Evaluation of Freezing Patterns for Sand and Clay by Using X-ray CT (X-ray CT를 통한 사질토와 점성토의 간극수 동결 패턴 분석)

  • This study adopts high resolution 3D X-ray CT imaging technique to visualize and evaluate the internal structure of experimentally frozen soils. Temperature and elastic wave velocity are also measured during the freezing process. The X-ray images of frozen specimens reveal that no changes in internal structure are observed for sand specimen, whereas systematic growth pattern of pore ice is observed within clay specimen. The freezing patterns are then quantified by a set of X-ray images with the aid of two-point correlation method by computing characteristic length Lr. The results reveal that characteristic length for pore ice freezing pattern in clay linearly increases with respect to the distance from the cooling source, so that Lr at the bottom layer is 2.5 times greater than the top layer when freezing process is completed. Furthermore, during the freezing process, local temperature differences are not observed in sand, but observed in clay specimen due to its relatively low thermal conductivity.

  • The freezing point$(t_f)$, latent heat of freezing$({\triangle}\;H_f)$ and kinetic constant of fleering$(k_f)$ were determined from DSC thermogram at cooling rate $-2.5^{\circ}C/min{\sim}-10.0^{\circ}C/min$. The freezing point of various starches was decreased with an increase in cooling rate, and that of whole starches were lower than defatted starches. Changes of the latent heat of freezing was not observed at above cooling rate $-2.5^{\circ}C/min$. The latent heat of freezing$({\triangle}\;H_f)$ could be deduced as a function of water content(W) as follows: ${\triangle}\;H_f=0.700W-13.048$, (Kcal/kg) $(35%{\leqq}W{\leqq}70%)\;{\triangle}\;H_f=1.569W-73.861,\;(Kcal/kg)\;(W{\geqq}70%$) In the water content range $35{\sim}90$(wt %), the activation energy of various starches in freezing process was determined $126{\sim}270$ Kcal/mol.

  • From the hourly data of 75 Korean weather stations over a 12-year period (2001~2012), this study has chosen three cases (January 12, 2006; January 11, 2008; and February 22, 2009) of multiple freezing rains and investigated the atmospheric circulations that seemed to cause the events. As a result, the receding high pressure type (2006), prevailing high pressure type (2008), and warm front type (2009) are confirmed as synoptic patterns. In all three cases, freezing rain was found in regions with a strong ascending current near the end point of a low-level jet that carried the warm humid air from low latitudes. The strong ascending current resulted from lower-level convergence and upper-level divergence. In 2006 and 2009, the melting process was confirmed. In 2008, the supercooled warm rain process (SWRP) was confirmed. In contrast to existing SWRP theory, it was found that the cool air produced at the middle atmosphere and near the earth's surface led to the formation of freezing rain. The sources of this cool air were supposed to be the evaporative latent heat and the cold advection coming from the northeast. On the other hand, a special case was detected, in which the freezing rain occurred when both the soil surface temperature and surface air temperature were above $0^{\circ}C$. The thickness distributions related to freezing rain in Korea were found to be similar to those in North America. A P-type nomogram was considered for freezing rain forecasting; however, it was not relevant enough to Korea, and few modifications were needed.

  • On heating and fleering food-stuffs, it is very important to obtain informations about thermophysical properties of fishes for designing of freezing and heating equipment and analyzing of physico-chemical reaction during storage. It is particularly necessary to measure denaturation enthalpy, temperature, latent heat of freezing, activation energy, enthalpy, entropy and free energy on freezing and heating rate. In this study, DSC was used to study effects of freezing and heating rate on thermophysical properties and denaturation temperature on scanning rate $2.5-10.0^{\circ}C/min$. On increasing scanning rate, denaturation temperature of protein and lipid incresed and freezing point, activation energy, enthalpy, entropy were decreased. In freezing process free energy of fishes were found to be $14.2-18.9 kcal/mol$.

