  • Air void systems in hardened concrete has an important influence on concrete durability such as freeze-thaw resistance, water permeability, surface scaling resistance. Linear traverse method and point count method described at ASTM are the routine analysis of the air void system that have been widely used to estimate the spacing factor in hardened concrete. Recently, many concretes often have a spacing factor higher than the generally accepted $200-250{\mu}m$ limit for the usual range of air contents. This study is proposed to estimate the plane spacing factor by calculation of simplicity. The plane spacing factor need two parameters that are air content and numbers of air voids in the hardened concrete. Those obtained from the standard air-void system analysis of the ASTM C 457. The equation is valid for all values of paste-to-air ratio because the estimation of paste content is unnecessary at the using ASTM C 457. The plane spacing factor yields a similar estimate of the standard spacing factor.

  • Recently, very-early strength latex-modified concrete(below ; VES-LMC) has been developed for repairing and overlaying the old concrete bridge deck. VES-LMC provides the advantage of very-early-strength, as well as high flexural strength, bond strength, durability, resistance to corrosion, reduced water permeability and resistance to damage from freeze-thaw cycles. The compressive and flexural strength of VES-LMC are 21 MPa and 4.5 MPa at 3 hours after concrete placing, respectively. However, VES-LMC would have a relatively large shrinkage at early-age because of reduced water-cement ratio, big water self-dissipation, and rapid hydration reaction. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the early-age and restrained shrinkage of VES-LMC, having an experimental variables such as latex contents and cement types. The latex contents included 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%, and the cement types included ordinary portland cement and very-early strength cement.

  • Geopolymers are an important alternative material supporting recycling, sustainability, and waste management. Durability properties are among the most critical parameters to be investigated; in this study, the durability of manufactured geopolymer samples under the attack of 10% magnesium sulfate and 10% sodium sulfate solution was investigated. 180 cycles of freezing and thawing were also tested. The experimentally obtained results investigate the durability of geopolymer mortar prepared with fly ash (class F) and alkali activator. Three different quarry dust wastes replaced the river sand aggregate: limestone, marble, and basalt powder as fine filler aggregate in three different replacement ratios of 25%, 50%, and 75% to produce ten series of geopolymer composites. The geopolymer samples' visual appearance, weight changes, UPV, and strength properties were studied for up to 12 months at different time intervals of exposure to sulfate solutions to investigate sulfate resistance. In addition, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), EDS, and XRD were used to study the microstructure of the samples. It was beneficial to include quarry waste as a filler aggregate in durability and mechanical properties. The compact matrix was demonstrated by microstructural analysis of the manufactured specimens. The geopolymer mortars immersed in sodium sulfate showed less strength reduction and deterioration than magnesium sulfate, indicating that magnesium sulfate is more aggressive than sodium sulfate. Therefore, it is concluded that using waste dust interrogation with partial replacement of river sand with fly ash-based geopolymers has satisfactory results in terms of durability properties of freeze-thaw and sulfate resistance.

  • In recent years, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) has been widely used for repairing and/or strengthening structural elements in concrete. Not enough test data, however, are available to predict the long-term performance of the repaired and improved structures exposed to weathering. The objective of this research is to study the effect of freeze-thaw cycling on the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened in shear with carbon fiber sheet. Six small-scale RC beams (100mm${\times]$100mm${\times]$400mm) were strengthened with CFRP in shear, subjected to up to 400 cycles freeze-thawing from -17${\sim}4^{\circ}C$, and tested to failure in four-point bending. Test result, there was no significant damage to carbon fiber sheet strengthened concrete beams had been suffered 30 cycles of freeze-thawing, and more over 60 cycles of freezing-thawing brought about a reduction in resistance of only 25% of the initial level.

