An improved shear deformable thin-walled curved beam theory to overcome the drawback of currently available beam theories is newly proposed for the spatially coupled free vibration and elastic analysis. For this, the displacement field considering the shear deformation effects is presented by introducing displacement parameters defined at the centroid and shear center axes. Next the elastic strain and kinetic energies considering the shear effects due to the shear forces and the restrained warping torsion are rigorously derived. Then the equilibrium equations are consistently derived for curved beams with non-symmetric thin-walled sections. It should be noticed that this formulation can be easily reduced to the warping-free beam theory by simply putting the sectional properties associated with warping to zero for curved beams with L- or T-shaped sections. Finally in order to illustrate the validity and the accuracy of this study, finite element solutions using the isoparametric curved beam elements are presented and compared with those in available references and ABAQUS's shell elements.
Differential transform method (DTM) for free vibration analysis of both ends simply supported beam resting on elastic foundation is suggested. The fourth order partial differential equation for free vibration of the beam resting on elastic foundation subjected to bending moment, shear and axial compressive load is obtained by using Winkler hypothesis and small displacement theory. It is assumed that the material is linear-elastic, and that axial load and modulus of subgrade reaction to be constant. In the analysis, shear and axial load effects are considered. The frequency factors of the beam are calculated by using DTM due to the values of relative stiffness; the results are presented in graphs and tables.
A study on the free vibration analysis of elastic bar is described in this paper. In order to determine the natural frequencies of bars, a bar element is developed by using isogeometric formulation. The B-spline is introduced to represent the geometry of bar and the same geometric definition is also used to define its unknown displacement field in isogeometric formulation. Therefore, the stiffness and mass matrices are derived by the order-free B-spline basis function. The efficiency and accuracy of the present isogeometric bar elementis demonstrated by using several numerical tests. From numerical results, it is found to be that the present isogeometric element produces very accurate natural frequencies of bars. Finally, the present isogeometric solutions are provided as future reference solutions.
A three-dimensional (3-D) method of analysis is presented for determining the free vibration frequencies of hyperboloidal shells free at the top edge and clamped at the bottom edge like a hyperboloidal cooling tower by the Ritz method based upon the circular cylindrical coordinate system instead of related 3-D shell coordinates which are normal and tangent to the shell midsurface. The Legendre polynomials are used as admissible displacements. Convergence to four-digit exactitude is demonstrated. Natural frequencies from the present 3-D analysis are also compared with those of straight beams with circular cross section, complete (not truncated) conical shells, and circular cylindrical shells as special cases of hyperboloidal shells from the classical beam theory, 2-D thin shell theory, and other 3-D methods.
The literature regarding the free vibration analysis of Bernoulli-Euler and Timoshenko beams on elastic soil is plenty, but the free vibration analysis of Reddy-Bickford beams on elastic soil with/without axial force effect using the Differential Transform Method (DTM) has not been investigated by any of the studies in open literature so far. In this study, the free vibration analysis of axially loaded Reddy-Bickford beam on elastic soil is carried out by using DTM. The model has six degrees of freedom at the two ends, one transverse displacement and two rotations, and the end forces are a shear force and two end moments in this study. The governing differential equations of motion of the rectangular beam in free vibration are derived using Hamilton's principle and considering rotatory inertia. Parameters for the relative stiffness, stiffness ratio and nondimensionalized multiplication factor for the axial compressive force are incorporated into the equations of motion in order to investigate their effects on the natural frequencies. At first, the terms are found directly from the analytical solutions of the differential equations that describe the deformations of the cross-section according to the high-order theory. After the analytical solution, an efficient and easy mathematical technique called DTM is used to solve the governing differential equations of the motion. The calculated natural frequencies of one end fixed and the other end simply supported Reddy-Bickford beam on elastic soil using DTM are tabulated in several tables and figures and are compared with the results of the analytical solution where a very good agreement is observed and the mode shapes are presented in graphs.
Blast-vibration tests were carried out to determine the effects of the number of free face on the level of blast vibration. Frequency chatacteristics were also examined by using FFT analysis. To check the effects of the number of free face, charge weight per delay, drilling length, burden and space were applied uniformly and the number of free face was only changed from one to four. The results from tests were checked by regression analysis and K-value.
It is very important to analyze the torsional vibration for the propulsion shafting of ship. The authors have developed the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM) as a vibration analysis algorithm. The concept of the TSCM is based on the successive transfer of stiffness coefficient. The effectiveness of the TSCM was verified through many applications. In this paper, the TSCM is applied to the torsional free vibration analysis for the propulsion shafting of an actual shin with a diesel engine. In order to calculate the additional torsional stresses of the propulsion shafting the torsional forced vibration for the shafting is analyzed by using both the modal analysis method and the results of the torsional free vibration analysis by the TSCM. The accuracy of the present method is confirmed by comparing with the vibration analysis results of engine maker.

Free vibration analysis of power law and sigmoidal sandwich plates made up of functionally graded materials (FGMs) has been carried out using finite element based higher-order zigzag theory. The present model satisfies all-important conditions such as transverse shear stress-free conditions at the plate's top and bottom surface along with continuity condition for transverse stresses at the interface. A Nine-noded C0 finite element having eleven degrees of freedom per node is used during the study. The present model is free from the requirement of any penalty function or post-processing technique and hence is computationally efficient. The present model's effectiveness is demonstrated by comparing the present results with available results in the literature. Several new results have been proposed in the present work, which will serve as a benchmark for future works. It has been observed that the material variation law, power-law exponent, skew angle, and boundary condition of the plate widely determines the free vibration behavior of sandwich functionally graded (FG) plate.
The purpose of this research work is to demonstrate a successful application of hybrid-mixed formulation and nodeless degrees of freedom in developing a very accurate in-plane curved beam element for free vibration analysis. To resolve the numerical difficulties due to the spurious constraints, the present element, based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle and considering the effect of shear deformation, employed consistent stress parameters corresponding to cubic displacement polynomials with additional nodeless degrees. The stress parameters were eliminated by the stationary condition, and the nodeless degrees were condensed by Guyan Reduction. Several numerical examples indicated that the property of the mass matrix as well as that of the stiffness matrix have a great effect on the numerical performance. The element with consistent mass matrix produced best results on convergence and accuracy in the numerical analysis of Eigenvalue problems. Also, the higher-order mixed curved beam element showed a superior numerical behavior for the free vibration analyses.
In this study, it is attempted to obtain the optimum size of holes in 15 square plate models where a hole exists on every quadrant of a plate, and to get eigenvalues by performing free vibration analysis far each model. Moreover, the specimen is produced from optimized square plate and eigenvalue of each plate is measured through the shocking load. And then the result is compared with that of finite element analysis. For free vibration analysis of the square plate, the boundary condition of finite element analysis and experiment is assumed as both ends support. From the results of this study, it is known that more stable structures can be designed by changing the natural frequency which is dependent on the location of holes and further studies are considered to be necessary for the basic design information.
