  • This study investigates a method of designing pixel-type frequency selective surfaces(FSS) with flexibility while considering factors, such as polarization and incident angle. Among the various methods used to solve the discrete space problem when designing a pixel-type FSS, the binary particle swarm optimization(BPSO) algorithm is one of the most applicable techniques to determine the periodic structure pattern of an FSS. Therefore, a method of efficiently designing FSS with roll-off band pass characteristics using an improved BPSO algorithm is proposed. To solve the convergence problem in the fitness function design to induce particles in the desired solution, FSS with desired roll-off wave characteristics can be easily obtained by applying a fitness function using "slope" as an input parameter.

  • The wave concept iterative procedure (WCIP) is used to analyze arbitrarily shaped frequency selective surfaces (FSS). The WCIP method is developed from the fast modal transform based on a two-dimensional fast Fourier transform algorithm. Using the proposed procedure, less computing time and memory are needed to calculate the scattering parameters of the FSS structure. The method is applied to the modeling of an FSS structure of a rectangular patch and a comparison with experimental results confirms good agreement.

  • In this paper, RCS characteristics on defect pattern of crossed dipole slot FSS having a finite size have been analyzed. To analyze RCS, we applied the electric field integral equation analysis which applies BiCGSTab algorithm with iterative method and uses RWG basis function. To verify the validity of this paper, RCS of PEC sphere has been compared to the theoretical results and FSSs with defect patterns are fabricated and measured. As defect patterns in FSS, missing one column, missing some elements, and discontinuity in surfaces are simulated and compared with the measurement results. Resonant frequency shifts in pass band and changes in bandwidth are observed. From the results, precisely predicting and designing frequency characteristics over defect patterns are essential when applying FSS structures such as FSS radomes.

  • An SIW cavity is a useful tool to design an FSS which shows a rapid roll-off rate and insensitivity to polarizations and incident angles of electromagnetic waves. However, due to its high Q-factor, the FSS also shows narrow bandwidth which is undesirable for high-capacity communication. To address this drawback, we propose a novel technique to enhance the bandwidth while maintaining similar frequency response characteristics and minimizing the increase of the overall thickness of the SIW cavity FSS. In order to verify the performance of the technique, simulated frequency responses will be provided. Also, a parameter which affects the bandwidth will be studied. Finally the stability to polarizations and incident angles will be observed through the simulated results.

  • Band-notched ultra-wideband (UWB) antennas using frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) are presented. The proposed antennas utilized the band rejection characteristic of typical FSS unit cells. We loaded the FSS unit cells on the same plane of planar UWB antenna. These antennas are designed to reject the interference from the wireless local area network band, 5.15-5.825 GHz in the UWB band, 3.1-10.6 GHz. The measured peak gains of the proposed antennas are more than 2 dBi at both operation edge and center frequencies, and sufficient to apply for commercial purpose. The antennas are small size and planar shape for the purpose of the small mobile application, and enhanced design freedom by using various existing FSS unit cells.

  • This paper conducts a study on the frequency-dependent filtering and blocking effects of a variety of periodic structures, dubbed frequency selective surface(FSS). The periodic structures of interest are 1D and 2D repeated patterns of metal patches or slots sitting on the interface between the two different regions in the layered media which will show the capacitive or inductive behaviors and incorporated with the electromagnetic bandgap(EBG) geometry as another stratified media. Besides the normal substances so called double positive(DPS)-type in the layered media, metamaterials of double negative(DNG) are considered as layering components on the purpose of investigating the unusual electromagnetic phenomena. Frequency responses of transmission(absorption in terms of scattering) and reflection will be calculated by a numerical analysis which can be validated by the comparison with the open literature and demonstrated for the periodic structures embedding metamaterials or not. Most importantly, numerous examples of FSS will present the useful guidelines to have absorption or reflection properties in the frequency domain.

  • The frequency selective surfaces(FSSs) with chessboard patterns are proposed and designed for the first time in this paper. We proposed the design parameters like slot and patch size, gap between slots or patches, and dielectric thickness of FSS chessboard unit cell proposed in this paper. Also, we found that the variation of design parameters can be used to control the frequency transmission characteristics like the resonant frequency or bandwidth of FSS. To validate the proposed FSS, we fabricated the proposed FSS with the use of 1.0mm FR4 for the bandpass operation at X-band and measured the transmission characteristics. From the results, the proposed FSS with chessboard type can be widely applied to application of the frequency controllable radome design because we can use the design parameters selectively.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the electromagnetic characteristics of the spherical frequency selective surface with different arrangement of crossed dipole slot elements for reducing the RCS(radar cross section). The three dimensional MOM(method of moment) with RWG basis is used to analyze the proposed structure. To reduce the simulation time, we applied the BiCGSTab(Biconjugate Gradient Stabilized) algorithm as an iterative method and presented the comparison results with Mie's theoretical results for PEC sphere to show the validity of this paper. From the simulation results, the different arrangement of elements array showed the difference RCS that cannot be negligible. The arrangement method of element in frequency selective surface will be one of variables for the design of curved frequency selective structures.

  • This paper introduces new wideband antenna-filter-antenna (AFA) uniform arrays that can be utilized as frequency selective surfaces (FSS) with low loss and sharp roll-off response, which are highly desirable characteristics for millimeter wave applications. The design adopts a simple 3-layer single polarization structure consisting of two patch antennas and a resonator. Both simulations and measurements are used to characterize the performances of the proposed design. Overall results show 18.5% 10-dB bandwidth. For the targeted band the insertion loss is less than 0.2 dB. Possible applications include quasi-optical amps, grid mixers and radomes for aircraft radar antennas.

  • This article presents a band-stop filter (BSF) by using a periodic structure property of frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) embedded in a microstrip transmission line. The proposed BSF is designed with FSS unit cells modifying the cross-loop slots. The BSF is interpreted with an equivalent circuit model and a dispersion diagram. The center frequency (fo) of the BSF is 6.6GHz. Proposed filter increases the number of unit cell. As a result, 3dB bandwidth is wider and insertion loss is reduced. Also, Facbricated BSF exhibits uniplanar geometry, simple fabrication.
