This study was attempted in order to investigate the effects of superplasticizers on fresh and hardened concrete. The experimental program included tests on the slump and slump loss, bleeding, time of set, air content, the compacting, factor Vee Dee, compressive strength, tensile and flexural strength, permeability, shrinkage and freege-thaw durability. The major conclusions that can be drawn on the study are as follows. 1. Superplasticizers were observed to have an appreciable fluidifying action in fresh concrete so that tinder appropriate conditions, they either considerably improved its workability or permitted a water reduction of at least 8-12% to be made while maintaining normal workability. 2. The bleeding ratios of base and S,P. Concrete were much lower than those of the conventional concrete. Differences between the base and S.P. Concrete were insignifician. 3. The setting time was the longest for conventionla concrete, followed by S.P. concrete and base concrete in thatorder. And AE water reduction admixtures showed an appreciable influence on the setting and hardening characteristics of concrete and prolonged the stiffening times. 4. The high initial slump values of S.P. concrete generally decreased rapidly with increased standing time. CF values showed increasing tendencies with the increase of S.P. content, and excessive addition of S.P. caused the segregation of fresh concrete, resulting in its rejection. 5. Though there was a slight increase in strength, no significant differences are observed between base and S.P. concrete in terms of the compressive, tensile and flexural strength. 6. The permeability of S.P. concrete was significantly less than that of the conventional concrete, and the shrinkage of S.P. concrete was considerably smaller than that of the conventional concrete, but there were no significant differences between base and S.P. concrete. 7. Compared to base concrete, S.P. concrete without entrained air tended to slightly increase freeze-thaw durability, and S.P. concrete with an appropriate entrained air gave satisfactory resistance to freezing and thawing.

This paper presents the results of experimental work on both strength characteristics and durability of concrete or mortar having 50% ground granulate blastfurnace slag(GBS) with different fineness levels (4,450, 6,000 and $8,000cm^2/g$). Compressive and split tensile strength test results indicated that the concrete with a higher fineness level of GBS exhibited a better strength development due to the acceleration of latent hydraulic property at the later curing stage compared with ordinary portland cement concrete. Meanwhile, it was found that a higher fineness level of GBS showed some negative effects on the resistance against freezing-thawing action. However, incorporation of GBS to concrete, irrespective of fineness levels, significantly enhanced the chloride ions penetration resistance. The resistance against sulfate attack of mortar with GBS was greatly dependent on the attacking sources from sulfate environments.

This research studies the behavior of the FRP-concrete interface subjected to two environmental substances. Frist is to investigate the behavior by the application of different bonding materials at the interface between FRP and concrete, second is to understand a long-term performance at the interface by Freeze-thaw actions. The parameters considered in this research are the maximum bonding strength and the effective bonding length at the FRP-concrete interface. In the first experimental phase, three types of specimens are fabricated and tested considering the number of applied bonding materials and the Freeze-thaw tests are performed to evaluate the behavior of the interface in the cycle range of 0 to 300 cycles. Finally, it is known that there is a 5~7% difference of the effective bonding length between applied bonding materials and the values for the maximum stress and the effective length under Freeze-thaw action are varied randomly as the freeze-thaw cycle is increased even though initial reduction of their capacities are occurred.

This paper presents an evaluation of engineering properties in TDFA(Tire Derived Fuel Ash)- based concrete in early age. Concrete containing 0.5 of w/b(water to binder) ratio and 20% of FA(Fly Ash) replacement ratio are prepared, and FA content are replaced with TDFA from 3% to 12% for evaluating the effect of TDFA on fresh and hardened concrete properties. With higher than 6% of TDFA replacement ratio, workability is significantly worsened but it is improved with more SP(Super plasticizer) and AE(Air Entrainer) agent. Concrete with 6~12% of TDFA shows reasonable strength development and better resistance to carbonation and chloride attack in spite of early-aged condition. However concrete with 6% TDFA shows poor resistance to freezing and thawing action due to insufficient air content. If air content and workability are obtained, replacement of TDFA to 12% can be used for concrete with FA.

