  • Objectives: The purpose was to take a closer look at the fundamental principles of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and to investigate its clinical applications for Korean medical fields. Results: IPL is a type of light treatment that is employed by radiating the short-pulse wave, which is transformed from high-intensity light. It may be used to stimulate skin along meridian channels in clinical fields of Korean medicine like acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping therapy, Guasha therapy, and other related traditional techniques. So, it may be feasible to treat not only lentigines, freckles, facial dermatitis, and acne, but also other applications. In addition, it could be recommended for use with herb remedies or herb facial mask packs. Conclusions: IPL may be a plausible method in phototherapy of Korean medicine.

  • Freckle is defined that it is one sort of dermatoses which appears in face, neck and the back of the hand et and is due to excess pigmentation. Likewise, Vitiligo and Cloasma belongs to dyspigmentation. Although dermatitis it self is a s1ight illness, the extent of studying dermatitis is quite extensive because it is connected direct1y with the patient's appearance. However there has not been a certain way yet. After taking into consideration of previous orienta1 medical doctor's views about freckle by refering to ten kinds of books inc1uding "Je-Bung-Won-Hu-Ron(諸病源候論)", it obtained some opinions which is about a synthetic views, and the difference in disease to discriminate about several different names, cause of disease, symptom and treatment. • This paper was described about the preparation of the multi-functional mask pack and its evaluation. Here, the multi-functional effects means the far-infrared emissivity effect due to polyphosphoric acid, the freckles treatment effect and peeling effects due to inclusion complexes, and the skin temperature decreasing effect due to Lavender-extraction compounds. The the hazardous chemicals, viscosity, and pH were determined blow 0.01%, 280 cP, and pH=6.92 in the prepared multi-functional mask pack solution, respectively. The multi-functional mask pack prepared with dipping method in the solution were showed the value of $0.882{\mu}m$ (Far-infrared emissivity) and $3.40{\times}10^2W/m$ at $37^{\circ}C$ (Far-infrared radiation energy), respectively. After taking multi-functional mask pack, the skin moisturizing rate was indicated 35.5%, and the skin temperature was showed in the range of $24{\sim}26^{\circ}C$. The skin stimulation test for the 30 volunteer was showed very strong stability.

  • Arbutin is a hydroquinone derivative with a glucose moiety. As a tyrosinase inhibitor, it is widely used as a skin-whitening cosmetic agent for the treatment of cutaneous hyperpigmentary disorders, such as melasma and freckles. In the medical field, many studies have addressed the use of arbutin in various tumors, but the mechanism for tumor uptake of arbutin is still unclear. In this paper, we radiolabeled arbutin using radioiodine and studied its pharmacokinetics and tumor uptake via biodistribution experiments and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging. Radiolabeled $^{131}I-arbutin$ was stable for up to 24 h in PBS and serum. Biodistribution studies and SPECT imaging indicated high uptake of the compound in the bladder and kidneys shortly after injection. Twenty-four hours post-injection, significant deiodination was observed. Apart from high thyroid uptake, selective tumor uptake was clearly observed. The tumor-to-muscle and tumor-to-blood ratios were 26 and 9, respectively.

  • Anthracnose development by Colletotrichum musae was observed to be significantly less in the fruits of the banana cultivar 'Embul' (Mysore, AAB) infected with Phyllosticta musarum than in fruits without such infections. Anthracnose disease originates from quiescent C. musae infections in the immature fruit. P. musarum incites minute, scattered spots, referred to as freckles, in the superficial tissues of immature banana peel which do not expand during maturation or ripening. P. musarum does not appear to have a direct suppressive effect on C. musae as conidia of C. musae germinate on both freckled and non-freckled fruit forming quiescent infections. Our investigations have shown that P. musarum infection induced several defence responses in fruit including the accumulation of five phytoalexins, upregulation of chitinase and ${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase, phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) activity and cell wall lignification. $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ NMR spectral data of one purified phytoalexin compared closely with 4'-hydroxyanigorufone. Some of the P. musarum-induced defences that retained during ripening, restrict C. musae development at the ripe stage. This paper examines the potential of P. musarum-induced defences, in the control of anthracnose, the most destructive postharvest disease in banana.

  • Von Recklinghausen`s neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis and encephalotrigeminal angiomatosis[Sturge-Kalischer-Weber syndrome] are frequently classified under the heading of organic neurocutaneous syndromes. Both neurofibromatosis and tuberous sclerosis are believed to represent instances of simple autosomal dominant heredity. Multiple neurofibroma and cafe*-au-lait spots are the hallmarks of the van-Recklinghausen`s disease. The characteristic features of the fully developed syndrome are [1] pigmentation of the skin, including cafe*-au-lait spots, pigmented freckles and males, and occasionally a generalized darkening of the skin; [2] subcutaneous nodules and deep neurofibromatous tumors and diffuse plexiform growths of neural tissue; [3] skeletal anomalies, especially scoliosis; and [4] predilection to malignancy. In recent years cystic lung disease, usually of the so-called honeycomb lung variety, has been reported on several occasions in patients with tuberous sclerosis. This association has been shown to our sporadically as well as in members of a single family. Little attention has been paid to the presence of cystic lung disease in association with neurofibromatosis. Currently, most think of thoracic involvement in neurofibromatosis in terms of posterior mediastinal neuroma, pheochromocytoma, meningocele or, less commonly, parenchymal pulmonary neurofibromatosis. Author have experienced a case of von Recklinghausen`s disease. This case developed a huge neurofibroma in the both side thorax and invaded to the Lt. 7th rib.

  • The pathological condition of excessive melanogenesis causing freckles, melasma, senile lentigo, pigmented acne scars, and cancer has a critical impact on the wellness of individuals. The mechanism of melanogenesis is related to the expression of melanogenic enzymes. Here, we evaluated the inhibitory effect of pine cone (Pinus densiflora) extracts on melanogenesis. P. densiflora, the Korean Red Pine, is the predominant tree species in the cool, temperate forests of northeast Asia, occurring in pure stands across Korea, Japan, and parts of northern China and Russia. P. densiflora leaves, pollen, and bark have been widely used for traditional medicine, or edible purposes. However, pine cones are rarely used as natural raw materials, although they contain many bioactive phytochemicals. The pine cone ethyl acetate fraction (PEF) showed no toxicity to B16F10 cells at a concentration of less than $100{\mu}g/mL$. PEF inhibited the expression of microphthalmiaassociated transcription factor (MITF), tyrosinase and tyrosinase-related factors in B16F10 cells treated with 3-Isobutyl1-methylxanthine (IBMX). These results suggest that pine cones can be used as an effective natural melanogenesis inhibitory agent.
