Chemical analysis of salted fish was analyzed in 60 samples collected from various moloha markets in Sohag, Qena and Aswan Governorates, Upper Egypt. Moloha contained 52.9% water content, while organic matter content represented 71.79% of dry weight and 33.81%($338.12{\pm}8.64mg\;g^{-1}$) of fresh weight. Total salts and soluble salts represented 13.29% and 10.19%($132.88{\pm}7.65\;and\;101.93{\pm}5.76mg\;g^{-1}$ of fresh weight), respectively. pH values were more or less neutral. Mycological investigation of examined samples revealed that fifty-five fungal species and one variety belonging to 11 genera were identified. The fungal genera of highest occurrence and their respective number of species were Aspergillus(A. flavus, A. niger, A. fumigatus, A. montevidensis, A. ficuum, A. parasiticus and A. mangini) and Penicillium(P. citrinum, P. puberulum, P. aurantiogriseum and P. roquefortii). On the other hand, yeast represented 18.2% and 3.0% of total counts of fungi on Czapeks-dextrose agar and 15%NaCl-Czapeks-dextrose agar media, respectively. Samples were assayed for potential presence of mycotoxins. Ten out of 60 samples(16.7%) were proved to be toxic. It is the first record of mycotoxins contamination of salted fish in Egypt. The ability of 340 isolates of recovered fungi was screened for production of mycotoxins and extracellular enzymes.
In order to find the effects of seed size on the early seedling growth and yield of soybean, three soybean cultivars in Korea were investigated. Seed size was classified into large and small according to the weight and planted in pots(1/5000a) and in the field. Three soybean cultivars respresenting large, medium and small grains were Hwangkeum-kong, Kwangkyo and Bangsa-kong respectively. These cultivars were planted on June 20, 1987. 1. The plant height, stem diameter, root length and leaf area index(LAI) of the seed with large size seemed larger than the seed with small size regardless of cultivars. 2. The fresh and dry weight were different depending upon the grain sizes. The large grain had heavier fresh and dry weight than the small grains. 3. The protein consumption rate of the cotyledon of Bangsa-kong with small grain size was faster than the Hwangkeum-kong with large grain size. 4. The stem length, stem diameter and number of main stem node of the seed with large size seemed larger than the seed with small size. Large grains of Hwangkeum-kong were the highest in the number of branch node and number of node. 5. The number of pods and grains per plant of Bangsa-kong with small grain size was larger than the Kwangkyo with large grain size. 6. The yield per 10a for Hwangkeum-kong, Hwangkyo and Bangsa-kong were 226.3kg, 193.0kg and 192.8kg, respectively and they were all statistically different. The yield increases of large grains over small grains in the Hwangkeum-kong, Kwangkyo, and Bangsa-kong were 7.4%, 8.0% and 9.2%, respectively.
This study was conducted to investigate the effece of NaCl concentrations on the growth, photosynthetic rate and mineral uptake of tomato, red pepper, and egg Plant in Pot culture. The growth such as plant height, plant fresh and dry weight, root fresh and dry weight and dried matter rate was decreased as NaCl concentrations were increased. Specially, the growth inhibition of tomato and egg plant was shown at over 40 mM NaCl, and that of red pepper at 20 mM NaCl. Yield of tomato and egg Plant was reduced at over 20 U NaCl, that of red pepper at over 10 mM NaCl. Yield reduction was affected by the number of fruit at low concentration and by mean weight and number of fruit at high concentration. Photosynthetic rate, water potential and stomatal conductance were decreased as NaCl concentrations were increased. The higher the concentration of NaCl, the lower the mineral uptake such as T-N, P, K, Ca and Mg, however, the higher the content of Na and Cl.

