  • A position tracking control schemes on the precise mechanical system in presence of nonlinear dynamic friction is proposed. A nonlinear dynamic friction is regarded as the bristle friction model to compensate effects of friction. The conventional sliding mode controller often has been used as a non-model-based friction controller, but it has a poor tracking performance in high-precision position tracking application since it completely cannot compensate the friction effect below a certain precision level. Thus to improve the precise position tracking performance, we propose the sliding mode control method combined with the friction-model-based observer having tunable structure of the transient response. Then this control scheme has a good transient response as well as the high precise tracking performance compared with the conventional sliding mode control without observer and the control system with similar type of observer. The experiments on the bali-screw drive table with the nonlinear dynamic friction show the feasibility of the proposed control scheme.

  • In this study, friction stick-slip vibration're interpretation of the phenomenon, we used a statistical model of friction. In a previous study using a definite friction factor, but to a dynamic simulation using a constantly changing during the integration time by a Monte Carlo simulation method, not the average coefficient of friction and the dynamic friction coefficient and a constant value in this study.

  • Based on the experimental observation, the mathematical friction model, which is an essential information for analyzing the forming process of sheet metal, is developed considering lubricant viscosity, surface roughness and hardness, punch corner radius, and punch speed. By comparing the punch load found by FEM with a proposed friction model with experimental measurement when the coated and uncoated steel sheets are formed in 2-D geometry in dry and lubricant conditions, the validity and accuracy of the developed friction model are demonstrated.

  • Friction is an important factor for precise position tracking control of servo systems. Servo systems with highly nonlinear friction are sensitive to the variation of operating condition. To overcome this problem, we use the LuGre friction model which can consider dynamic characteristics of friction. The LuGre friction model is used as a feed-forward compensator to improve tracking performance of servo systems. The parameters of the LuGre friction model are identified through experiments. The experimental result shows that the tracking performance of servo systems with higherly nonlinear friction can be improved by using feed-forward friction compensation.

  • Friction phenomenon can be described as two parts which are pre-sliding and sliding regions. In motion of the sliding region, friction forces depend on the velocity of the system and are known as Coulomb, stick-slip, stribeck effect and viscous friction. The pre-sliding region, which is before breakaway, depends on the position of the system. The motion of friction in the sliding region can be described as the LuGre model. But the pre-sliding motion of friction, which has hysteresis characteristics in general, is not known widely. Therefore, an improved friction model, which can describe the motion of friction in the pre-sliding region, is proposed in this paper. And simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed friction model for precise tracking control systems.

  • A fluid transient analysis on the Koreasat 1 & 2 pipeline system is conducted through numerical parametric studies in which unsteady friction results are compared with quasi-steady friction results and show relatively accurate prediction of the response curve with the unsteady friction. The code developed and used in this analysis has finished verification through comparing with the original Zielke model, the full and recursive convolution model and quasi-steady model as a reference. The unsteady friction is calculated by the recursive convolution Zielke model in which a complete evolution history of velocity field is no longer required so that it makes the fluid transient analysis on the complicated system possible. The results show that the application of quasi-steady friction to model cannot predict the entire response curve properly except the first peak amplitude but the application of unsteady friction to model can predict reasonably the response curve, therefore it is to know the characteristics of the propulsion system.

  • Nuclear fuels are always exposed to hot temperature and high speed coolant flow during the reactor operation. Thus the fuel rod accompanies small amplitude vibration due to the turbulent flow. The random vibration causes friction between the fuel rod and the grid structure which provides the lateral supports. The friction is critical to the fuel rod fretting wear, and it degrades fuel performance when a severe wear is developed. LuGre friction model is introduced in the paper, and the performance was evaluated comparing to the classical Coulomb model. It is shown that the developed friction force considering the Coulomb friction is not enough to stop or delay the motion while the stick-slip can be simulated using LuGre friction model. Numerical solutions of the two dimensional spacer grid cell model with the modern friction are also reviewed, and it is discussed that the new friction model simulates well the nonlinear mechanism.

  • In this study, structural analyses were conducted to analyze the performance of a bridge to which friction pendulum systems (FPSs) were applied using different friction models. A Coulomb friction model and a rate dependent friction model were constructed using the friction coefficient of a PVDF/MgO friction material to analyze the effect of different friction analysis models. The Coulomb friction model uses a single friction coefficient regardless of friction velocity, while the rate dependent friction model can reflect the change in the friction coefficient with friction velocity. Nonlinear time history and seismic fragility analyses were conducted to confirm responses of the bridge. The seismic responses of a deck and a column were used to evaluate the performance of the base isolated bridge, and a friction model that can effectively evaluate the performance of isolated bridges was analyzed.

  • This study develops a haptic display model which is an indispensable for the force generation in the virtual environment. In developing the haptic display model, a Proxy concept and a Karnopp friction model are utilized to generate the reaction force and the friction force. Also this study develops a 2 D.O.F. remote wiping system. This system is composed of a 2 D.O.F. master manipulator, a force sensor equipped 2 D.O.F. slave manipulator and a real time controller. With the developed remote wiping system, this study identifies the friction characteristic of the aluminum, acryl and rubber plate. The results are used as the dynamic friction coefficient of the haptic display model. This study shows the efficiency of the developed haptic display model by the comparison between the friction characteristic of the haptic display with the developed haptic display model and the friction characteristic of the real aluminum, acryl and rubber plate.
