  • The adsorption characteristics of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions has been studied by using chitin as an adsorbent. The pure chitin was obtained from the extraction of red-crab shell dumped by fish factory. Adsorption kinetics of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions on the chitin reached at the maximum adsorption within two minutes. Adsorbed amounts of heavy metals were pH 7.0>10.5>3.5 in the following order. Adsorption ratio by chitin was 21${\sim}$99% for Cd(II) ion and 24${\sim}$95% for Pb(II) ion. Recovery ratio of Cd(II) ion on the chitin was 22${\sim}$53%, and that of Pb(II) ion was 22${\sim}$73%. The adsorption behavior of these heavy metals was explained well by Freundlich adsorption isotherm.

  • In this study, we have investigated the preparation of mixed bead and fiber type hybrid ion-exchanger for recovering nickel ion from plating rinse water. There was little dependence of adsorption capacity for nickel ion on the mixing ratio of resin type and fiber type of ion exchangers. However, it increased with increasing the resin content in the mixed bed. It was shown that the data Langmuir and Freundlich's adsorption isotherm model were well fitted to the linear. Affinity between the functional groups in the ion exchanger and nickel ion in the process was confirmed. The pressure drop decreased with increasing the number of stage in the multistage bed, but it increased with increasing the resin content in the mixing bed. The initial breakthrough time in the multistage bed was short due to the increase of number of stage in the continuous process. It was found that the final breakthrough time of the multistage bed was little changed. The breakthrough time decreased with increasing the amount of fibrous ion exchanger in the mixed bed. The maximum adsorption capacities of the mixed and multistage beds were 2.51 meq/g and 2.69 meq/g, respectively. The desorption time for the nickel ion with $1N H_2SO_4$ solution was lower than 10 minutes and the yield of desorption was greater than 98 percent.

  • Adsorption characteristics of erythrosine dye onto the activated carbon has been investigated in a batch system with respect to initial concentration, contact time and temperature. Kinetic studies of the adsorption of erythrosine were carried out at 298 K, using aqueous solutions with 100, 250 and 500 mg/L concentration of erythrosine. The adsorption process followed a pseuo second order model, and the adsorption rate constant (k2) decreased with increasing the initial concentration of erythrosine. The equilibrium process can be well discribed by Freundlich isotherm in the temperature range from 298 to 318 K. Free energy of adsorption (${\Delta}G^o$), enthalpy (${\Delta}H^o$), and entropy (${\Delta}S^o$) change were calculated to predict the nature the adsorption. The estimated values for ${\Delta}G^o$ were -3.72~-9.62 kJ/mol over the activated carbon at 250 mg/L, indicated toward a spontaneous process. The positve value for ${\Delta}H^o$ indicates that the adsorption of erythrosine dye on activated carbon is an endothermic process.

  • A natural habit at bacterium, Enterobacter intermedious KH410 was isolated from freshwater plant root and identified. Adsorption of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and copper by this strain was examined. The minimal inhibitory concentrations(MIC) for each metal were 1.78 mM for lead, 0.17 mM for cadmium and 1.39 mM for lopper, respectively. Maximum production of dried cell was 2.56 g/$\ell$ in LB medium containing 0.5% NaCl, 1% yeast extract and 1% of lactose. Optimal conditions for adsorption were 0.6 dry g-biomass, at pH 4.0 and the temperature of $20^{\circ}C$. Adsorption equilibrium reached maximum after 30 min in 400 mg/$\ell$ metal solution. The adsorption capacity (K) of copper was 1.5 times higher than that of cadmium and lead was 1.1 times higher than that of cadmium. from the results obtained in this study, Freundlich adsorption model was applicable for all metals. Adsorption strength (1/n) of heavy metal ions were in the order of cadmium>copper>lead. The adsorption of dried cell for lead, cadmium, and copper was 56.2, 58.0, 55.8 mg/g-biomass, respectively. Pretreatment to increase ion strength was the most effective with 0.1 M NaOH whereas slight difference was found both KOH and $CaCl_2$ upon same concentration. Effective desorption was induced by 0.1 M EDTA for lead and 0.1 M $HNO_2$ for cadmium and copper.

  • Characteristics of adsorption equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic of aniline blue onto activated carbon from aqueous solution were investigated as function of initial concentration, contact time and temperature. Adsorption isotherm of aniline blue was analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich models. Langmuir isotherm model fit better with isothermal data than other isotherm models. Estmated Langmuir separation factors ($R_L=0.036{\sim}0.068$) indicated that adsorption process of aniline blue by activated carbon could be an effective treatment method. Adsorption kinetic data were fitted to pseudo first order model, pseudo second order model and intraparticle diffusion models. The kinetic results showed that the adsorption of aniline blue onto activated carbon well followed pseudo second-order model. Adsorption mechanism was evaluated in two steps, film diffusion and intraparticle diffusion, by intraparticle diffusion model. Thermodynamic parameters such as Gibbs free energy, enthalpy and entropy for adsorption process were estimated. Enthalpy change (48.49 kJ/mol) indicated that this adsorption process was physical adsorption and endothermic. Since Gibbs free energy decreased with increasing temperature, the adsorption reaction became more spontaneously with increasing temperature. The isosteric heat of adsorption indicated that there is interaction between the adsorbent and the adsorbate because the energy heterogeneity of the adsorbent surface.