  • Recently, frost damage of storage tank for admixture agent caused by low temperature in winter and quality deterioration of admixture agent ofen happened. But, many problems are caused because of no applicable regulations of admixture agent facility and so on. Therefore, this study presents the reference data about using and quality control of admixture agent in practice and the judgement data about working out a counter plan of suitable heat insulation of injecion equipment of admixture agent exposed at outside in winter by measuring the freezing point of admixture agent for concrete.

  • To analyze the freezing phenomena of foodstuffs, the numerical freezing model with 3 steps was established. When water and 2% agar gel were used as samples, Neumann's solution was well matched with experimental results by the numerical model. However, in the case of 20% gelatin gel and pork meat, Weiner's solution was better than Neumann's solution. This numerical freezing model was proved to be good model to describe the freezing phenomena with phase change in the point of versatility and precision.

  • This paper presents the results of an investigation into the effect of cyclic freezing-thawing on the compressive strength characteristics of decomposed granite soils. A plane strain compression (PSC) tests were performed on a series of test specimens with different freezing-thawing cycles and fine contents to investigate the change in compressive strength under the process of freezing-thawing cycles. Also performed were scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests to investigate the change in structural rearrangement from a micro-scale point of view. The test results showed that the soil particles tend to conglomerate when subject to cycles of freezing and thawing, and that the soil with less fines exhibited decreased shear strength due to the cyclic freezing-thawing while the soils with a larger fine content showed the opposite trend.

  • For a long-term preservation of silkworm stocks by frozen gonad storage, fundamental topics such as freezing rate and transplanting stage of the gonad, proper cryoprotectant, and super-cooling temperature and freezing point of the freezing medium were examined and following results were obtained. Proper method to anesthetize the ovary-recipient silkworm was to dip the animal to cold water for 10 minutes, and the ovary taken from the 4th instar larvae was more suitable for freezing-preservation than that from the 5th. Concerning the cryoprotectant, glycerol and DMSO were effective to prevent cryoinjury of the ovary, but sorbitol was not. The supercooling temperature and freezing point of the medium to freeze the ovary and testes were checked, and consulting with the results desirable cooling rate was confirmed. On the desirable conditions of transplanting methods, freezing rate and cryoprotectant concentration ect., the next generation was obtained when the females implanted frozen-thawed ovaries mated with normal males, but none of the normal females mated with the males implanted frozen-thawed testes laid fertilized eggs. Now it is needed to improve the connecting ration of the ducts associated with the transplanted testis to those of the hosts.

  • A Co-C eutectic cell for thermocouple calibration was manufactured and tested to investigate its phase transition characteristics using Type B thermocouples. It was observed that the freezing plateaus were flatter than those of melting, but the melting points were closer to the true transition temperature than the freezing points. The expanded uncertainty of melting temperature was calculated not to exceed $0.2^{\circ}C$ (k = 2). Based on the observed results, the melting process is recommended for the calibration of thermocouples.

Change of the thermoelectric voltage of type R thermocouples in the freezing points of aluminum and silver cells with the heat treatment methods (R형 열전대의 열처리 방법에 따른 알루미늄과 은 응고점에서의 기전력 변화)

  • In order to investigate the effects of heat treatment on the thermoelectric motive force (EMF) of type R thermocouples, the changes of EMF in the freezing points of aluminum and silver cells were measured with the immersion depth of themocouples. With the variation of heat treatment methods before use, it was found that the EMF values were different from each other, maximum $17.1{\mu}V$ at $660.323^{\circ}C$ and $18.1{\mu}V$ at $961.78^{\circ}C$. Additionally a thermocouple, which was not heat-treated fully, showed an EMF difference with the immersion depth even though it was located on the region maintained at the constant temperature. The measured differences were about maximum $7.8{\mu}V$ at the Al freezing point and $18.9{\mu}V$ at the Ag freezing point. It was recongnized that a thermocouple for the precise temperature measurement should be heat-treated carefully before service. In this report, the proper heat treatment methods for the type R thermocouple were given on the basis of the obtained experimental results.
