Developed friction snubbers changes the shock or vibration into a heat energy by mechanical friction. Snubber is divided into friction snubbers and hydraulic snubbers according to the operation types. However, hydraulic snubber has a lot of problems caused by temperature, humidity, radioactivity, and viscosity of hydraulic fluid. In these respects, to solve these problems, not only do friction snubber supplement lacks of hydraulic snubber but has also simpler structure than hydraulic snubber. In this paper, friction snubber used sponge iron by friction material is experimentally compared with general friction snubber In this results, the experiment verifies friction function and produce the manufacture condition for the effective friction snubber development.

The essential element of brake device for railway vehicle is in demand for higher performance along side the trend of railway vehicle size and speed. Essential element of brake device for high speed train is composed of metallic friction material and brake disc. Thus, brake distance, duration and brake stability shall be determined due to friction materials and friction characteristics. Also friction characteristics are influenced by metallic friction material's properties of matter, manufacturing process and component parts. Various materials and configurations of metallic friction materials are currently being implemented to railway vehicles, For this reason study of friction characteristics in accordance with materials is necessary, but study of these important elements are not actively being accomplished. Therefore, in this study, wished to study the graphite's friction characteristic comprised in friction material in accordance with particle size and amount of volume through lab-scale test.

In order to measure the friction coefficient used in sheet metal forming analysis, a friction tester was manufactured and friction tests were performed in various forming conditions. Based on the friction coefficients measured, a mathematical friction model was constructed in terms of lubricant viscosity, blank holding force, punch velocity and sheet roughness. In addition, the effect of the number of forming parameters in the calculation of friction coefficient on the accuracy of sheet metal forming analysis was investigated by comparing the punch loads obtained from the FEM simulation, in which the friction coefficients were determined by a few parameters with the experimental measurement.
The frictional properties of automotive brake pads with four different ceramic materials such as magnesia, hematite, alumina, and zircon were investigated. A Krauss type friction tester using gray iron disks was used to examine the friction coefficient, intensity of friction force oscillation, and the tribe-surfaces. Results showed that the friction coefficient increased as the hardness of abrasives increases. Friction oscillation was also increased with hardness of the abrasives. However, the friction materials containing less abrasive particles produced stable friction films on the sliding surface. The transition between two-body and three body abrasion during sliding also played a crucial role in destructing the friction film on the pad surface and in determining various frictional properties.

This paper presents a friction model to realize self-excited vibration of multi-body systems. The friction coefficient is modeled with a spline function in most commercial codes. Even if such a function resolves the problem of discontinuity in friction force, it cannot realize self-excited vibration phenomena. Furthermore, as the relative velocity approaches zero, the friction coefficient approaches zero with the conventional model. So, slip occurs when small force is applied to the system. To avoid these problems a new friction model is proposed in this study. With the new friction model, the self-excited vibration can be realized since the friction coefficient changes with the relative velocity. Furthermore, the slip phenomena could be reduced significantly with the proposed model.

The principle of self clamping friction clutch is presented in this paper and the transmitted torque capacity is also calculated. In order to enlarge the friction force, a part of rotating force of driving side is converted to normal force of friction materials by clamping arm. The increased normal force of friction materials assures the large friction force and the transmitted torque capacity of clutch becomes large. The self clamping friction clutch is adopted in the tube type air pressure clutch and the condition of stability is investigated. It is proven that the inclined angle of clamping arm and the friction factor of friction materials are the essential elements in stability and torque capacity of self clamping friction clutch. The transmitted torque capacity of self clamping friction clutch is compared with air pressure clutch. The normal force of friction lining is magnified by 1/(1-k) and the transmitted torque capacity is also magnified with same proportion comparing with air pressure clutch. The larger the friction factor of friction lining, the larger the magnification factor. The longer the clamping arm, the smaller the magnification factor. It must be also noted that the value of k=${\mu}Y/X$ is the criterion of stability. If the value of k=${\mu}Y/X$ is greater than or equal to 1, the self clamping friction clutch is unstable and it can not be used as clutch.
Friction and wear properties of brake friction materials containing different metal fibers (Al, Cu or Steel fibers) were investigated. Based on a simple experimental formulation, friction materials with the same amount of metal fibers were tested using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Two different materials (gray cast iron and aluminum metal matrix composite (MMC)) were used for disks rubbing against the friction materials. Results front ambient temperature tests revealed that the friction material containing Cu fibers sliding against gray cast iron disk showed a distinct negative $\mu$-v (friction coefficient vs. sliding velocity) relation implying possible stick-slip generation at low speeds. The negative $\mu$- v relation was not observed when the Cu-containing friction materials were rubbed against the Al-MMC counter surface. Elevated temperature tests showed that the friction level and the intensity of friction force oscillation were strongly affected by the thermal conductivity and melting temperature of metallic ingredients of the friction couple. Friction materials slid against cast iron disks exhibited higher friction coefficients than Al-MMC (metal matrix composite) disks during high temperature tests. On the other hand, high temperature test results suggested that copper fibers in the friction material improved fade resistance and that steel fibers were not compatible with Al-MMC disks showing severe material transfer and erratic friction behavior during sliding at elevated temperatures.
The characteristics of friction in direct acting OHC vane train system have been investigated by the comparison of experimental and theoretical results. A modified friction model was presented to calculate the friction force at cam/tappet contact. A simple experimental system was evaluated to measure the friction force and the camshaft driving torque. The friction force was measured by using the dynamic loadcell. Good agreement was found between theoretical and experimental results in friction force, but there was a little difference in driving torque.

When mobile robots perform the mission in the rough terrain, the traversability depended on the terrain characteristic is useful information. In the traversabilities, wheel-terrain maximum friction coefficient can indicate the index to control wheel-terrain traction force or whether mobile robots to go or not. This paper proposes estimating wheel-terrain maximum friction coefficient. The existing method to estimate the maximum friction coefficient is limited in flat terrain or relatively easy driving knowing wheel absolute velocity. But this algorithm is applicable in rough terrain where a lot of slip occurred not knowing wheel absolute velocity. This algorithm applies the tire-friction model to each wheel to express the behavior of wheel friction and classifies slip-friction characteristic into 3 major cases. In each case, the specific algorithm to estimate the maximum friction coefficient is applied. To test the proposed algorithm's feasibility, test bed(ROBHAZ-6WHEEL) simulations are performed. And then the experiment to estimate the maximum friction coefficient of the test bed is performed. To compare the estimated value with the real, we measure the real maximum friction coefficient. As a result of the experiment, the proposed algorithm has high accuracy in estimating the maximum friction coefficient.

In this study, characteristics of TiAl alloy and SCM440 (Cr-Mo steel) have been investigated with the various joining condition by servo motor type friction welder. The experimental factors of friction welder used in this study are spindle revolution, friction speed, and distance, upset speed and distance, respectively. Servo motor type friction welder could be controlled by the level of oil pressure, and it could be performed by position control dependence of electrical energy. Mechanical properties and morphology of welded interface were characterized by various joining condition. This aroused due to the bond strength dependence on friction heat and size of the heat affected zone. Therefore, it is necessary to have enough friction heat and decreased heat affected zone for good friction welding between dissimilar metals. An optimum bond was obtained between TiAl alloy and SCM440 by controlling friction speed and distance. At the spindle revolution 4,000 rpm, friction speed 120 mm/min, friction distance 15 mm, the bond strength was found to be 312 MPa.
