Residues of Diazinon in Growing Chinese cabbage: A study Under Greenhouse Conditions

  • Chinese cabbage, Braccica campestris has long been consumed as a staple food for Koreans in various forms of fresh, salted, and fermented Kimchi. Cultivation of the crop under greenhouse has become a general practices to fulfill its off-seasonal consumer's demand. However, agricultural practices of the crop have always accompanied with heavy applications of pesticides caused by severe outbreaks of diseases and pose under warm and humid circumferences. Since dissipation patterns of pesticide residues in/on the crop under greenhouse conditions ate quite different from those in the open-air, changes of diazinon, O,O-diethyl O-2-isopropyl-6-methylpyrimidin-4-yl phosphornthioate, in/on the Chinese cabbage applied by foliar spraying under greenhouse were studied. Diazinon 34% EC was applied with dilution of recommended and double dose to the crop. The shoots of crop were harvested immediately after this application and at regular intervals over a 10-day. After sample preparations, the diazinon residue was analyzed using gas chromatography equipped with electron capture detector (GC/ECD). Initially deposited amount of the chemical in/on the crop right after applications with recommended and double doses were 8.3 and 15.2 mg/kg, respectively. The residue levels after 10 days of application were 0.03 and 0.09 mg/kg with 1.3 and 1.5 days of half-life in/on the crop, respectively. In consequent 10 days of pre-harvest interval (PHI) for diazinon EC formulation in/on Chinese cabbage under greenhouse condition was fulfill maximum residue level set by Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA, 0.1 mg/kg).

Evaluation of SERS Nanoparticles to Detect Bacillus cereus and Bacillus thuringiensis

  • Purpose: This research evaluated five types of nanoparticles to develop a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) method for the rapid detection of two Bacillus species (Bacillus cereus and Bacillus thuringiensis) that are commonly found on fresh produce, which can cause food poisoning. Methods: Bacterial concentrations were adjusted to a constant turbidity, and a total of $30{\mu}L$ of each Bacillus cell suspension was prepared for each nanoparticle. A point-scan Raman system with laser light source of wavelength 785 nm was used to obtain SERS data. Results: There was no qualitative difference in the SERS data of B. cereus and B. thuringiensis for any of the five nanoparticles. Three gold nanoparticles, stabilized in either citrate buffer or ethanol, showed subtle differences in Raman intensities of two Bacillus species at $877.7cm^{-1}$. Conclusions: Among the three types of nanoparticles, the gold nanoparticles stabilized in citrate buffer showed the lowest standard deviation, followed by gold nanoparticles stabilized in ethanol. This result supports the potential application of gold nanoparticles for SERS-based detection of B. cereus and B. thuringiensis.

시판 흑마늘의 항산화 및 Nitrosodimethylamine의 생성억제 (Antioxidant and Inhibition of Nitrosodimethylamine Formation in Marketing Black Garlics)

  • 시판되는 남해산 흑마늘 4제품(A, B, C 및 D)을 이용하여 항산화 활성, 아질산염 소거 및 nitrosodimethylamine(NDMA) 생성억제 활성을 비교하였다. 마늘 중 total pyruvate와 thiosulfate 함량은 생마늘보다 흑마늘에서 높았으며, B제품에서 가장 높은 함량이었다. 흑마늘의 물 및 에탄올 추출물에서 총 페놀과 플라보노이드 함량은 물 추출물에서 높았으며, 흑마늘은 생마늘 추출물보다 높은 함량으로 A제품에서 다소 높게 정량되었다. 항산화 활성으로 DPPH, ABTs, hydroxyl 및 nitric oxide 라디칼 소거활성을 비교한 결과, 흑마늘이 생마늘보다 높았으며, 물 추출물이 에탄올 추출물보다 높은 소거활성을 보였고, A와 B제품간의 항산화 활성은 비슷한 경향이었다. 아질산염 소거활성과 NDMA 생성억제 활성은 항산화 활성과 동일한 경향이었으며, A제품의 활성이 유의적으로 높았다. 따라서 흑마늘의 NDMA 생성억제 활성이 항산화 활성과 유사한 패턴을 보이고 있는 바, 흑마늘은 생체 내 암 발생의 억제에도 영향을 줄 것으로 예상되었다.