  • PURPOSES : Infiltration of moisture, polluted material, and deicer into concrete, accompanied by freeze and thaw can cause significant deterioration of concrete pavement. In order to protect concrete from deterioration, it is necessary to prevent the infiltration of these concrete external materials. The moisture-repellent agent, which is a surface treatment and maintenance material added to concrete structures to render them water resistant, has advantages such as prevention of water infiltration and security against air permeation. Nano-coat, which is referred to as silicon hydride, is typically used as a moisture-repellent agent. Therefore, in this study, an attempt is made to use penetration-type Nano-coat as an alternative in order to evaluate its applicability through environmental resistance tests. METHODS : This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of penetration-type Nano-coat, which can provide water repellency to concrete, in concrete pavements, through various environmental resistance tests such as freezing and thawing resistance, chloride ion penetration resistance, and surface scaling resistance tests. The applicability of penetration-type Nano-coat was demonstrated based on the specification of KS F 2711, KS F 2456, and ASTM C 672. RESULTS :In the case of penetration-type Nano-coat applied on sound concrete, an increase in concrete durability was demonstrated by the negligible chloride ion penetrability and the absence of scaling, as revealed by visual observation of the surface, after 50 cycles of scaling resistance test. In addition, test result of the application of penetration-type Nano-coat on deteriorated concrete established that concrete surface pretreated by grinding provided improved durability than non-treated concrete. CONCLUSIONS :This study indicates that penetration-type Nano-coat is applicable as an effective alternative, to increase the durability of concrete structures. In addition, it was known that pretreatment of deteriorated concrete surface, such as grinding, is required to improve the long-term performance of concrete pavement.

  • This study compares the quartzites of four quartzite units: The Fagfog Quartzite, Dunga Quartzite (member of the Robang Formation), Pandrang Quartzite (member of the Kalitar Formation) and the Chisapani Quartzite. The analysis shows variations in flakiness and elongation, as the Fagfog Quartzite displays low flakiness whereas the Pandrang and the Chisapani have moderate and the Dunga Quartzite has shown variations. The density values of the four quartzite units remain consistent, indicating uniform physical properties and porosity levels. However, bulk density values differ among the quartzites, suggesting variations in particle arrangement, porosity, and density. Regarding strength measures, the Pandrang and the Chisapani Quartzite have higher strength characteristics as compared to the Fagfog and the Dunga Quartzites. The Pandrang Quartzite has the highest average point load strength index, classifying it as "Extremely Strong". The resistance to impact and crushing forces varies among the quartzites, with lower Aggregate Impact Value (AIV) and Aggregate Crushing Value (ACV) indicating higher strength and durability. Durability tests show that the Fagfog Quartzite has high durability against slaking, with a slight decrease observed after the fifth cycle. The Dunga Quartzite shows varying degrees of weathering, while the Pandrang and the Chisapani Quartzite have minimal weight changes, indicating strong resistance to weathering. Magnesium sulfate soundness tests indicate high durability and resistance to degradation for all four units. The Los Angeles abrasion value (LAAV) tests indicate favorable resistance to abrasion for the majority of the Fagfog, Dunga, and the Pandrang Quartzites samples, while Chisapani Quartzite shows more variability in LAAV values. The Pandrang Quartzite shows a higher proportion of elongated particles but lower flakiness index values as compared to Fagfog and Dunga Quartzites while Chisapani Quartzite stands out with a significantly higher presence of flaky particles and lower elongation index values. Mechanically, the Fagfog and Dunga Quartzite show higher strength and better resistance to abrasion and freeze and thaw. The Pandrang Quartzite shows moderate resistance to crushing and sudden effect, while the Chisapani Quartzite has variable resistance to effect. This comparative study emphasizes the diversity and complexity of quartzite rock types, showing the need for comprehensive characterization and assessment to determine their suitability for specific applications.

