This study proposes a new concept of an axial damper using the combination of shape memory alloy (SMA), friction devices, and polyurethane springs. Although there are many kinds of dampers to limit the damages, large residual deformation may happen and it causes much repairing cost for restoring the structure to the initial position. Also in some of the dampers, a special technology for assembling and fabricating is needed. One of the most important advantages of this damper is the ability to remove all the residual deformation using SMA plates and simple assembling without any special technology to fabricate. In this paper, four different dampers (in presence or omission of friction devices and polyurethane springs) are investigated. All four cases are analyzed in ABAQUS platform under cyclic loadings. In addition, the SMA plates are replaced by steel ones in four cases, and the results are compared to the SMA dampers. The results show that the axial polyurethane friction (APF) damper could decrease the residual deformation effectively. Also, the damper capacity and dissipated energy could be improved. The analysis showed that APF damper is a good recentering damper with a large amount of energy dissipation and capacity, among others.

This study develops a new hybrid passive energy dissipation device for seismic rehabilitation of an existing structure. The device is composed of a friction damper combined with a steel plate with vertical slits as a hysteretic damper. Analytical model is developed for the device, and the capacity of the hybrid device to satisfy a given target performance is determined based on the ASCE/SEI 7-10 process. The effect of the device is verified by nonlinear dynamic analyses using seven earthquake records. The analysis results show that the dissipated inelastic energy is concentrated on the hybrid damper and the maximum interstory drift of the SMRF with damping system satisfies the requirement of the current code.

The purpose of this paper is to present a design procedure of coulomb friction dampers for controlling elastic and inelastic responses of building structures. The equivalent damping and frequency increased by the friction damper are estimated using ATC-40 and ATC-55 procedures which provide equivalent linear system for bilinear one, and then a design formula to achieve target performance response level by friction damper is presented. It is identified that there exists error between the responses obtained by this formula and by performing nonlinear analysis and the features of the error vary according to the hardening ratio, yield strength ratio, and structural period. Equations for compensating this er개r are reposed based on the least square method, and the results from numerical analyses indicate that the error is significantly reduced, and the proposed formula can be used without much error for designing coulomb friction damper for retrofitting a structure showing elastic or inelastic behavior.

Four models for stick-slip friction are presented and are adopted for a numerical simulation study for a manual transmission clutch damper in idle mode. Meaning of parameters for friction models are explained and proper values are suggested. Also explained ate the reason why those specific values for the parameters are chosen. Preferable model for the clutch damper In Idle mode is discussed in terms of calculation efficiency and fidelity of the model based on real measured data. For clutch damper idle mode simulation studies, all four models perform equally well.
In this study, the feasibility and applicability of a friction damper with a vertical installation scheme are investigated. This device is composed of a steel section and two friction hinges at both ends which dissipate seismic energy. Due to its small width and vertical installation scheme, the proposed damper can minimize the interference with architectural functions. To evaluate the performance of the proposed damper, its mechanical behavior is theoretically evaluated and the required formulas for the yield strength and elastic stiffness are derived. The theoretical formulas are verified by establishing the analytical model of the damper in the SAP2000 software and comparing their results. To further investigate the performance of the developed damper, the provided analytical model is applied to a 4-story reinforced concrete (RC) structure and its performance is evaluated before and after retrofit under the Maximum Considered Earthquake (MCE) hazard level. The seismic performance is thoroughly evaluated in terms of maximum interstory drift ratio, displacement time history, residual displacement, and energy dissipation. The results show that the proposed damper can be efficiently used to protect the structure against seismic loads.

Wind induced vibration of a stay cable with a nonlinear friction damper is investigated. Stay cables are likely to vibrate under several wind-related environments, and cable dampers can be used to suppress the excessive vibrations of stay cables. Conventional design of cable dampers are based on the equivalent modal damping achieved by the cable damper. However, the equivalent modal damping achieved by nonlinear dampers are depend on the vibration characteristics like the amplitude of the vibration. In this paper, not only the achieved equivalent modal damping, but also the vibration levels under gust wind are analyzed through the time domain buffeting analysis. Numerical simulation results show the efficacy of a nonlinear friction damper for suppressing the excessive vibration of a stay cable.

In this paper, to protect the piping in nuclear power plants and various plant facilities, we have developed a damper using the friction method and carried out a study to analyze the performance. Friction typed damper means a device for attenuating vibration by generating a frictional force to the bearing and the shaft by applying a compressive force to the MER-Spring. In order to analyze the performance of the damper, the properties of MER-Spring and friction materials were analyzed, a study on the effects of friction was carried out, and the behavior of this equation was established. And, to determine whether deformation of the material and to examine the reliability of the behavior equation established, prototypes was produced and, through a performance test and finite element analysis of a damper made of specimens, they were analyzed. As a result, it is noted that the reliability of the material was confirmed, the coefficient of friction have to be adjusted according to the velocity, cyclic loading test and finite element analysis results show exhibits excellent results. In addition, a review of the dynamic loads in the future shall be performed for the usage in more broad fields.

Various hybrid dampers have been developed in Korea to control the vibration due to a wind and earthquake. In order to minimize the installment space, cost and construction process, the new hybrid friction damper is developed. This hybrid damper is composed of several rotary friction components having two frictional joint. Because of these components, the building vibration due to wind and earthquake can be mitigated by hybrid friction damper. In this paper, various dependency tests were carried out to evaluate on the structural performance of two joint rotational friction component of the hybrid damper. Test results show that two joint rotational components do not depend on a displacement and a frequency of forcing but friction coefficients is reducing as a clamping force is increasing.
This study investigated the seismic performance of a hybrid damper composed of a steel slit plate and friction pads, and an optimum retrofit scheme was developed based on life cycle cost. A sample hybrid damper was tested under cyclic loading to confirm its validity as a damping device and to construct its nonlinear analysis model. The effectiveness of the optimum damper distribution schemes was investigated by comparing the seismic fragility and the life cycle costs of the model structure before and after the retrofit. The test results showed that the damper behaved stably throughout the loading history. Numerical analysis results showed that the slit-friction hybrid dampers optimally distributed based on life cycle cost proved to be effective in minimizing the failure probability and the repair cost after earthquakes.

This study mainly treats a new type of the bracing friction damper system, which is able to minimize structural damage under earthquake loads. The slotted bolt holes are placed on the shear faying surfaces with an intention to dissipate considerable amount of friction energy. The superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) wire strands are installed crossly between two plates for the purpose of enhancing recentering force that are able to reduce permanent deformation occurring at the friction damper system. The smart recentering friction damper system proposed in this study can be expected to reduce repair cost as compared to the conventional damper system because the proposed system mitigates the inter-story drift of the entire frame structure. The response mechanism of the proposed damper system is firstly investigated in this study, and then numerical analyses are performed on the component spring models calibrated to the experimental results. Based on the numerical analysis results, the seismic performance of the recentering friction damper system with respect to recentering capability and energy dissipation are investigated before suggesting optimal design methodology. Finally, nonlinear dynamic analyses are conducted by using the frame models designed with the proposed damper systems so as to verify superior performance to the existing damper systems.