스토리텔링 마케팅이 소비자의 가치 인식 및 가격 지불의사에 미치는 영향 분석 - 스마트팜 재배 과채류를 사례로 - (An Analysis of the Effect of Storytelling Marketing on Consumers' Value Perception and Willingness to Pay - The Case of Fruits and Vegetables Grown in Smart Farms -)

  • Smart farm farmers invest a lot of facility costs, time and effort. Product differentiation using storytelling marketing is important for the profitability of smart farms, since it is not easy to differentiate products between fruits and vegetables grown in smart farms and conventional facilities. This study empirically analyzes the effect of storytelling marketing on consumers' value perception and willingness to pay for fruit and vegetables grown in smart farms. For this purpose, the survey is conducted on 1,050 consumers and the main results are as follows. First, as a result of evaluating consumers' value perception, consumers perceive the value of comparative products (product 2 and 3) to be higher than the base product (product 1). Product 2 and 3 provide richer stories than product 1. Second, the willingness to pay for product 3, which provides the richest story, was the highest, followed by product 2, and then product 1. This means storytelling marketing could be an effective strategy that increases the value of fruits and vegetables grown in smart farms. Third, more than half of the respondents are willing to use QR codes when purchasing fresh agricultural products. Farmers could use QR codes to provide rich stories for effective storytelling marketing.

Effect of Sample Preparation on Prediction of Fermentation Quality of Maize Silages by Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy

  • Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) has become increasingly used as a rapid, accurate method of evaluating some chemical constituents in cereal grains and forages. If samples could be analyzed without drying and grinding, then sample preparation time and costs may be reduced. This study was conducted to develop robust NIRS equations to predict fermentation quality of corn (Zea mays) silage and to select acceptable sample preparation methods for prediction of fermentation products in corn silage by NIRS. Prior to analysis, samples (n = 112) were either oven-dried and ground (OD), frozen in liquid nitrogen and ground (LN) and intact fresh (IF). Samples were scanned from 400 to 2,500 nm with an NIRS 6,500 monochromator. The samples were divided into calibration and validation sets. The spectral data were regressed on a range of dry matter (DM), pH and short chain organic acids using modified multivariate partial least squares (MPLS) analysis that used first and second order derivatives. All chemical analyses were conducted with fresh samples. From these treatments, calibration equations were developed successfully for concentrations of all constituents except butyric acid. Prediction accuracy, represented by standard error of prediction (SEP) and $R^2_{v}$ (variance accounted for in validation set), was slightly better with the LN treatment ($R^2$ 0.75-0.90) than for OD ($R^2$ 0.43-0.81) or IF ($R^2$ 0.62-0.79) treatments. Fermentation characteristics could be successfully predicted by NIRS analysis either with dry or fresh silage. Although statistical results for the OD and IF treatments were the lower than those of LN treatment, intact fresh (IF) treatment may be acceptable when processing is costly or when possible component alterations are expected.

Investigation of Color Difference in ACQ and CBHDO Treated Wood During Two-year Outdoor Exposure

  • In general, when wood products are used outdoors for a certain period of time the surface color of wood changes due to light, water, heat and so on. This color change can be considered importantly for the product's market value. In this study, the color change of ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) and CBHDO (CuO $H_3BO_3$ N-cyclohexyldiazenium-anion) treated wood and untreated wood was investigated during 2-year weathering test. From this experimental study, it was found that the colors of the treated wood changed more reddish and yellowish from green. Meanwhile, the untreated wood turned to grey color rapidly. Also, the color of the treated wood in short-term exposure changed closer to the inherent color of the fresh natural wood than that of the untreated woods.

