The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of dentin pretreatment with Dentin Conditioner, Ultra-Etch, conditioner of Fuji Plus cement on the shear bond strength of resin-reinforced glass ionomer cements to dentin and analyze the fractured surfaces. To evaluate the bond strength, the extracted human teeth which had uniform area of exposed dentin were cemented with conventional glass ionomer cement, 3M $RelyX^{TM}$ Luting (Vitremer luting cement), Fuji Plus cement after dentin pretreatment. The shear bond strength was measured using the Universal testing machine (Instron Co., USA) with a crosshead speed of 1mm/m. The effect of dentin pretreatment was evaluated by observing pretreated dentin surfaces under the scanning electron microscope, measuring the shear bond strength and observing the fractured surfaces under the scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows : On the SEM observation of surface morphology, the specimens treated with Dentin Conditioner. Ultra-Etch and conditioner of Fuji Plus cement were removed the smear layer and funneled dentinal tubules in dentin surfaces. In $RelyX^{TM}$ Luting cement group, shear bond strength of pretreated group was significantly higher than control group. In Fuji Plus cement group and Fuji I group, regardless of the type of pretreatment agents, there was tendency of increase in the shear bond strength. On the SEM observation of fractured surfaces, as the shear bond strength increase, it were shown thicker cement layers and were not shown dentinal tubules According to these results. it were shown that dentin pretreatment have much effect on bonding states.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the shear bond strength between porcelain laminate veneer and enamel according to the surface treatment and thermocycling. Group I, as a control group, was sandblasted only; group II was sandblasted and etched; group III was sandblasted and silane treated; and group IV was sandblasted, etched and silane treated. A porcelain block was placed onto the etched enamel under a 150g static load and the bonded site was light-cured from 4 directions for 1 minute each. The 72 bonded specimens were stored in water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1 day. Half of each group were thermocycled at $4^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$ for 100 cycles with a dwelling time in each bath of 1 min. Following thermocycling, the specimens were installed in an Instron universal testing machine and the shear bond strength was measured. After the specimens were fractured, the fractured surfaces were examined with SEM. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The shear bond strength of the sandblasted and etched and silane treated group(Group IV) was the strongest of all, and the shear bond strengths between the sandblasted group(Group I) and the sandblasted and silane treated group(Group III) were not statistically different(p>0.05). 2. When the shear bond strength was measured after thermocycling, only the sandblasted, etched and silane treated group(Group IV) was statistically different(p<0.05). 3. The scanning electron microscopic views of the fractured surfaces show more irregularities and more resin fragments in the etched group than in the unetched group. 4. The scanning electron microscopic views of the fractured surfaces show a more delicate surface after thermocycling and after silane treatment than before thermocycling and before silane treatment.

Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness was measured and fractured surfaces were observed of carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy woven fabric composites for carbody structure. Woven fabric carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy composites that made with prepreg and epoxy resin(RS1222) are used in carbody structure of Korean tilting train(TTX) and low floor bus. ENF(End Notched Flexure) specimens having $120mm{\times}20m{\times}5mm$ shape and 35mm initial crack were made with each composites and three point bending tests according to ASTM D790 were conducted for these specimens. Crack lengths in tests were recorded using optical microscope and digital camcorder. NL(Non Linear), 5% offset and Max. load points in load -displacement curves were checked and mode II interlaminar fracture toughness of these points were calculated and compared. Fractured surfaces of specimens were observed using optical microscope and mode II delamination behavior of each composites was discussed.
Profiles of naturally fractured surfaces of three sedimentary rock samples were plotted from the measured data using a mechanical profilometer. Fractal dimension of these profiles were computed and statistical F-test indicates that fractal dimension (FD) values can be used as a parameter for distinguishing the rock types. The comparison between FD values and a commonly used profile-roughness parameter called the Mayer's $Z_2$ parameter shows the superiority of the FD values as roughness estimator. Two-dimensional fractal roughness parameters of the same naturally fractured rock surfaces were also studied from their scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images at various magnification levels. The most suitable level of magnification of the SEM images for the study of the 2-D fractal roughness parameter was identified. The values of 2-D fractal roughness parameter for three different rocks were also compared using different methods of fractal dimensioning.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the in vivo amalgam corrosion products qualitatively. 30 molars with large, intact amalgam restorations were selected. All the restorations were more than 5 years old. Twenty of the removed amalgams were embedded in acrylic resin block. The exposed surfaces of fifteen embedded amalgams were polished by amalgam polishing kit, and the rest were observed without polishing. The remaining 10 amalgams were fractured centrally and perpendiculary to the occlusal surface with a wire-cutter. After all specimens were cleaned ultrasonically in distilled water, each surface was examined under S.E.M. and E.D.A.X. (Energy Dispersive Micro X-ray Analyzer) to determine the morphology and chemical nature of the corrosion products. The following results were obtained: 1. The surfaces of the unpolished amalgam restorations were covered with thin amorphous layer of Sn-Ca-P-S complex with numerous cracks. 2. In the conventional amalgams, the major corrosion products were Sn-Cl phases however, tin oxide phases were also observed. 3. Only tin oxide phase was identified in the high copper amalgam, but it was less frequently observed than in the conventional amalgam. 4. It was easier to observe the corrosion product morphology in the fractured surfaces than in the polished ones. The morphologies of the corrosion product crystals looked like a stack of slightly bended plates in the Sn-Cl phases and polyhedra or polygonal prisms in the tin oxide phases.

