Preliminary Structural Design of Wall-Frame Systems for Optimum Torsional Response

  • Recent investigations have pointed out that current code provisions specifying that the stiffness of reinforced concrete elements is strength independent, and therefore can be estimated prior to any strength assignment, is incorrect. A strength allocation strategy, suitable for preliminary structural design of medium height wall-frame dual systems, is presented for allocating strength in such buildings and estimating the dependable rigidities. The design process may be implemented by either the approximate continuous approach or the stiffness matrix method. It is based on the concept of the inelastic equivalent single-degree-of-freedom system which, the last few years, has been used to implement the performance based seismic design. The aforesaid strategy may also be used to determine structural configurations of minimum rotation distortion. It is shown that when the location of the modal centre of rigidity, as described in author's recent papers, is within a close distance from the mass axis the torsional response is mitigated. The methodology is illustrated in ten story building configurations, whose torsional response is examined under the ground motion of Kobe 1995, component KJM000.

  • The present experimental study is aimed to investigate the flow characteristics of the high-speed flow field within hot-water pump by PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry). As multi-point simultaneous velocity acquisition, 2-D PIV system based upon the two-frame gray-level cross correlation method is adopted using PC frame-grabber and simple video system. Gated image intensifier CCD Camera to cope with illumination problem is arranged for accurate PIV measurement of high-speed complex flow. The velocity vector distribution, velocity profile, and kinetic energy are represented quantitatively at the full-scale region for the deeper understanding of the unsteady flow characteristics in a pump.

Thermomechanics failure of RC composites: computational approach with enhanced beam model

  • In this paper we present a new model for computing the nonlinear response of reinforced concrete frame systems subjected to extreme thermomechanical loads. The first main feature of the model is its ability to account for both bending and shear failure of the reinforced concrete composites within frame-like model. The second prominent feature concerns the model capability to represent the total degradation of the material properties due to high temperature and the thermal deformations. Several numerical simulations are given to confirm these capabilities and illustrate a very satisfying model performance.

  • The Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) function of IEEE 802.11e standard defines contention window (CW) for different Access Category (AC) limits to support Quality-of-Service (QoS). However, it have been remained the problem that the collision probability of transmission is increasing in congested network. Several different solutions have been proposed but the collision occurs among same priority queue within the same station to compete the channel access. This paper presents an APCA (Advanced Priority Collision Avoidance) algorithm for EDCA that increases the throughput in saturated situation. The proposed algorithm use reserved field's bits of FC(Frame Control) using IEEE 802.11e standard's RTS/CTS (Request to Send / Clear to Send) mechanism to avoid data collision. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm improves the performance of EDCA in packet loss. Using Jain's fairness index formula, we also prove that the proposed APCA algorithm achieves the better fairness than EDCA method under network congested condition.

STAC/EPS Algorithm for Fast Tag Identification in RFID System (RFID 시스템에서 고속 태그 식별을 위한 STAC/EPS 알고리즘)

  • The PS algorithm divides the number of tags within the identification range of reader into smaller groups by increasing the transmission power incrementally and identifies them. It limits the number of responding tags by grouping the tags within the identification range of the reader, and thus can reduce the probability of tag collision. Also, in the PS algorithm, the reader takes advantages of the difference of identification ranges. This algorithm uses the fixed frame size at every scan. Therefore, it has problems that the performance can be shown variously according to the number of tags and frame size. In this paper, we propose an EPS algorithm that allocates the optimal frame size by estimating the number of tags at each scan, and apply it into the STAC protocol. The simulation results showed that STAC/EPS algorithm can improve the identification delay about 45% compared with STAC protocol. Also, it provides a stable identification delay regardless of power level increase.

  • As the requirements on precision and speed of motion in chip mounter increase, vibration forces are always exerted on operating conditions. To insure safety of the chip mounter, the vibration must be kept within an acceptable limit. The focus of this paper is on the identification of dynamic load characteristics and the estimation of static and dynamic stiffness characteristics for Frame Base by judicious selection of the number and the location of the support points. This study carried an analytical and experimental method to estimate the dynamic characteristics in structure.

