A two-degree of freedom model is suggested to understand the basic dynamical behaviors of the interaction between two masses of the friction induced vibration system. The two masses may be considered as the pad and the disk of the brake, The phase space analysis is performed to understand complicated dynamics of the non-linear model. Attractors in the phase space are examined for various conditions of the parameters of the model especially by emphasizing on the damping parameters. In certain conditions, the attractor becomes a limit cycle showing the stick-slip phenomena. In this paper, not only the existence of the limit cycle but also the size of the limit cycle is examined to demonstrate the non-linear dynamics that leads the unstable state. For the two different cases of the system frequency ((1)two masses with same natural frequencies, (2) with different natural frequencies), the propensity of limit cycle is discussed in detail. The results show an important fact that it may make the system worse when too much damping is present in the only one part of the masses.
Structures with additional frictional damping system have strong nonlinearity that the dynamic behavior is highly affected by the relative magnitude between frictional force and excitation load. In this study, normalized response spectra of the structures with non-dimensional friction force are obtained through nonlinear time history analyses of the mass-normalized single degree of freedom systems using 20 ground motion data recorded on rock site. The variation of the control performance of frictional damping system is investigated in terms of the dynamic load and the structural natural period, of which effects were not considered in the previous studies. Least square curve fitting equations are presented for describing those normalized response spectrum and optimal non-dimensional friction forces are obtained for controlling the peak displacement and absolute acceleration of the structure based on the derivative of the curve-fitted design spectrum.

A four-degree of freedom model is suggested to understand the basic dynamical behaviors of the normal interaction between two masses of the friction induced normal vibration system. The two masses may be considered as the pad and the disk of the brake. The phase space analysis is performed to understand complicated in-plane dynamics of the non-linear model. Attractors in the phase space are examined for various conditions of the parameters. In certain conditions, the attractor becomes a limit cycle showing the stick-slip phenomena. In this paper, on the basis of the in-plane motion not only the existence of the limit cycle but also the size of the limit cycle is examined o demonstrate the non-linear dynamics that leads the unstable state and then the normal vibration is investigated as the state of the in-plane motion For only one case of the system frequency(two masses with same natural frequencies), the propensity of the normal vibration is discussed in detail. The results show an important fact that it may be not effective when too much damping is present in the only one part of the masses.
In this work, the mechanism of damping and its theoretical evaluation for layered aluminium cantilever structures jointed with a number of equispaced connecting bolts under an equal tightening torque have been considered. Extensive experiments have been conducted on a number of specimens for comparison with numerical results. Intensity of interface pressure, its distribution pattern, dynamic slip ratio and kinematic coefficient of friction at the interfaces, relative spacing of the connecting bolts, frequency and amplitude of excitation are found to play a major role on the damping capacity of such structures. It is established that the damping capacity of structures jointed with connecting bolts can be improved largely with an increase in number of layers maintaining uniform intensity of pressure distribution at the interfaces. Thus the above principle can be utilized in practice for construction of aircraft and aerospace structures effectively in order to improve their damping capacity which is one of the prime considerations for their design.
This study intends to provide the analytical and experimental damping characterization of carbon nanotube/epoxy composites. A constitutive model based on continuum mechanics is employed to describe epoxy and the perfectly bonded and partially bonded nanotubes. An interfacial stick-slip between the nanotubes and epoxy is considered to characterize the damping of the composites. For experimental estimation, beam-type specimens are prepared with a variation of nanotube concentration from 0.5% to 2% in weight. An ultrasonic agitation method is employed for enhancing the nanotube dispersion within epoxy. Damping of the composites is characterized in terms of the strain and the nanotube concentration. Results show that the nanotube concentration significantly affects the damping characteristics of the nanocomposites. A good correlation is found between the analytical prediction based on the stick-slip and the experimental measurements.
Hwang et al (2001) proposed a new method for an evaluation of equivalent damping ratios of a linear structure with linear or nonlinear damping devices. This procedure has a disadvantage that it requires time history analysis for the whole system including damping devices, which may be troublesome for practical application. To tackle this problem closed form formulas for equivalent damping ratios are proposed in this study. It is assumed that the responses of MDOF system can be reproduced by an equivalent SDOF system which vibrates in a fundamental mode. The numerical analyses of a ten-story building equipped with linear viscous damper or active mass damper or friction damper show the effectiveness of equivalent SDOF model and closed form formulas.
A precision tribometer consisting of a cantilever was designed to measure frictional forces in the micro-Newton range. As frictional forces are measured based on the bending of the cantilever, vibration of the cantilever is the most significant factor affecting the quality of the friction measurement. Therefore, improved design of the tribometer with double cantilevers and a connecting plate that united the two cantilevers mechanically was suggested. For the verification of the modified design of the tribometer, numerical analysis and experiments were conducted. Examination using the finite element method revealed that the tribometer with a double cantilever and a connecting plate exhibited faster damping characteristics than the tribometer with a single cantilever. In the experiment, effectiveness of the double cantilever and connecting plate for vibration reduction was also confirmed. Vibration of the tribometer with double cantilever decreased eight times faster than that of the tribometer with a single cantilever. The faster damping of the double cantilever design is attributed to the mechanical interaction at the contacting surfaces between the cantilever and the connecting plate. Tribotesting using the tribometer with a single cantilever resulted in random fluctuation of frictional forces due to the stick-slip behavior. However, using the tribometer with a double cantilever and connecting plate for the tribotest gave relatively uniform and steady measurement of frictional forces. Increased stiffness owing to using a double cantilever and mechanical damping of the connecting plate were responsible for the stable friction signal.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of grain size on the damping capacity of the Fe-26Mn-4Co-2Al damping alloy. ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ were formed by cold working, and these martensites were formed with a specific direction and surface relief. With an increase in grain size, the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ increased by decrement the austenite phase stability. This volume fraction more rapidly increased in cold-rolled specimen than in the specimen that was not cold-rolled. The damping capacity also increased more with the augmentation an increased grain size and more rapidly increased in cold-rolled specimen than in the specimen that was not cold rolled. The effect of grain size on the damping capacity was larger in the cold-rolled specimen than the specimen that was not cold-rolled. Damping capacity linearly increased with an increase in volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}-martensite$. Thus, the damping capacity was affected by the ${\varepsilon}-martensite$.