Concrete undergoes various deterioration on surface. Impregnant with silicate is usually applied to concrete surface and forms insoluble hydrates, which can provide many engineering advantages. In the work, concrete impregnated with colloidal silicate is used for durability enhancement in surface and self-clearing performance is evaluated with photocatalyst-$TiO_2$ spraying. For the work, various tests are performed both for strength evaluation and durability evaluation such as absorption ratio, drying shrinkage, chloride penetration, sulfate resistance, and freezing/ thawing action. Furthermore, removal and self-clearing performance are evaluated with Acetaldehyde decomposition and Methylene blue decolorization. Through silicate impregnation and photocatalyst spraying, the impregnated concrete can have not only durability enhance but also self-clearing performance.
Rates and processes of bare patch denudation were observed at Janggumokoreum(1,710m) and Minoruem(1,600m) in order to clarify some characteristics of turf exfoliation in the subalpine grassland of Mt. Halla. The bare patches have marginal terrace fronts with a maximum height of 85 cm. The terrace risers usually develop an overhanging edge 2 to 38 cm long that eventually hangs down and protects the riser beneath. The patches are largely covered with angular pebbles and cobbles. The mean rate of riser retreat for the period 2002-2004 is 39.2 mm, equivalent to 19.6 mm/yr. However, there is a disparity of the rate of riser retreat at individual sites. The maximum rate is 131 mm measured at Janggumokoreum patch while the minimum rate is 0 mm at Minoreum patch. The rate of riser retreat also varies with seasons. The thawing season of April exhibits a maximum rate of retreat. The freezing season of October and November and the rainy season of June and July show relatively high rates of retreat. Several Processes such as frost action, aeolian deflation, rainwash, rainsplash and fauna activity cause the denudation of bare patches. In particular, the needle ire action which is combined with rainwash or deflation plays a primary role in turf exfoliation due to the diurnal freeze-thaw cycles occurred over 100 days, melted snow and strong wind in the subalpine zone of Mt. Halla. Rainwash is also an important contributing process in the rainy season because Mt. Halla has the highest precipitation in Korea. By contrast, rainsplash erosion has a minor effect on the bare patch denudation due to the overhanging edge of terrace risers. Recent increase in roe deer appears to be responsible for turf destruction.

Sheaths are arranged in the web and lower part of prestressed-concrete girder bridges, and prestressing wires and concrete are indirectly bonded together by filling interior parts of the sheaths. However, when the filling is not sufficient, water can penetrate the interior parts of the sheaths and, thereby, prestressing wires can be corroded or transverse cracks would occur around sheaths by the freezing and thawing action of the penetrated water. Therefore, it is an important element in maintenance management of structures to find out the sheaths unfilled with grout early after construction. In this paper, in order not to damage bridge members, the impact-echo method with a new approach in application is used to probe sheaths unfilled with grout for real structures. The location of sheaths is first estimated with reinforcing bar probing instrument of radar type and the measurement locations of sheaths are determined. By sending elastic wave to the side of girders and receiving the response, the location of the unfilled part of a sheath was estimated from the difference between high frequency peak and twice the resonance frequency indicating thickness. To verify the location of void estimated by the impact-echo method, pictures were taken by an industrial fiber scope after drilling a hole.

This research was carried out to estimate annual erosion and retreat rates by using datum-point and to identify the characteristics and causes of seasonal variations of sea-cliff slope in Pado-ri, Taean-gun. In the result, the erosion and retreat rates of sea-cliff were increased from spring to summer. The rates were increased rapidly between August and October, caused by the effects of extreme weather events such as severe rainstorms and typhoons, etc. Since then, the erosion and retreat rates of sea-cliff were decreased gradually, but the rates were increased again in winter due to the storm surge and mechanical weathering resulting from the repeated freezing and thawing actions of bed rocks. The factors that affect erosion and retreat rates of sea-cliff include the number of days with antecedent participation and daily maximum wave height. In particular, it turned out that the erosion is accelerated by strong wave energy during storm surges and typhoons. The annual erosion and retreat rates of study area for the past two years(from May 2010 to May 2012) were approximately 44~60cm/yr in condition of differences in geomorphological and geological characteristics at each point. These erosion and retreat rates were found to be higher than results of previous researches. This is caused by coastal erosion forces strengthened by extreme weather events. The erosion and retreat process of sea-cliff in the study area is composed by denudation of onshore areas in addition to marine erosion(wave energy).

When GGBFS(Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) with high blaine is incorporated in concrete, compressive strength in the initial period is improved, but several engineering problems arise such as heat of hydration and quality control. In this paper, compressive strength and durability performance of concrete with 3,000 Grade-low fineness slag are evaluated. Three conditions of concrete mixtures are considered considering workability, and the related durability tests are performed. Although the strength of concrete with 3,000 Grade slag is slightly lower than the OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement) concrete at the age of 28 days, but insignificant difference is observed in long-term compressive strength due to latent hydration activity. The durability performances in concrete with low fineness slag show that the resistances to carbonation and freezing/thawing action are slightly higher than those of concrete with high fineness slag, since reduced unit water content is considered in 3,000 Grade slag mixture. For the long-term age, the chloride diffusion coefficient of the 3000-grade slag mixture is reduced to 20% compared to the OPC mixture, and the excellent chloride resistance are evaluated. Compared with concrete with OPC and high fineness GGBFS, concrete with lower fineness GGBFS can keep reasonable workability and durability performance with reduced water content.
