  • Investigators use either Euclidean distance or volume of a simplex defined composed of data points as agreement index to measure chance-corrected agreement among observers for multivariate interval data. The agreement coefficient proposed by Um(2004) is based on a volume of a simplex and does not depend on the variables' measuring units. We consider a comparison of Um(2004)'s agreement coefficient with others based on two unit-free distance measures, Pearson distance and Mahalanobis distance. Comparison among them is made using hypothetical data set.

  • The aim of this study is to prepare biodegradable microspheres without use of any kind of surfactants or emulsifiers for a novel sustained delivery carriers of protein drugs. Poly(e-caprolactone)/poly(ethylene glycol)/poly(e-caprolactone) (CEC) triblock copolymer was synthesized by ring-opening of e-caprolactone with dihydroxy poly(ethylene glycol) and was used to make surfactant-free microspheres. • The wavelength dispersion of birefringence (or retardation) is very important property for optical use of polymer films. Birefringence free film and retardation film have been widely used for applications such as liquid crystal display (LCD). In this study, miscible polymer blends which consist of polymers of positive and negative birefringence were found. By operating composition and orientation of molecules in the transparent blend films, the behavior of wavelength dispersion of birefringence (retardation) was controlled. The applicability to wideband birefringence free film and quarter wave (retardation) film was discussed.

  • This paper deals with the rotation-free optical sensor which will be used for two dimensional robot tracking. This sensor consists of position sensing device and coordinate transformation unit which transform the sensor coordinate into base coordinate. A new coordinate transformation algorithm which use analog signal is presented, and an analog circuit based on this algorithm is constructed. To prove the rightness of this algorithm, same experiments are carried out. And the performance, of this sensor is investigated.

  • Recently, as size of building structure becomes larger, mat area of building structure is supported on Inhomogeneous foundation. The equipment machineries in building are mostly on basement story. The slab of the lowest basement story with equipment machineries is considerded as concentrated masses on plate supported on foundation. In this paper. vibration analysis of rectangular thin plate is done by use of rectangular finite element with 4 nodes. (omitted)

  • A metal-free and efficient procedure for the oxidation of alcohols into the corresponding carbonyl compounds has been described using ammonium nitrate in the presence of silica sulfuric acid under mild and heterogeneous conditions. The use of non-toxic and inexpensive materials, simple and clean work-up, short reaction times and good yields of the products are among the advantages of this method.

  • Integration and miniaturization at the systems level are key requirements for photonics applications. Here, we describe the concept of planar integration of free-space optical systems and its use as an optical interconnection technology. Two specific applications will be considered, a parallel chip-to-chip interconnect and an optical clock distribution network.

  • It is known that the rank 2 stably free syzygy module P(2) is not free. This algebraic fact was proved analytically, but this remarkable fact still lacks of a simple algebraic proof. The main purpose of this paper is to give a partially algebraic proof by making use of a theorem whose proof is quite topological, and the further properties of the module will be discussed.

  • Fast improvements in microsurgery have opened new strategies in the field of reconstructive trauma surgery that can be applied to severe elbow trauma management. The disadvantages of pedicle flaps can be overcome in the hand of an experienced trauma surgeon by using free flaps based on the perforators. This provides the patient with the best possible wound cover within the optimal time frame and the treatment of underlying additional structural damage. Although the authors presented only a small number of cases, the results of this study are promising and encourage the use of the ALT flap for the treatment of severe elbow trauma.

  • The use of a marker gene in a transformation process aims to give a selective advantage to the transformed cells, allowing them to grow faster and better, and to kill the non-transformed cells. In general, the selective gene is introduced into plant genome along with the genes of interest. In some cases, the marker gene can be the gene of interest that will confer an agronomic characteristic, such as herbicide resistance. In this review we list and discuss the use of the most common selective marker genes on plant transformation and the effects of their respective selective agents. These genes could be divided in categories according their mode of action: genes that confer resistance to antibiotics and herbicides; and genes for positive selection. The contention of the marker gene flow through chloroplast transformation is further discussed. Moreover, strategies to recover marker-free transgenic plants, involving multi-auto-transformation (MAT), co-transformation, site specific recombination and intragenomic relocation of transgenes through transposable elements, are also reviewed.