A series of experiments were conducted to assess the effectiveness of rhizobacteria containing 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase for growth promotion of peas under drought conditions. Ten rhizobacteria isolated from the rhizosphere of different crops (peas, wheat, and maize) were screened for their growth promoting ability in peas under axenic condition. Three rhizobacterial isolates, Pseudomonas fluorescens biotype G (ACC-5), P. fluorescens (ACC-14), and P. putida biotype A (Q-7), were selected for pot trial on the basis of their source, ACC deaminase activity, root colonization, and growth promoting activity under axenic conditions. Inoculated and uninoculated (control) seeds of pea cultivar 2000 were sown in pots (4 seeds/pot) at different soil moisture levels (25, 50, 75, and 100% of field capacity). Results revealed that decreasing the soil moisture levels from 100 to 25% of field capacity significantly decreased the growth of peas. However, inoculation of peas with rhizobacteria containing ACC deaminase significantly decreased the "drought stress imposed effects" on growth of peas, although with variable efficacy at different moisture levels. At the lowest soil moisture level (25% field capacity), rhizobacterial isolate Pseudomonas fluorescens biotype G (ACC-5) was found to be more promising compared with the other isolates, as it caused maximum increases in fresh weight, dry weight, root length, shoot length, number of leaves per plant, and water use efficiency on fresh and dry weight basis (45, 150, 92, 45, 140, 46, and 147%, respectively) compared with respective uninoculated controls. It is highly likely that rhizobacteria containing ACC deaminase might have decreased the drought-stress induced ethylene in inoculated plants, which resulted in better growth of plants even at low moisture levels. Therefore, inoculation with rhizobacteria containing ACC deaminase could be helpful in eliminating the inhibitory effects of drought stress on the growth of peas.
The effects of sizes and densities of cells cultured, conditioned medium, and media pH on the somatic embryogenesis of carrot (Daucus carota L.) were examined. A large number of globular embryoids was formed after 4 days in cell culture, and later globular embryoids developed into heart and torpedo shape. High cell density resulted in higher number and better growth of embryos, especially on conditioned medium than Murashige-Skoog medium. The fresh weight and number of embryoids formed increased with the decrease in cell size. The significant reduction in fresh weight and number of embryoids was obtained when culturing cells with diameter of over 90 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Dry weight and number of embryoids were markedly reduced with medium pH of 4 or 7, but promoted with pH 6.0.

This study was carried out to investigate seedling quality, growth characteristics and yield of hot pepper (Capsicum annum) grown in the open field according to seedling growth periods (SGPs) of 45, 55, 65, 75, and 85 days. Before planting, plant height, node number, leaf area, fresh and dry weight of seedlings were high in longer-SGP treatments, the T/R ratio was high in SGP 45 and SGP 85 treatments compared with other treatments. At 10 weeks after planting, plant height, stem diameter and leaf area of plants treated with SGP 45 and SGP 55 were significantly higher compared to other treatments. Fresh and dry weight of the plant with SGP 45 treatment was greatest, however, the dry matter percentage with SGP 45 was low compared to other treatments. Fruiting number and weight per plant were highest in SGP 45 treatment. Shorter SGP treatments such as 45 and 55 days gave greatly increased total weight of ripened fruit at 18 weeks after planting. Our results showed that SGP for hot pepper grown in the open field influences plant growth parameters and marketable yield, so that SGP 45 to SGP 55 is optimum to cultivate hot pepper plant.
This study was initiated to investigate the effect of chitosan on creeping bentgrass growth. Chitosan was applied several times in dilution of 300, 500 and 800 times at ten-day intervals after transplanting. Such growth characteristics as leaf length, root length, numbers of leaves, fresh weight and dry weight and chlorophyll content were observed. Treatment of 500 times diluted chitosan resulted in the longest root length, being 31.5cm while the control the shortest root of 25.1cm. Leaf numbers were 27.9 and 45.5, respectively for the control and the 300 times treatment. The highest chlorophyll content was associated with treatment of 300 times diluted chitosan and the lowest one with the control, resulting in 11.9 and $18.4mg/100cm^2$, respectively. We found that leaf number, chlorophyll content, fresh and dry weight were higher in the treatment of 500 times than the other treatments.