  • In this paper an experimental program was launched to determine the mechanical and durability properties of spall repair materials (RCC: 3 items, PCC: 2 items, PC: 3 items). Test items were mechanical property tests such as setting times, strengths, modulus of elasticity, plastic shrinkage, and durability tests such as dynamic modulus ratio, bond property with freeze-thaw, water absorption, chemical resistance, ultraviolet exposure. Modulus of the PC products exhibits ductile while the modulus is in the order of RCC > PCC > PC. At early ages the PC products experience higher plastic shrinkage than others, henceforth stable at 28 days. Other test results such as dynamic modulus ratio, absorption, and chemical resistance show that the PCs are superior to the PCCs and the RCCs. Except for PC-2, all patch materials had bond strength more than 1.3MPa after freeze-thaw cycles of 200~300 while the PCs and the PCCs seem to be better than the RCCs. With 500 hours of ultraviolet exposure, all patch materials showed to have no crack or deterioration at the surface.

  • This study was attempted in order to investigate the effects of superplasticizers on fresh and hardened concrete. The experimental program included tests on the slump and slump loss, bleeding, time of set, air content, the compacting, factor Vee Dee, compressive strength, tensile and flexural strength, permeability, shrinkage and freege-thaw durability. The major conclusions that can be drawn on the study are as follows. 1. Superplasticizers were observed to have an appreciable fluidifying action in fresh concrete so that tinder appropriate conditions, they either considerably improved its workability or permitted a water reduction of at least 8-12% to be made while maintaining normal workability. 2. The bleeding ratios of base and S,P. Concrete were much lower than those of the conventional concrete. Differences between the base and S.P. Concrete were insignifician. 3. The setting time was the longest for conventionla concrete, followed by S.P. concrete and base concrete in thatorder. And AE water reduction admixtures showed an appreciable influence on the setting and hardening characteristics of concrete and prolonged the stiffening times. 4. The high initial slump values of S.P. concrete generally decreased rapidly with increased standing time. CF values showed increasing tendencies with the increase of S.P. content, and excessive addition of S.P. caused the segregation of fresh concrete, resulting in its rejection. 5. Though there was a slight increase in strength, no significant differences are observed between base and S.P. concrete in terms of the compressive, tensile and flexural strength. 6. The permeability of S.P. concrete was significantly less than that of the conventional concrete, and the shrinkage of S.P. concrete was considerably smaller than that of the conventional concrete, but there were no significant differences between base and S.P. concrete. 7. Compared to base concrete, S.P. concrete without entrained air tended to slightly increase freeze-thaw durability, and S.P. concrete with an appropriate entrained air gave satisfactory resistance to freezing and thawing.

  • When microorganism is injected into porous medium such as soils along with appropriate substrate and nutrients, biomass retained in the soil pore. Soil pore size and shape are varied from the initial condition as a result of biofilm formation, which make hydraulic conductivity reduced. In this research, hydraulic conductivity reduction was measured after microorganism are inoculated and cultured with synthetic substrates and nutrients. Biomass-soil mixture was evaluated its applicability to the field condition as an alternative liner material in landfill by measuring hydraulic conductivity change after repetitive freeze-thaw cycles. Resistance of biofilm to chemical solution and degree of biodegradation were measured through column test.

  • This study dealt with the properties for fly ash of conbined heat power plant and application for concrete industry. For this purpose, fly ash sampled Ulsan conbined heat power plant and analyzed for physical and chemical properties. As analyzed results of fly ash, contents of $SiO_ and Al_O_ $in the fly ash of Ulsan were less than those of Thermo-electric power plant(Boryuing), but contents of CaO were tem times as much as those of Boryung, because of these differences, it is expected that pozzolanic activity of concrete using fly ash of Ulsan will be different from another fly ash. Concrete specimens were tested to evaluate concrete preformance when 10 to 50 percent of the portland cement by weight in the concrete mix was replaced with fly ash of conbined heat power plant. As test results, workability and consideration in the fresh concrete were increased and concrete strength was showed more than 400kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for the required age. This study would be provided valuable data for the practical utilization of fly ash(conbined heat power plant). In the future, properties of fly ash concrete including long term strength, elapsed time, pozzolanic activity, modulus of elasticity, sulfate resistance, shrinkage, freeze-thaw durability and so on will be studied.
