  • Biological deinking process of used papers was studied by the polymer modified cellulase. Cellulase was modified with copolymers which consist of polyoxyethylene derivative and maleic anhydride(MA). The MA functional groups of copolymer can react with amino acids groups of the cellulase without much loss of activity. Modified degree of amino acids was controlled by the added copolymer. The maximum modified degree was about 60% and it was obtained when the weight ratio of copolymer and cellulase was 4. The remained activity of the maximum modified cellulase(MMC) was higher than 80% of native cellulase. The MMC's concentration was 0.05-2.0 wt% relative to the dry paper. In mechanical pulping process, cellulase enhanced the detachment of the ink particle from the used paper by partial hydrolysis of the fiber. The polyoxyethylene of modified cellulase produced the forms which can float the separated ink particle. Compared to the convention deinking method with NaOH or organic chemicals, the new biological deinnking process improved the physical properties such as freeness, tearing strength and whiteness.

  • Presence of small amount of old newsprints printed with waterbased flexographic inks leads to a significant loss brightness of the deinked pulp by flotation process. Recently there has been an increased interest in employing neutral deinking processes to solve the problems associated with waterbased flexo ink. A comparative experimental study was performed to evaluate the efficiency of neutral deinking and conventional alkaline deinking for ONP furnishes contaminated with flexo ink. It was shown that neutral deinking provides significant improvements in brightness, yield and freeness as compared with alkaline deinking. Flotation efficiency was different depending upon the type of surfactants used in neutral deinking. The result of this study showed that alcohol type surfactant is superior to fatty acid type surfactant in neutral deinking efficiency.

  • Fractionation effects of the slot-type and the hole-type screens of mutifractors were studied using a pilot multifractor. We used a slot screen of 0.15 mm, and two hole screens of 1.0 and 2.0 mm, respectively, in the study. We found hole-type screens were more effective for fractionation of fiber furnishes according to their fiber lengths. Slot-type screen was more effective to remove the shives from the accepted fiber furnishes. There existed a high regression coefficient between the fiber length differences and the freeness differences of the accepted and the rejected fiber furnishes.

  • Four waste paper mills in Korea, where multifractors, devices for fiber fractionation, were installed, were selected to investigate how effectively and how differently the multifractors were used. They all used slot-type screens. Effective fiber fractionations by fiber length were expected by the multifractors, but in reality, they were used for selecting fiber furnishes that were flexible and hydrated. Flakes, which meant large fiber bundles, were rejected effectively by the multifractors. There existed a high regression coefficient between the fiber length differences and the freeness differences of the accepted and the rejected fiber furnishes.

  • Effect of cationic starches and anionic colloidal silica on retention and drainage characteristics of Compozil system was investigated. Depending upon the degree of substitution and molecular weight of cationic starches and morphological characteristics of anionic colloidal silica, retention and drainage properties of Compozil system were significantly influenced. When cationic starch addition level increased above a certain limit retention and stock freeness were decreased. To elucidate this an electrostatic coagulation mechanism occurring between unadsorbed starch molecules and anionic colloidal silica was proposed. Unstructured colloidal silica showed greater improvement in retention than structured colloidal silica. Cationic corn starches with different degree of substitution and molecular weights were prepared and their effect as a constituent of Compozil system was also evaluated. By controlling the molecular weight and degree of substitution of cationic corn starch it was possible to achieve significant improvement in fines retention. Cationic corn starch with higher degree of substitution maintained its retention efficiency even when the stock conductivity was increased. Turbidity measurement technique was found to be a simple and useful method to measure the retention characteristics.

  • Bastard indigo, prevailing shrub species planted in erosion control work to constitute vegetation, is proved to be usefull for pulp material other than existing usage of green manure or fuel. Pulp made from bastard indigo is good enough for filler pulp though the quality of it is not remarkably excellent. (1) Sorts of paper possible to make from this pulp. Packing paper of medium grade. (general packing paper except heavy packing) (2) Traits of this pulp as for pulp material (A) It is more preferable than annual plants in these respects, ego collection, transport and storage of pulp material, and yield, freeness and chemical consumption of pulp. (B) Annual probable production of pulp material per ha from this plant is higher than that from long-term tree species or similar to that from fast growing species. (C) Its cultivation on eroded area is welcomed and consecutive annual production of material by copice method is also proved possible.

A comparative experimental study was performed to evaluate the efficiency of neutral deinking and conventional alkaline deinking for ONP furnishes contaminated with flexo ink. It was shown that neutral deinking would provide significant improvement in brightness, yield, and freeness as compared with conventional alkaline deinking. There was no increase in brightness when OMG was added in the furnish up to 20 %, and it was attributed to the redeposition of flexo inks on chemical pulp fibers.

  • Three different species of cattails (Typha orientalis, Typha angustata, Typha latifolia) cultivated in South Korea were examined as raw materials for the production of pulp and paper. Soda pulping with anthraquinone was used for the stems and the leaves of cattail, separately. Addition of anthraquinone in soda pulping improved the yield greatly. Chemical components between three cattail species and within each species (leaves and stem) gave little differences. Average fiber length of the bleached cattail fibers was a little shorter than that of the HwBKP of Eucalyptus. Average fiber width of the cattail fibers was a half of that of the HwBKP. Compared to the HwBKP, cattail pulp gave higher breaking length, higher opacity, and better smoothness at equivalent freeness.

  • To investigate the most effective way of cellulase utilization on paper making process and the systematic way of how to combine its components for better use, purified two major cellulase were applied to bleached kraft pulp at various dosage in the refining process and estimated the synergism effect of each components in the characteristics of papermaking fiber. freeness was not changed by $C_1$ Component dosage but strongly increased by Cx Component dosage. Drop in fiber viscosity, increase in WQV, fiber shortening and fine generation was strongly influenced by Cx Component, it seems to be that Cx Component works a hydrogenate that breaks hydrogen bonding in fiber and enhances pooling effect of fiber. $C_1$ Component was little influenced these characteristics of fiber but considered to help to make fiber surface smooth.

  • Tobacco stalks are greatly produced as annual agricultural wastes. These residues are available approximately 70,000 tons per year. This study was performed to evaluate the potentials of tobacco stalks as a new resource for reconstituent tobacco sheet. Tobacco stalk was more lignified than cereal straws, and had similar chemical constituents to hardwood. Pulping yields by cooling at 170$^{\circ}C$ of dry and green tobacco stalks were 56.7% and 66.3% , respectively. Around 50$^{\circ}$SR freeness level of mixed pulp was adjusted by mixing more than 10% chemical pulp9CP) in the case of dry tobacco stalk and more than 15% CP with wet one. By immersing this handsheet in extracted cooking liquors, reconsitutent sheet contained about 0.28% of nicotines could be prepared. This sheet had enough strength properties for cigarette paper making . In conclusion, it was proved that tobacco stalk could be used to produce the reconstituent tobacco sheet.
