  • In order to obtain a new heat transfer fluid having a high thermal capacity, micro-capsules of a phase-change material can be a successful candidate to be added into water. In this study, 25, 50, 100, and $200\mu$m diameter micro-encapsulated Lauric acids were tested by a differential scanning calorimeter. The Lauric acid itself had a single freezing curve, but the micro-encapsulated Lauric acid had double freezing curves. The second freezing dominated for $25\mu$m diameter Lauric acids. But the first freeing energy became big as the size of the capsule increased.

  • Most studies have conducted cryogenic triaxial compression tests with frozen specimens prepared in a separate mold by one-directional freezing. This method has the potential to generate residual stress in a frozen specimen and cannot be adopted to simulate the application of the artificial ground freezing method in the field. Therefore, in this study, novel equipment and procedure for the cryogenic triaxial compression test were proposed to overcome the limitations of existing test methods. Therefore, the mechanical characteristics of frozen sand, considering the effect of temperature and confining pressure, were evaluated. As the freezing temperature decreased, the brittleness of frozen sand increased, and the strength increased due to a decrease in the unfrozen water content and an increase in the ice strength. A higher confining pressure resulted in an increase in interparticle friction and the pressure melting phenomenon, which caused strength reduction. Thus, it was found that the mechanical behaviors of frozen sand were simultaneously affected by both temperature and confining pressure.

  • Hexadecane and exfoliated graphite nanoplate (xGnP)composite was prepared as a shape-stabilized phase change material (SSPCM) in a vacuum to develope thermal energy storage. The Hexadecane as an organic phase change material (PCM) is very stable against phase separation of PCM and has a melting point at $18^{\circ}C$ that is under the thermally comfortable temperature range in buildings. The xGnP is a porous carbon nanotube material with high thermal conductivity. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transformation infrared spectrophotometer (FT-IR)were used to confirm the chemical and physical stability of Hexadecane/xGnP SSPCM. In addition, thermal properties were determined by Deferential scanning calorimeter(DSC) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The specific heat of Hexadecane/xGnPSSPCM was $10.0J/g{\cdot}K$ at $21.8^{\circ}C$. The melting temperature range of melting and freezing were found to be $16-25^{\circ}C$ and $17-12^{\circ}C$. At this time, the laten heats of melting and freezing were 96.4J/g and 94.8J/g. The Hexadecane was impregnated into xGnP as much about 48.8% of Hexadecane/xGnP SSPCM's mass fraction.

  • The thermal characteristics of solid nitrogen are investigated by experiment and analysis for the purpose of evaluating its feasibility as a cooling medium for HTS (high T$_{c}$ superconductor) magnets. A cryostat to refrigerate a liquid-nitrogen container well below its freezing temperature with a 2-stage GM cryocooler is designed and constructed. The spatial distribution of temperature is measure as a function of time during the freezing and melting processes. from which the thermal diffusivity of solid nitrogen can be approximately calculated. the freezing process is formulated and solved by the integral method with an assumption of phase equilibrium at the solid-liquid interface and experimental observation. It may be concluded that the thermal diffusion in solid phase is much slower than in liquid and the degree of super-saturation is quite severe in the solidification of nitrogen.n.

  • Urea-SCR system is the selective catalytic reduction to reduce nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) emitted from diesel vehicles. The objective of this study is numerical analysis of 3-dimensional unsteady melting problems of frozen urea by using an electric heater. It can be applied to determine capacity of power with respect to time and the location of the urea suction pipe in urea storage tank. The study includes the change of liquid volume fraction, temperature profiles and a influence of natural convection by using the commercial software STAR-CCM+(v7.06). The accuracy of the numerical analysis is estimated by comparisons with experimental data. After validation, a numerical analysis for freezing urea is conducted with four different heating power. From the results, it was found that relation of velocity of phase interface and amount of melting urea by increasing heating power in a container. There is also a difference in trend between velocity of phase interface and amounts of melting urea because of effect of natural convection.