  • In the current study, a force-based fiber frame finite element model of FRP concrete structural members has been developed. For compressive behaviors of confined concrete wrapped by FRP jackets, the multiaxial behavior of concrete has been considered with the equivalent tangent modulus of concrete. The behavior of FRP jackets has been modeled using the mechanics of orthotropic laminated composite materials in two-dimensional stress states. The force-based finite element formulation is based on the force-interpolation functions within the element without using the displacement shape functions to satisfy the equilibrium in element levels.

Discourse Analysis on Multicultural Children and Youth of Korean Press (한국언론의 다문화 아동청소년 담론 분석)

  • As of the end of the year 2016, the foreigners staying in Korea have surpassed 2 million people for the very first time ever since the statistical writings began. Because the inflow of the foreigners has been greatly increased within a short time period, the Korean society has been rapidly changing into a multi-racial and multi-ethnic society, and the children of the multicultural families, too, have been increasing gradually. Because of the social prejudices, discriminations, negative recognitions, etc., the children of the multicultural families get exposed to the diverse problems. It can be considered that such social prejudices and negative recognitions comprise the discourses that are possessed by the constituent members of the society regarding a certain subject or phenomenon. By analyzing the special characteristics and discourses of the reports on the multicultural children and youths by the Korean press through newspaper articles, this research confirmed what influences the media have in the process of forming the recognitions regarding the multicultural children and youths at present. As a result of the research, the discourses appearing in the newspapers could be typed into the support emphasizing frame of the Korean society, the adaptation emphasizing frame of the Korean society, the global people of talent frame, the change emphasizing frame of the Korean society, and the social problem emphasizing frame. Based on such research results, I made a proposal regarding the direction for the desirable reports by the media.

Examining Children's Peer - relationship Strategies of Free Play in a Child-care Center (어린이집의 자유놀이에서 놀이 틀 유지와 변화를 위한 유아의 또래관계 전략들)

  • This study, based on understanding the play features of the participants, explores early children's peer-relation strategies of maintaining and altering play frame and understanding the meaning of the strategies. Free play of 5-year-old children's was observed. The child-care center was visited 1 or 2 days a week, from March to October, 2012. The data collected were based from field notes, interviews with participants, their workbooks and more. The participants used strategies such as 'refusing', 'incapacitating', 'interpreting in a way to sympathize', and 'changing the rules of play' to maintain the play, whilst 'tell-on', 'being on the same side', 'accepting 3rd party' features were used to alter play frame. Participants using these various play-frame strategies experienced life implications of 'dialectic of exclusion and selection' and 'quiver of boundary'. This study, specifying efforts of the children to maintain and alter the play frame, will provide an understanding of perception of "social exclusion" to children, which has been viewed negatively in the past. It will also benefit on-site teachers in helping them understand peer-relationship within children and provide a more in-depth intervention for peer-relationship issues.

Familiarity and Preference on Korean Typefaces by Serif and Square-Frame (한글 글꼴의 세리프 및 네모틀 여부에 따른 친숙성과 선호도)

  • Korean typefaces are characterized on two axes: a font is either serifed or non-serifed, and it is either square-frame or non-squared. A serifed font entails small strokes that are regularly attached to the ends of larger strokes. Conversely, fonts without these marks are termed sans-serif. One of the exclusive features of Korean typeface of the square-frame type is that in such fonts, vowels and consonants often with their final vowels, are harmonically placed within the boundaries of the virtual square. We hypothesize that serifed and squared-frame typefaces are more popular and preferred owing to their widespread use throughout history. A survey incorporating Korean pangrams written with serif, sans-serif, squared, and non-squared typefaces was designed to test the present hypothesis. We found that people typically preferred and were more familiar with squared typefaces compared to non-squared typefaces. However, no difference was observed between serifed and san-serif typefaces. Furthermore, a positive correlation was found between familiarity and preference ratings only where the typefaces had squared and serifed features. The results revealed that Korean typefaces with the squared feature were more well-known and, therefore, more preferred to the typefaces without it. The results further indicated that Korean typefaces with the squared feature can be recommended for people's familiarity to it and the comfort it provides, and their emotional relevance and sensibility enhanced if serifs are added.
