A new frequency offset estimation algorithm for chirp spread spectrum based on matched filter is proposed. Generally, the differential phase between successive symbols is used for the conventional frequency offset estimation algorithm. However, if the conventional frequency offset estimation algorithm is used for CSS, phase ambiguity arises because of long symbol duration and guard time. The phase ambiguity causes performance degradation of matched filter since the received signal is corrupted by the integer frequency offset. In this paper, we propose a new frequency offset estimation algorithm which separates integer and fractional frequency offset estimation for removing the phase ambiguity. The proposed algorithm estimates the integer frequency offset by using differential phase between matched filtering results of sub-chirps and successive symbols. Then, the fractional frequency offset is estimated by using the differential phase between successive symbols Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm well removes the phase ambiguity, and have almost same estimation performance compared with conventional one when there is not the phase ambiguity.

The correct estimation of the ionospheric delays is very important for the precise kinematic positioning especially in case of the long baseline. In case of triple frequency system, the ionospheric delays can be estimated from the measurements, but, in case of dual frequency system, the situation is not so simple. The precision of those supplied by the external information source such as IONEX is not sufficient. The high frequency component is neglected, and the precision of the low frequency component is not sufficient for the long baseline positioning. On the other hand, the high frequency component can be estimated from the phase range measurements. If the low frequency components are estimated by using the external information source or pseudo range measurements, a more reasonable estimation of the ionospheric delays may be possible. It has already been discussed by the author that the estimation of the low frequency components by using the external information source is not sufficient but fairly effective. The estimation using the pseudo range measurements is discussed in the present paper. The accuracy is not sufficient at present because of the errors in the pseudo range measurements. It is clarified that the bias errors in the pseudo range measurements are responsible for the poor accuracy of the ionospheric delays. However, if the accuracy of the pseudo range measurements is improved in future, the method would become very promising.

Frequency is an important operating parameter of a power system. Electric power systems sustain transient frequency swings whenever the balance between generation and load does not no longer hold. To cope with this constraints, it requires an accurate and high speedy frequency deviation estimation technique and suitable adjustment to obtain the Power system energy balance. This paper describes a digital signal processing technique for measuring the operating frequency of a power system. The fundamental frequency component of 3-phase signal is first extracted by using an algorithm based on FIR filter. The rate change of the phase angle is used for estimation. To confirm the validity of the proposed algorithm, the simulation studies carried out on a typical 154KV double T/L system by using EMTP software. Some test results are presented in the paper.

Voltage and current phasor estimation has been executed by GPS-based synchronized PMU, which has become an important way of wide-area blackout protection for the prevention of expending faults in a power system. The PMU technique can not easily get the field data and it is impossible to share information, so that there has been used a FNET(Frequency Monitoring Network) method for the wide-area intelligent protection in USA. It consists of FDR(Fault Disturbance Recorder) and IMS(Information Management System). Therefore, FDR must provide an optimal frequency estimation method that is robust to noise and failure. In this paper, we present comparative studies for the frequency estimation method using IRDWT(Improved Recursive Discrete Wavelet Transform), FRDWT(Fast Recursive Discrete Wavelet Transform), and DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform). The Republic of Korea345[kV] power system modeling data by EMTP-RV are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed two kinds of RDWT(Recursive Discrete Wavelet Transform) and DFT. The simulation results show that the proposed frequency estimation technique using FRDWT could be the optimal frequency measurement method, and thus be applied to FDR.

Power system frequency is the main index of power quality indicating an abnormal state and disturbances of systems. The nominal frequency is deviated by sudden change in generation and load or faults. Power system is used as frequency relay to detection for off-nominal frequency operation and connecting a generator to an electrical system, and V/F relay to detection for an over-excitation condition. Under these circumstances, power system should maintain the nominal frequency. And frequency and frequency deviation should accurately measure and quickly estimate by frequency measurement device. The well-known classical method, frequency estimation technique based on the DFT, could be produce the gain error in accuracy. To meet the requirements for high accuracy, recently Wavelet transforms and analysis are receiving new attention. The Wavelet analysis is possible to calculate the time-frequency analysis which is easy to obtain frequency information of signals. However, it is difficult to apply in real-time implementation because of heavy computation burdens. Nowadays, the computational methods using the Wavelet function and transformation techniques have been searched on these fields. In this paper, we apply the Recursive Discrete Wavelet Transform (RDWT) for the frequency estimation. In order to evaluate performance of the proposed technique, the user-defined arbitrary waveforms are used.

