Behaviors of LAS in Reactions with Free Chlorine (鹽素와 反應에서 LAS의 擧動에 관한 연구)

  • When surfactants meet chlorine bleaches not only in the washing drums but also through the whole path from the stream to the river, it is not difficult to expect that they produce the harmful substances like DBPs. Furthermore considering wastewater that is contaminated by surfactants is used to discharge into drinking water sources via sewer system, it also can be imagined that residual surfactants would contribute to the some extent of DBPs' formation during chlorine disinfection in water treatment plants. Although the main behavior observed was the formation of chloroform during the reaction of LAS with free chlorine, the other manifest behaviors like the trends of pH, MBAS, free chlorine, the mole concentration of benzene ring and etc. were also investigated.

Pier Scour Prediction in Pressure Flow

  • In this experimental paper, the maximum scour depth at pier was student. The model of the pier of San Gye bridge in the Bocheong stream was set for the experimental studies. Several model verification processes were conducted through the roughness comparisons between model and prototype, pursuing scour depth variations with time depending upon channel bed variation, the comparison of the ratios between falling velocities and shear velocities in the model and prototype, and the comparison of pier scour depths between experimental data and field measuring data. The experiments were conducted in the free flow conditions and pressure flow conditions. The maximum scour depth at piers in the pressure flow conditions is almost twice as much as compared to the free flow conditions. Also, the maximum scour depth variations are indicated in the figures based on the Froude numbers, opening ratios, water depths and approaching angles in the free surface flow conditions.

  • Based on the flow characteristics around a piercing cylinder, a free surface-flow velocitmetry which can be used in extremely harsh environment such as molten steel flow was developed. The velocimetry is consisted of finite length cylinder, load detecting elastic plate, electric signal transducer and data acquisition H/W and S/W. Using such a velocimetry, two velocity measurement schemes were established which one is flow resistance detecting scheme and the other is Karman Vortex frequency detecting scheme. For calibration of each scheme, realistic flow water model was used and in followings, detailed calibration processes were explained.

  • In this study, the assumed mode method using characteristic polynomials of Timoshenko beam is applied to the free vibration analysis for the stiffened plate of ship tank side in contact with water. The hydro-elastic effect of the fluid-structure interaction is considered by fluid velocity potential, derived from boundary conditions for fluid and structure, and utilized in the calculation of added mass matrix using assumed modes. To verify the validity and effectiveness of the presented method, free vibration analysis for the stiffened plates in contact with finite and infinite fluids have been carried out and its results were compared with those obtained by a general purpose FEA software.

  • The states of alkali occuring in Portland cement clinker were studied. Potassium was added to raw mixture by there kinds ; $K_2SO_4$, $K_2CO_3$ and KOH. In case of $K_2CO_3$ and KOH addition the new state of unstable alkali was found when alkakli content is high and $SO_3$ content is low in the clinker. Unstable state of highly basic free 4K_2O$ causes lowering burnability much more than alkali sulfate especially at the early stage of burning. Lowered burnability by 4K_2O$ became more serious with higher LSF. Unstable free-4K_2O$ which is readily soluble with water reacts with gypsum to form $Ca(OH)_2$ and syngenite as soon as water is added. As a results the liberation rate of heat of hydration at the early hydration process(1st peak) was increased.

Properties of Urea-Formaldehyde Resin Adhesives with Different Formaldehyde to Urea Mole Ratios

  • As a part of abating the formaldehyde emission of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin adhesive by lowering formaldehyde to urea (F/U) mole ratio, this study was conducted to investigate properties of UF resin adhesive with different F/U mole ratios. UF resin adhesives were synthesized at different F/U mole ratios of 1.6, 1.4, 1.2, and 1.0. Properties of UF resin adhesives measured were non-volatile solids content, pH level, viscosity, water tolerance, specific gravity, gel time and free formaldehyde content. In addition, a linear relationship between non-volatile solids content and sucrose concentration measured by a refractometer was established for a faster determination of the non-volatile solids content of UF resin. As F/U mole ratio was lowered, non-volatile solids content, pH, specific gravity, water tolerance, and gel time increased while free formaldehyde content and viscosity were decreased. These results suggested that the amount of free formaldehyde strongly affected the reactivity of UF resin. Lowering F/U mole ratio of UF resin as a way of abating formaldehyde emission consequently requires improving its reactivity.

  • This paper presents the vibration characteristics of an intelligent cantilever beam in contact with a fluid using a PZT actuator and PVDF film. The dynamic behaviors of a flexible beam-water interaction system are examined. The effect of the liquid level on free vibration of the composite beam in a partially liquid-filled circular cylinder is investigated. The coupled system is subject to an undisturbed boundary condition in the fluid domain. It was found that the coupled natural frequencies decreased with the fluid level for the identical composite beam due to added mass effect.   • The steel slag, a by-product which is produced during the manufacture of steel by refining pig iron, is mainly used as road materials after aging it. It is necessary to age steel slag for long time in air because the reaction with water and free-CaO in steel slag could make the expansion of volume. This problem prevents steel slag from being used as aggregate for concrete. But steel slag used in this study was controled by an air-jet method which rapidly cools substance melted at a high temperature. Rapid cooling prevents from generation of free-CaO in steel slag. In this study, properties of steel slag manufactured by air-jet method and mortar used it were investigated. As results of this study, free-CaO contents were controled under 1%. Mortar used this steel slag demanded to lower water contents, higher compressive strength and lower drying shrinkage than the basic mortar in the same condition.

Computation of Water and Air Flow with Submerged Hydrofoil by Interface Capturing Method

  • Free-surface flows with an arbitrary deformation, induced by a submerged hydrofoil, are simulated numerically, considering two-fluid flows of both water and air. The computation is performed by a finite volume method using unstructured meshes and an interface capturing scheme to determine the shape of the free surface. The method uses control volumes with an arbitrary number of faces and allows cell wise local mesh refinement. The integration in space is of second order, based on midpoint rule integration and linear interpolation. The method is fully implicit and uses quadratic interpolation in time through three time levels. The linear equations are solved by conjugate gradient type solvers, and the non-linearity of equations is accounted for through Picard iterations. The solution method is of pressure-correction type and solves sequentially the linearized momentum equations, the continuity equation, the conservation equation of one species, and the equations for two turbulence quantities. Finally, a comparison is quantitatively made at the same speed between the computation and experiment in which the grid sensitivity is numerically checked.
