanical vibration, electrical noise and so on. The other was it also had to simulate real engine conditions such as Crpm, oil temperature, oil pressure and oil aeration including effect of belt drive system. In this paper we have introduced the process of development of it based on test results, and also analysis process of measured data.

  • Commercially pure 1050 aluminum alloy with ultra-fine grain sizes was produced by a friction stir process. The maximum temperature in the friction stir processed zone decreased almost linearly with the tool rotation speed. In the friction stir processed zone, dislocation density was very low and fine equiaxed grains were observed. The grain size decreased with tool rotation speed. It is noteworthy that, for 560 rpm, a grain size decreased to even the submicron level with only the single pass of friction stir process. These fine grains resulted in improvement in hardness of the friction stir processed zone.

  • The use of carbon materials in mechanical components such as bearings, seals, and bushings that do not require lubricants is increasing rapidly. This paper reports on establishing the optimal condition for resin-bonded carbon materials. We fixed the content ratio of materials, which include graphite powder and diatomite as a lubricant modifier and a friction modifier, respectably, with resin used as a bonding material. We then produced bushings using hot-pressing within the temperature range of resin curing. The properties of bushing, the friction coefficient, wear rate and the mechanical strengths are discussed in relation to the content of respective materials, with correlation of friction coefficient and sliding distance. Finally, we examined the friction coefficient changes according to the applied load on bushing and the friction coefficient changes according to contact speed of bushing.

  • In tread braking of freight cars, braking force is produced by the friction between the wheel and the braking shoe. Friction coefficients such as the brake power, weight variation and brake shoe types should be sensitively treated as the design parameters. The conditions of the car, empty and weighted, should also be taken into consideration in brake force design and the control of brake force has some limitations in terms of the brake system design so that the brake materials selection should be considered as important measures to solve that difficulties. Friction characteristics of brake materials should remain within the range of maximum and minimum value and the friction performance should remain stable regardless of braking time and temperature. This study presented an experimental evaluation method to secure optimum braking performance by keeping safe braking effect and braking distance by the friction coefficient of the brake shoe of the freight cars.

  • This paper deals with an experimental study on the friction torque characteristics of magnetic fluid seals for various oil temperatures, rotating speeds, and vacuum pressures. The friction torque of MFS was measured by high response torque meter. The experimental results show that, as the rotating speed increases, the friction torque of MFS increases and as the oil temperature increases, the friction torque of MFS decreases. Also, the experimental results show that the friction torque of Model-II is 1.73~2.56, 2.0~2.89, 2.0~3.25 times higher than those of Model-I under the atmospheric pressure, vacuum pressure ($10^{-4} and 10^{-6}$ torr), respectively.

  • It is well-known that nowadays heat resisting and anti-corrosive materials have been widely used as the components materials of gas turbines, nuclear power plants and engines etc. In the fields of machine production industry. And materials for engine components, like as the exhaust valve of internal combustion engine, have been required to operate under the high temperature range of $700^{\circ}C$-$800^{\circ}C$ and high pressured gas with repeated mechanical load for the high performance of engines. For these components, friction welding for bonding of dissimilar steels can be applied for in order to obtain process shortening, production cost reduction and excellent bonding quality. And age hardening recently has been noticed to the heat resisting materials for further strengthening of high temperature strength, especially high temperature fatigue strength. However, it is difficult to find out any report concerning the effects of age hardening for strengthening high temperature fatigue strength to the Friction welded heat resisting and anti-corrosive materials. In this study the experiment was carried out as the high temperature rotary bending fatigue testing under the condition of $700^{\circ}C$ high temperature to the friction welded domestic heat resisting steels, SUH3-SUS303, which were 10hr., 100hr. aging heat treated at $700^{\circ}C$ after solution treatment 1hr. at $1, 060^{\circ}C$ for the purpose of observing the effects of the high temperature fatigue strength and fatigue fracture behaviors as well as with various mechanical properties of welded joints. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1) Through mechanical tests and micro-structural examinations, the determined optimum welding conditions, rotating speed 2420 rpm, heating pressure 8kg/mm super(2), upsetting pressure 22kg/mm super(2), the amount of total upset 7mm (heating time 3 sec and upsetting time 2 sec) were satisfied. 2) The solution treated material SUH 3, SUS 303, have the highest inclination gradient on S-N curve due to the high temperature fatigue testing for long time at $700^{\circ}C$. 3) The optimum aging time of friction welded SUH3-SUS 303, has been recognized near the 10hr. at $700^{\circ}C$ after the solution treatment of 1hr. at $1, 060^{\circ}C$. 4) The high temperature fatigue limits of aging treated materials were compared with those of raw material according to the extender of aging time, on 10hr. aging, fatigue limits were increased by SUH 3 75.4%, SUS 303 28.5%, friction welded joints SUH 3-SUS 303 44.2% and 100hr. aging the rates were 64.9%, 30.4% and 36.6% respectively. 5) The fatigue fractures occurred at the side of the base matal SUS303 of the friction welded joints SUH 3-SUS 303 and it is difficult to find out fractures at the friction welding interfaces. 6) The cracking mode of SUS 303, SUH 3-303 is intergranular in any case, but SUH 3 is fractured by transgranular cracking.
