  • Repair materials which applied to the concrete structures may have different quality characteristics depending on the environmental factors. Evaluation on durability of domestic repair materials have not yet secured enough quality performance on durability, mainly due to the lack of test methods resulted from various environmental factors. In this study, we carried out the tests on freezing and thawing resistance of domestic repair materials with different environmental factors applied under BS EN 13687, and analyzed the results by comparing with Korea's national test standards(KS F 4716). The results indicate that after the repetition of dry and wet conditions and the test on freezing and thawing with salt immersion resistance bond strength might show great difference depending on the type of repair materials and the size of sample. For securing better quality performance of repair materials, it is required to establish various standards on the test methods of freezing and thawing resistance with different environmental factors applied.

  • The present study explored the rapid effect of low temperature on the freezing resistance of dehardening twigs of three apple cultivars and sweet cherry. The effect of low temperature was depending upon the thawing treatment following to the low temperature treatment. When the freezing temperature to $-9^{\circ}C$ for three hours followed by thawing treatment ($5^{\circ}C$) was given repeatedly twice, the low temperature increased apparently the cold hardiness of apple and cherry by 3 to $9^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, when the freezing temperature ($-9^{\circ}C$) for ten hours was pretreated without thawing, the low temperature appeared not affecting the cold resistance of the twigs. The role of freezing-thawing temperature cycle in nature was discussed as a signal of environmental stimulus to which dehardening plant may be responding to increase their cold hardiness so as to adapt against the damage of late frost in early spring.

  • This study is to investigate for the frost resistance of high-flowing concrete using finely ground granulated blast-furnace slag with experimental parameters, such as type of binder, type of superplasticizer and method of curing. The resistance to freezing and thawing of high-flowing concrete by type of binder and superplasticizer is presented differently. Though the frost resistance of high-flowing concrete is satisfactory under standard condition, it is required that high-flowing concrete has entrained air like plain concrete. Because the critical spacing factor, being capacity of frost resistance, of high-flowing concrete is longer that of plain concrete, the frost resistance of high-flowing concrete, using finely ground granulated furnace blast slag, is superior to that of plain concrete.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the freezing and thawing resistance of the existing drainage system for leakage treatment of underground concrete structures operating in cold regions. The freezing and thawing test was conducted on 4 types of drainage system specimens to evaluate the freezing and thawing resistance of the drainage system. The freezing and thawing resistance was evaluated on 4 types of Hotty-gel, as a waterproofing material, connection methods and on two methods to fix the drainage board with Hotty-gel on the surface of cement concrete specimen. One cycle of the freeze-thaw testing was 48 hours (24 hours of freezing and 24 hours of thawing), and the temperatures of freezing and thawing were at $-18^{\circ}C$ and $10^{\circ}C$, respectively. Among the 4 types of Hotty-gel connection methods, leakage occurred after 28 cycles (8 weeks) of freeze-thawing only in the Hotty-gel connection method with the 'V' groove applied to the corner of the drainage board. No leakage occurred in the 3 types of Hotty-gel connection methods. In two fixing methods, leakage occurred in the method of fixing the drainage board on the cement concrete specimen using the washer, screw and plastic wall plug. Leakage occurred at one point after 10 cycles (3 weeks) of freezing and thawing. After 28 cycles (8 weeks) of freezing and thawing, leakage point increased to 5 points. As time passed, the leak point was not increased, but the amount of leakage was increased at each leak point. The Hotty-gel connection method with cross-sectional diagonal shape was evaluated to be the highest in the production efficiency considering the production time and manufacturing method of the Hotty-gel connection shape. In the construction efficiency considering the construction time and construction method, the fixing method of air nailer, fixed nail and washer was superior to that of the washer, screw and plastic wall plug.

  • RC(Reinforced Concrete) structures are exposed to various exterior conditions, and the performances of both chloride resistance and freezing/thawing action are evaluated for those exposed to corrosive environment-sea shore. Recently developed FRP Hybrid Bars which is coated with glass fiber and epoxy with core steel has an engineering advantage of higher Elasticity than FRP rod. In this work, corrosion resistance, weight loss, and bond strength are evaluated for the FRP Hybrid Bar tested through freezing/thawing action for 300cycles. The double coated FRP Hybrid Bar shows the least weight loss without defection due to freezing/thawing action. Bond strength in FRP Hybrid Bar increases to 120% of normal steel through torturity effect with Si-coating. Bond strength in normal steel shows 0.86~0.89times in 3-day corrosion acceleration and 0.35~0.38times in 5-day corrosion acceleration, however, that in FRP Hybrid Bar shows little changes in bond strength before and after freezing/thawing action.

  • This study was conducted to assess the durability of Chloride-inhibiting Low-Heat Cement while being subjected to freezing-thawing during winter seasons. Although durability varies slightly depending on the conditions of the jobsite, frost damage to concrete resulting from repeated freezing and thawing over the course of seasonal changes is the leading cause behind lowered concrete durability. in addition, concrete that has been subjected to freezing and thawing during the winter season develops a significant amount of expansive force at the core and begins to exhibit signs of damage, such as cracking, peeling, and detachment from the aggregate. Therefore, this study fabricated test specimens using a Chloride-inhibiting Low-Heat Cement(CLC) and the widely used blast furnace slag cement(BFS) and Ordinary Portland Cement(OPC) with water-to-cement ratios of 35%, 40% and 45%, respectively, to assess the durability index of the CLC as per resistance to freezing-thawing. The specimens were then tested using the KS F 2456 method (Testing method for resistance of concrete to rapid freezing and thawing) to measure the dynamic modulus of elasticity. The dynamic modulus of elasticity measurements were then used to derive the durability indices. By comparing the durability indices, it was confirmed that CLC, BFS, and OPC all had superior durability.

  • This study was performed to change the latex content for properties of freezing-thawing resistance. When styrene-butadiene latex is added to portland cement, aggregate and water, a concrete with the color, consistency and workability of ordinary conventional concrete results, but with 20% to 35% less water. When cured, the concrete consists of hydrated cement and aggregate interconnected by a film of latex particles. In general, increasing the amount of latex will produce concrete with increased tensile and flexural strength and lower modulus of elasticity. Air entrainment has been used in conventional concrete for the past 50 years to impart freeze-thaw resistance. Latex modified concrete does not need additional air entrainment for freeze-thaw resistance provided adequate cure occurs.