  • 수삼을 건삼, 홍삼 및 농축액으로 제조하는 과정 중 difenoconazole의 잔류특성을 구명하고 가공계수를 산출하기 위하여 본 연구를 수행하였다. 약제 살포는 2009년(4년근)과 2010년(5년근) 2년에 걸쳐 안전사용기준에 준하여 약제를 살포하였으며, 수확한 인삼은 (주)한국인삼공사의 공인된 방법으로 건삼과 홍삼으로 제조한 후 각각의 물과 알코올 농축액을 제조하였다. 수삼 중 시험농약의 검출한계와 정량한계는 0.001과 0.003 mg/kg이었으며, 가공품의 경우 0.002와 0.007 mg/kg이었다. 4년근 수삼 및 가공품의 잔류량은 0.006-0.017 mg/kg이었으며, 5년근 수삼 및 가공품의 잔류량은 0.042-0.196 mg/kg으로 5년근 수삼 및 가공품 잔류량이 4년근 수삼 및 가공품 잔류량 보다 증가하였다. 수삼과 가공품의 잔류량 비로 산출한 가공계수는 4년근 건삼의 경우 1.71-2.17, 홍삼 1.62-2.03, 농축액 1.76-2.98이었으며, 5년근의 경우 건삼 2.89-3.07, 홍삼 1.89-2.20, 농축액 2.36-4.67이었다.

Utilization of Faba Bean (Ficia faba) By-Products as Feed Ingredients for Lactating Cows

  • Sixteen Friesian Cows were allocated equally into 4 groups in a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design to evaluate the effects of utilizing bean by-products on the feed intake and milk production. Cows were fed on 4.5% of their body weight fresh alfalfa; the remainder of their requirements were covered by one of 4 experimental concentrate treatments: 1) commercial concentrate (CC), 2) 70% CC + 30% bean hulls (BH), 3) 70% CC + 30% Polished bean (PB) and 4) 70% CC+ 15% BH + 15% PB. Results showed that the inclusion of bean hulls at 30% improved (p<0.05) milk yield, 4% fat corrected milk yield, feed conversion ratio and fat percent of the milk over the other treatments. Feeding cows on a commercial concentrate plus 30% BH or 30% PB or 15% from each of BH and PB decreased the cost of feed per kg milk by 13.6, 2.5 and 1.3 %, respectively, lower than those fed on the commercial concentrate.

Effect of Vacuum Packaging on the Microbial Change of Chicken during Storage

  • To examine the effect of vacuum packaging on the quality of chicken during storage, microbial (total bacterial counts, mold and yeast, E. coli, and Pseudomonas) changes and drip loss were determined. fresh chicken breasts were prepared and packaged using polyethylene film under vacuum and normal atmosphere, respectively. Samples were then stored at 4$^{\circ}C$ for two weeks. At various time intervals during storage, sample was taken homogenized, and diluted with 0.1% sterile peptone water, and followed by microbial counts. Microbial changes of total bacterial counts, mold and yeast, E. coli, and Pseudomonas during storage of chicken were significantly decreased by vacuum packaging. Drip loss was also significantly decreased. These results indicate that vacuum packaging of chicken should be recommended as a suitable storage method in terms of microbial safety as well as quality of chicken.

Community of natural lactic acid bacteria and silage fermentation of corn stover and sugarcane tops in Africa

  • Objective: To effectively utilize crop by-product resources to address the shortage of animal feed during the dry season in Africa, the community of natural lactic acid bacteria (LAB) of corn stover and sugarcane tops and fermentation characteristics of silage were studied in Mozambique. Methods: Corn stover and sugarcane tops were obtained from agricultural field in Mozambique. Silage was prepared with LAB inoculant and cellulase enzyme and their fermentation quality and microbial population were analyzed. Results: Aerobic bacteria were the dominant population with 107 colony-forming unit/g of fresh matter in both crops prior to ensiling, while 104 to 107 LAB became the dominant bacteria during ensiling. Lactobacillus plantarum was more than 76.30% of total isolates which dominated silage fermentation in the LAB-treated sugarcane top silages or all corn stover silages. Fresh corn stover and sugarcane tops contain 65.05% to 76.10% neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and 6.52% to 6.77% crude protein (CP) on a dry matter basis, and these nutrients did not change greatly during ensiling. Corn stover exhibits higher LAB counts and water-soluble carbohydrates content than sugarcane top, which are naturally suited for ensiling. Meanwhile, sugarcane tops require LAB or cellulase additives for high quality of silage making. Conclusion: This study confirms that both crop by-products contain certain nutrients of CP and NDF that could be well-preserved in silage, and that they are potential roughage resources that could cover livestock feed shortages during the dry season in Africa.