  • The structure of steady wave system is considered which is admitted by the continuum equations for materials that undergo phase transformations with exothermic chemical reaction. With its theoretical basis in one-dimensional continuum shock structure analysis, the present approach estimates the micro-width of waves associated with phase transformation phenomena, n-heptane is selected as the hydrocarbon fuel for evaporation and condensation analysis while HMX is used for melting and freezing analysis of solid rocket propellant. The estimated thickness of evaporation - condensation front of n-heptane is on the order of $10^{-2}$ micron while the HMX melting - freezing front thickness is estimated at 1 micron.

  • I consider the structure of steady wave system which is admitted by the continuum equations for materials that undergo phase transformations with exothermic chemical reaction. In particular, the dynamic phase front structures between liquid and gas phases, and solid and liquid phases are computationally investigated. Based on the one-dimensional continuum shock structure analysis, the present approach can estimate the nano-width of waves that are present in combustion. For illustration purpose, n-heptane is used in the evaporation and condensation analysis and HMX is used in the melting and freezing analysis of energetic materials of interest. On-going effort includes extension of this idea to include broad range of liquid and solid fuels, such as rocket propellants.

  • Because stone cultural heritages in Korea are mostly situated outdoors without any notable protection, there are severe damages from physical, chemical and biological weathering. And this in turn causes deformation and structural damage. To counteract this problem and increase durability, various kinds of conservation materials are used in the conservation and restoration treatment. However, there are not many practical and technological experiments on this subject. Accordingly this research is for analysis of effect for treatment to make use a resin of the ethyl silicate for the granite in Mt. Nam of Gyeongju. It takes a long time to confirm the test result regarding durability and side effects of the conservatives after treatment. So we built up an artificial environment through freezing and melting test, and evaluated the conservation materials. As a result of this experiment, porosity and absorptivity was increased in accordance with processing of freezing and melting test. But other things such as elastic wave speed, elastic modulus, uniaxial compressive strength and tensile strength was decreased. It will make a plan to form a method of research systematically for mechanism and element of weathering and to elicit a correlation among experiment of artificial weathering and practical natural weathering from next research.

  • In this study, the occurrence circumstances of 3 cases (12 Jan 2006, 11 Jan 2008, 22 Feb 2009) when the freezing rain was observed at more than two observatories in a day with more than three times each observatory, were investigated. Following the advanced study about the same cases, we have tried to find more delicate differences in using the Korea Local Analysis and Prediction System (KLAPS; 5 km reanalysis data) that has the smallest grid scale at current situation. As results, three common characteristics are found: (1) Just before the occurrence of the freezing rain, the wind direction was consistently continuous and the wind speed was constant or gradually increased for at least 3 hr more. (2) Surface air temperature (Relative humidity) was respectively $3.08^{\circ}C$ (28.76%), $0.47^{\circ}C$ (50.07%) and $-3.60^{\circ}C$ (71.07%) 3 hr ago to break out the freezing rain. It means the freezing rain occurs in a wide range of atmospheric environments. However, the closer it got to the occurrence time of the freezing rain, the closer the surface air temperature was to $0^{\circ}C$, and the bigger the humidity of the surface air was. (3) The liquid precipitation formed in the upper atmosphere, met a cold advection bellower than 950 hPa level and suspected to be changed to the super-cooled condition.

  • In the international temperature scale of 1990 (ITS-90), standard platinum resistance thermometer (SPRT) is a defining standard thermometer used in the temperature range from 13.8033 K to $961^{\circ}C$. Uncertainty of SPRT is about several mK and uncertainty of defining fixed points of the ITS-90 which is used for calibrating SPRT is about several tenth of mK. Above $0^{\circ}C$. the defining fixed points are gallium melting point and indium, tin, zinc, aluminium and silver freezing points which are all realized using an electric furnace or a liquid bath. To realize freezing point of tin ($231.928^{\circ}C$) and zinc ($419.527^{\cir}C$), two 3-zone furnaces which have 3 electric heaters were manufactured. Temperature gradient of the constructed furnaces were tested. Uncertainty caused by temperature gradient of furnace and immersion effect of SPRT in the sealed-type freezing point cells were evaluated 0.038 mK for tin freezing point and 0.036 mK for zinc freezing point.