The changes of kernel size, contents of moisture and total sugar, and rates of flavor and stickiness of a waxy corn (cv. Hongcheon native) were observed from 15 days after silking (DAS) to 40 DAS at Suwon and Cheongju in 1984, nespectively. Fresh kernel length and width greatly increased from 15 DAS to 30 DAS and slightly increased thereafter. Fresh 100-kernel weight was markedly increased during 15 DAS to 30 DAS, and slightly and continuously increased thereafter while dry 100-kernel weight almost linearly increased with maturity. Total sugar content of fresh kernel was the highest at 20 DAS and then continuously decreased with maturity. Flavor and stickiness rates of boiled waxy corn were significantly increased during 15 DAS to 30 DAS and flavor rate decreased thereafter. However, stickiness rate maintained the level until 35 DAS and then decreased slightly. The optimum harvest date for fresh waxy corn seems to be about 30 DAS considering kernel size, and flavor and stickiness rates of boiled corn.
Forage productivity of Job's tears (Coix lachryma-jobi L.) and adlay (C. lachryma-jobi var. mayuen (ROMAN.) STAPF) and a hybrid corn (Kwangog) and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid (Pioneer 988) was compared in the southern part of Korea where black streaked dwarf virus' (BSDV) is prevalent. Emergence of Job's tears and adlay was more delayed compared to a corn or sorghum-sudangrass hybrid under the drought field conditions. Early growth and regrowth of Job's tears and adlay were less than those of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid. Fresh weight, dry weight, and digestible dry matter of Job's tears and adlay cut once approximately 40 days after flowering were much higher than those of two cuts at every flowering stage. Dry weight of one-cut Job's tears and ad lay harvested 40 days after flowering was similar to the total dry weight of three-cut sorghum-sudangrass hybrid but higher than that of silage corn. Digestible dry matter production was greater in the order of sorghum-sudangrass, corn, one-cut and two-cut Job's tears and adlay. Corn was severely infected with BSDV, but digestible dry matter was relatively high due to its higher in vitro dry matter digestibility. Among the Job's tears and adlay varieties, a variety of Job's tears with globular fruit shape was best for forage production due to its taller plant height, thick stem, wider leaf blades, higher leaf blade/total dry weight ratio, and higher forage yield. However, hulled grain yield of ad lay varieties was higher than that of Job's tears due to a higher hulled/rough grain ratio although they had similar rough grain yields.

This study was carried out to find out the effect of by-product gypsum(phosphogypsum, PG) application on enhancement of turf quality. For the first experiment, 10 ton $ha^{-1}$ PG was applied to 1m${\times}$10m (width${\times}$length) Plots with 4 replicates on a sloping area of fairway where turf(Zoysia japonica L.) was grown. Both top- and sub-soil samples were collected before and after treatment and were analyzed for pH, EC(e1ectrica1 conductivity), Ca and Mg contents. At the same time when soil samples were collected, specific color difference sensor value(SCDSV) that represented chlorophyll contents, fresh and dry weight of the turf were determined to find out the effect of PG treatment on turf growth. SCDSV of turf from PG treated plots measured at 98 and 147 days after treatment were significantly higher than those from control. Considering higher fresh and dry weight of leaf per unit area from PG treated plots than that from control, it was concluded that the elevated Ca and S level of the PG treated plots resulted in vigorous leaf growth of turf. For the second experiment 2, 5 and 10 ton $ha^{-1}$ PG were applied to 1m${\times}$10m(width${\times}$length) Plots with 3 replicates at a closer location as was used for the first experiment to find out the appropriate PG application rate. Before and after treatment soil and plant samples were collected and were analyzed by the same way as the first experiment. The pH of all the soil samples collected from PG treated plots at 38 days after treatment was lower than that from control. This trend changed as time passed. However, the pH of the soil from 10 ton $ha^{-1}$ PG treated plot was lower than that from control during the whole period of the second experiment. SCDSV, fresh and dry weight of leaf from PG treated plots at all 3 rates were higher than those from control for the second experiment. PG application to turf will be beneficial for both mass consumption of by-product gypsum and enhancement of turf quality.
