  • The present study describes a numerical analysis for simulation of the sloshing of flows with free-surface which contained in a rectangular tank The SOLA-VOF (Volume of fluid) method uses a fixed mesh for calculating the motion of flow and the free-surface. This Eulerian approach enables the VOF method to use only a small amount of computer memory for simulating sloshing problems with complicated free-surface contours. The VOF function, representing the volume fraction of a cell occupied by the fluid, is calculated for each cells, which gives the locating of the free-surface filling any some fraction of cells with fluid. Using SOLA-VOF method, the study describes visualization about simulation of the sloshing of flows and damping effect by baffle. Translation and pitching motion of the forms have been investigated The time-dependent changes of free-surface height are used for visualization subject to several conditions such as fluid height horizontal acceleration, sinusoidal motion, and viscosity. The free-surface heights were used for comparing wall-force, which is caused by sloshing of flows. Baffle was Installed to reduce the force on the wall by sloshing of flows. Damping effects was extensively expressed under the conditions such as baffle shape and position.

  • Experiment of laser propulsion in free flight has never been conducted. At Institute of Fluid Science (IFS), Tohoku University, propulsive impulse generation by focusing on a rest projectile was demonstrated. Based on the ideas obtained from this experiment, experiment of laser propulsion of a projectile in flight by focusing $CO_2$ laser beam is being prepared for. The objective velocity increment in experiment is about 50 m/s.

  • This paper is concerned with the study of spacetimes satisfying div 𝓜 = 0, where "div" denotes the divergence and 𝓜 is the m-projective curvature tensor. We establish that a perfect fluid spacetime with div 𝓜 = 0 is a generalized Robertson-Walker spacetime and vorticity free; whereas a four-dimensional perfect fluid spacetime becomes a Robertson-Walker spacetime. Moreover, we establish that a Ricci recurrent spacetime with div 𝓜 = 0 represents a generalized Robertson-Walker spacetime.

  • It is well known that the height of tank metacenter above the centroid of fluid in a tank is given by i/v where I is the inertia moment of free surface and v is the fluid volume. It is supposed in this formula that the inclination of ship is small and that the free surface of fluid do not touch the top and the bottom of tank. It the inclination of ship is large, the height of tank metacenter may be possibly greater than that given by i/v. The height of tank metacenter is smaller than i/v when the free surface of fluid touch the top or the bottom of tank. The reasonable method to calculate the height of tank metacenter is presented in this paper and prepared in FORTRAN program by FUNCTION EFFRES. The approximate formula was also developed and given by $g_m=(1+\frac{2}{1}tan^2\theta)[1-EXP\{-12(\frac{\alpha(1-\alpha)k}{tan\theta})^{1.25}\}]\frac{i}{v}$ where $g_m$ is the distance from the centroid of fluid to the tank metacenter, $\theta$ is inclined angle of ship, $\alpha$ is the ratio of filled volume to tank capacity and k is the ratio of the depth to the width of tank. The values calculated by the approximate formula given in this paper were compared with the exact values from the computer program and proved out to be sufficiently precise for practical use.

  • With the development of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), studies on shipbuilding and maritime issues including free-surface wave flow have been conducted. Although the volume of fluid (VOF) and level-set methods are widely used to study the free-surface wave flow, disadvantages exist. In particular, it takes a long time to obtain solutions. In this study, a free-surface capturing code is developed for ship and offshore structures. The developed code focuses on accuracy and computation time. Open source CFD libraries, termed OpenFOAM, are used to develop the code. The results obtained using the developed code are compared with those obtained using interFoam. The results show that the developed code could be used to capture the free-surface wave flow without numerical diffusion; moreover, the accuracy of the developed code is largely the same as that of interFoam.

  • This paper describes a volume of fluid(VOF) method, mRHRIC for the simulation of free surface flows around ship hulls and provides its validation against benchmark test cases. The VOF method is developed on the basis of RHRIC method developed by Park et al. that uses high resolution differencing schemes to algebraically preserve both the sharpness of interface and the boundedness of volume fraction. A finite volume method is used to solve the governing equations, while the realizable ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model is used for turbulence closure. The present numerical results of the resistance performance tests for DTMB5415 and KCS hull forms show a good agreement with available experimental data and those of other free surface methods.

  • In this study, the design of UV-free reflecting reactor was studied to enhance the cutting fluid life for cutting machine. And also, the stability of cutting fluid with addition of biocide in cutting fluid and without biocide was compared with respect to the cutting fluid concentration, pH changes and microorganisms. Low number of microorganism was observed in the cutting fluid after UV-free reflecting treatment as compare to the cutting fluid which was added biocide and just cutting fluid alone. PH of the cutting fluid after UV-free reflecting treatment was about 9$\sim$8.5 while others were observed considerably low. The oil contents of cutting fluid which was added biocied and pure cutting fluid were almost degraded with the passage of time. However, in case of UV-free reflecting reactor, 4$\sim$3.5 Brix oil contents were observed in the cutting fluid.

  • This paper presents the vibration characteristics of a cantilever beam in contact with a fluid using a PZT actuator and PVDF film. dynamic behaviors of a flexible beam-water interaction system are examined. The effect of the liquid level on free vibration of the composite beam in a partially liquid-filled circular cylinder is investigated. The coupled system is subject to an undisturbed boundary condition un the fluid domain. In the vibration analysis of a wetted beam. the decoupled analyses between beam and fluid have been conventionally employed by considering first the composite beam vibration in the all and secondly Performing the correction taking account for surrounding fluid effects. That is, this investigation was to look at how natural frequencies, mode shapes. and damping are affected by liquid level variations. The signals from the sensor according to the applied input voltage are digitalized and filtered in order to obtain the dynamic characteristics of the composite beam in contact with fluid. It was found that the coupled natural frequencies decreased with the fluid level for the identical composite beam due to added mass effect. In case of the free-free boundary condition, the natural frequency gently decreased at fluid water level between 20% and 80% in the first tending mode and we found out the bends of stair shape for added mass effect of the fluid.

  • This paper deals with the free vibrations of columns immersed in fluid. The column model is based on the classical Bernoulli-euler theory which neblects the effects of rotatory inerital and shear deformation. The eccentricity and rotatory inertial of the concentrated mass at the top are taken into accuont. In the governing equation for the free vibration of column, thedensity of immersed part was midified to account for theadded fluid mass. The govering differential equations are solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. The lowest four natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes are calculated over a range of non-dimensional system parameters ; the mas density ration of fluid to column, the ratio of fluid depth to span length, the ratio of tip mass to total column mass, the dimensionless mass moment of inertia, and the eccentricity.