This paper proposes the channel estimation method robust to severe frequency selective fading channels in O%M system using wide bandwidth for the high data rate transmission. DDCE, which uses data between the high correlated symbols, is usually used for channel estimation in the slow fading channels. DDCE can get high gains in the non-selective channels. As the bandwidth of system gets wider, it becomes more severe frequency selective fading environments so that the reliability of data becomes lower and error flow is occurred. FE method, this paper proposed, uses the relation between sub-carriers of OFDM in frequency selective fading channels so FE method gets some gains by adapting the power value at a target frequency to the mean value of channel estimated values of adjacent sub-carriers. Because FE uses only preamble unlike DDCE using data, it is independent of data rate related to the reliability of data and the number of multipath. Consequently, FE can obtain considerable gains in the wideband systems where the errorflow of DDCE is occurred, and FE is applicable to frequency selective fading environments.

This paper presents a method to analyze the voltage sag data obtained from monitoring systems. In order to establish effective countermeasures against voltage sag problems, an assessment of the system performance with respect to voltage sags is needed. Generally, the average annual sag frequency can be estimated by using the recorded voltage sag events for several years. However, the simple average value can not give the information about the errors of estimation. Such an average estimation is not useful for establishing effective solutions for voltage sag problems. Therefore, this paper proposes an effective method based on the Interval Estimation method. The estimation of voltage sag frequency is performed by using the average frequency and Poisson probability model. The proposed method can give the expected annual sag frequency and upper one-sided bound frequency.

In this paper, we propose an efficient channel delay estimation method for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, especially over doubly-selective fading channels which are selective in both the symbol time domain and subcarrier frequency domain. For the doubly-selective fading channels in single frequency network (SFN), long and strong echoes exist and thus the conventional discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) based channel delay estimation system often fails to produce the exact channel delay profile. Based on the analysis of the discrete-time frequency response of the channel impulse response (CIR) coefficients in the DFT-based channel delay estimation system, we develop a method to effectively extract the true CIR from the aliased signals by employing a simple narrow-band low-pass filter (NB-LPF). The performance of the proposed system is verified using the COST207 TU6 SFN channel model.

The frequency is an important operation parameter for the control, protection, and stability of a power system. The frequency as a key index of power quality can be indicative of system abnormal conditions and disturbances. Due to the sudden change in generation and loads or faults in power system, the frequency is supposed to deviate from its nominal value. It is essential that the frequency must be maintained very close to its nominal frequency. An accurate monitoring of the power frequency is essential to optimal operation and prevention for wide area blackout. As most conventional frequency estimation schemes are based on DFT filter, it has been pointed out that the gain error could cause defects when the frequency is deviated from nominal value. This paper presents an advanced frequency estimation technique using gain compensation to improve the performance of DFT filter based techniques. To evaluate performance of the proposed algorithm, the 765kV T/L system in Korea is simulated by EMTP-RV software. The proposed technique can reduce the gain error caused when the power system frequency deviates from nominal value.

DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) is one of the most widely used method to estimate the phasor of a relaying signal. The harmonics are eliminated by the DFT. However, high frequency components, except for harmonics, are not removed and cause an error in DFT-based phasor estimation process. This paper suggests high frequency noise reduction method by using a newly designed low-pass filter to estimate a signal phasor. When selecting a stop-band cut-off frequency of the low-pass filter, high frequency components generated by faults are considered. To reduce the phasor estimation delay caused by a low-pass filter, this paper proposes a low-pass filter whose settling time is reduced. An adverse effect of high frequency noise on DFT-based phasor estimation is reduced. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, signals which are collected under a fault condition at a 345[kV] transmission system modeled by EMTP-RV are used.