  • Adsorption characteristics of carbol fuchsin (CF) dye by coal-based activated carbon (CAC) were investigated using pH, initial concentration, temperature and contact time as adsorption variables. CF dissociates in water to have a cation, NH2+, which is bonded to the negatively charged surface of the activated carbon in the basic region by electrostatic attraction. Under the optimum condition of pH 11, 96.6% of the initial concentration was adsorbed. Isothermal adsorption behavior was analyzed using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich models. Langmuir's equation was the best fit for the experimental results. Therefore, the adsorption mechanism was expected to be adsorbed as a monolayer on the surface of activated carbon with a uniform energy distribution. From the evaluated Langmuir's dimensionless separation coefficients (RL = 0.503~0.672), it was found that CF can be effectively treated by activated carbon. The adsorption energies determined by Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich models were E = 15.31~7.12 J/mol and B = 0.223~0.365 kJ/mol, respectively. Therefore, the adsorption process was physical (E < 20 J/mol, B < 8 kJ/mol). The experimental result of adsorption kinetics fit better the pseudo second order model. In the adsorption reaction of CF dye to CAC, the negative free energy change increased as the temperature increased. It was found that the spontaneity also increased with increasing temperature. The positive enthalpy change (40.09 kJ/mol) indicated an endothermic reaction.

  • The adsorption/desorption behavior and separation conditions of vanadium and tungsten ions were investigated using a gel-type anion-exchange resin. In the adsorption experiment with the initial acidity of the solution, the adsorption rate of vanadium was remarkably low in strong acids and bases. Additionally, the adsorption rate of tungsten was low in a strong base. An increase in the reaction temperature increased the adsorption reaction rate and maximum adsorption. The effect of tungsten on the maximum adsorption was minimal. The adsorption isotherms of vanadium and tungsten on the ion-exchange resin were suitable for the Langmuir adsorption isotherms of both the ions. For tungsten, the adsorption isotherms of vanadium and tungsten were polyoxometalate. Both ion-exchange resins were simulated using similar quadratic reaction rate models. Vanadium was desorbed in the aqueous solutions of HCl or NaOH, the desorption characteristics of vanadium and tungsten depended on the desorption solution, and tungsten was desorbed in the aqueous solution of NaOH. It was possible to separate the two ions using the desorption process. The desorption reaction reached equilibrium within 30 min, and more than 90% recovery was possible.

  • The feasibility of using volcanic ash for lead ion removal from wastewater was evaluated. The adsorption experiments were carried out in batch tests using volcanic ash that was treated with either NaOH or HCl prior to the use. Volcanic ash dose, temperature and initial Pb(II) concentration were chosen as 3 operational variables for a $2^3$ factorial design. Ash dose and concentration were found to be significant factors affecting Pb(II) adsorption. The removal of Pb(II) was enhanced with increasing volcanic ash dose and with decreasing the initial Pb(II) concentration. Pb(II) adsorption on the volcanic ash surface was spontaneous reaction and favored at high temperatures. Calculation of Gibb's free energy indicated that the adsorption was endothermic reaction. The equilibrium parameters were determined by fitting the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms, and Langmuir model better fitted to the data than Freundlich model. BTV(base-treated volcanic ash) showed the maximum adsorption capacity($Q_{max}$) of 47.39mg/g. A pseudo second-order kinetic model was fitted to the data and the calculated $q_e$ values from the kinetic model were found close to the values obtained from the equilibrium experiments. The results of this study provided useful information about the adsorption characteristics of volcanic ash for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solution.

  • A laboratory study on the adsorption of nitrate in polluted coastal water using various materials including several types of dredged sediments(ST) and yellow c1ays(YC), which are activated by heat(HT), bioleaching for heavy metal removal(BL) and neutralization(NR) was performed. The equilibrium time of the adsorption for the sediment bioleached and treated by heat(BL-HT-ST) was only 17min which was faster than the sediment bioleached, neutralized and treated by heat(BL-NR-HT-S) (25min) or the sediment treated by the bioleaching process(BL -ST)(27min), but longer equilibrium times for yellow c1ay(YC) or heat treated yellow day(HT- YC) were required. The adsorption processes of nitrate in sea water for tested material could be described by Freundlich isotherm, but were significantly affected by surface characteristics of the materials. The adsorption capacities for raw sediment and heat treated sediment were 2.12 and 2.19mg NO3-N/g, respectively, which were higher than others, indicating that the sediment activated by heat could be used as a material for the improvement of nearshore water quality.

  • Korean pine(Pinus densiflora) bark was evaluated for its adsorption capacity of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution by running a series of batch experiments. Prior to the tests, the milled barks were treated with 1 N NaOH or 1 N HCl to examine the effect of surface modification. For comparison, untreated bark was tested under same condition. Within the tested pH range between 3 and 6, NaOH treatment increased Cu(II) adsorption capacity by $139\sim184%$, while HCl treatment decreased it by $37\sim42%$. Maximum copper ion uptake by bark was observed at pH $5\sim6$, but pH of solution was not a potent influence. A pseudo second-order kinetic model fitted well for the sorption of copper ion onto bark. For NaOH-treated bark, the calculated sorption capacity$(q_e)$ increased from 6.58 to 12.77 mg/g, while the equilibrium rate constant$(k_2)$ decreased from 0.284 to 0.014 g/mg/min as initial Cu(II) concentration doubled from 100 mg/L. A batch isotherm test using NaOH-treated bark showed that equilibrium sorption data were represented by both the Langmuir model and the Freundlich model. It was confirmed that carboxylic acid of bark was involved in the Cu(II) adsorption. For NaOH-treated bark, in particular, carboxylate ion produced by hydrolysis or saponification appeared to be a major functional roup responsible for the enhanced Cu(II) sorption.