Failure analyses of the screws in spinal fixation devices were carried out. The fractured screws were retrieved from a patient who had spinal surgery in the thoracic vertebrae from number 10 to 15. The failure occurred one month after the removal of the braces. Microstructures and fracture surfaces were examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The microstructures of the screws corresponded to annealed Ti-6Al-4V bar. However, in the vicinity of the screw surface, there was an insufficient number of fine precipitates. Fracture surfaces showed typical fatigue failure modes. Regarding the fact that no machining defects were detected, fatigue crack initiation might have been caused by the lack of precipitates near the screw surfaces. Only the fourth of five fixed screws was severely stress-concentrated by the action of the spinal bones, while the stress of the 4th screw was decreased to half of its acceptable level when the screw was supplemented by one more, which might have been fixed in the 6th vertebra under the 5th position by the switching of its position. The stress simulation was conducted by ANSYS with 3D CAD of PRO/E in order to understand the stress concentration behavior and to provide an effective spinal surgery guide.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of wetting condition made by drying time on bonding of resin cement to dentin. Freshly extracted bovine teeth were grinded to expose flat dentin surfaces. After the exposed dentin surfaces were treated with pretreatment agents and water rinse, each wetting condition of dentin surfaces was made according to drying times and methods including slight blow bry for I-second by air syringe, blow dry for 20-second by air syringe, and 12-hour dry in desiccator respectively. and then, previously made composite resin specimens were bonded onto each conditioned dentin surface of the specimen using Panavia-21(Kuraray Co.), Bistite(Tokuso Co.), and Choice(use with All bond-2, Bisco Inc.) resin cement according as manufacturer's instruction. Bonded specimens were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 24 hours, then the tensile bond strength was measured, cohesive failure rate was calculated, and fractured dentin surfaces and acrylic rod sides were examined under scanning electron microscope. The result were as follows ; In the group of bonding with Panavia-21 resin cement, higher tensile bond strength was seen in 12-hour dry group than in I-second and 20-second dry group(p<0.01). In the group of bonding with Bistite resin cement, higher tensile bond strength was seen in 1-second dry group than in 20-second and 12-hour dry group(p<0.01). In the group of bonding with Choice resin cement, no significant differences of bond strength under given drying time were seen. Cohesive failure rates derived from the groups of bonding with Panavia-21 and Choice resin cement were increased with the increase of tensile bond strength in each drying time. On SEM examination of fractured surface, adhesive failure mode with fractured resin tags was mostly seen in wet condition with I-second drying time in the group of bonding with Panavia-21 resin cement, mixed failure mode with shortened and fractured resin tag was seen in the group of bonding with Bistite resin cement, and regardless of drying time, and cohesive-adhesive mixed failure mode with fracture of 'Hollow' typed resin tags was mainly seen in the group of bonding with Choice resin cement.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of etching by monitoring the etched surfaces and the shear bonding strength of resin and porcelain with etched zirconia. Methods: The CAD/CAM was used to produce 24 zirconia blocks in groups of six. The zirconia specimen surfaces were sandblasted, and they were then divided into 12 specimens with surface etching and 12 specimens without etching for the control group. 12 specimens of composite resin were bonded using a curing light, and 12 specimens of porcelain underwent vita porcelain build-up sintering and the shear bonding strength was measured using a universal testing system. The SEM photographs were taken in order to observe any differences in the surfaces before and after etching, and they were magnified by a factor of 8 in order to observe fractured surface types. Results: The results of the shear bonding strength measurements are as follows: For the composite resin tests, between zirconia and resin, the shear bonding strength of the control group (NZR) without surface etching was 4.68 Mpa and the experimental group (EZC) with surface etching was 9.65 Mpa, which is significantly higher. The crystal structure of the zirconia was confirmed to be different in observations of the surfaces before and after etching. Conclusion : In comparing the shear bonding strength of zirconia and composite resin, the effects of etching were found to be significant. The effects of surface etching were also observed in fractured surfaces between zirconia and porcelain. This is expected to be applicable to various prosthetics as surface etching on zirconia is used in clinics.
Real crack and fracture surfaces have irregularities producing zigzag contours. These irregularities are analysed by a fractal geometry which has been by a Mandelbrot. We obtained a fractal dimension which is one of the fractal characteristics. It is also estimated by an vertical section method that fractal characteristics in the fractured surfaces can be obtained as the crack grows. Moreover fractal fracture energy that corresponds to an energy release rate is shown to find relationships between fractal dimensions and crack behaviors. From these results, we concluded that a fractal characteristics analysis for a crack can be applied to a fracture mechanics.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of stannous fluoride on the dentin bonding with three kinds of commercially available dentin bonding systems containing different adhesive monomers. Dentin specimens with exposed labial dentin prepared from freshly extracted bovine mandibular anterior teeth were divided into experimental and control groups. The specimens of experimental groups were bonded with dentin bonding systems and composite resins including All bond 2 ㅡ& Bisfil, Scotchbond Multi-Purpose & Z100, and Denthesive II Charisma after 2 % stannous& fluorided application for S minutes and washing for 1 minute. The specimens of control groups were bonded with the same dentin bonding systems and composite resins as used in the experimental groups. After bonded specimens were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 24 hours, the tensile bond strength and cohesive failure rate were measured, and then the pretreated dentin surfaces and the fractured dentin surfaces were examined under scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows : Mean bond strength of stannous fluoride applied groups of All bond 2, Scotchbond MP, and Denthesive II were 2.5MPa, 1.1MPa, and 1.1MPa respectively, and those of control groups were 7.5MPa, 8.1MPa, and 4.6MPa. Bond strength values of stannous fluoride applied groups were significantly lower than those of the control groups(p<0.05). SEM findings of dentin surfaces after stannous fluoride application demonstrated an appearance of partially remained smear layer and smear plugs inspite of pretreatment with 10 % phosphoric aicd or maleic acid solution, and an appearance of smear layer covered surface under Denthesive II priming. But those of control groups commonly showed clean dentin surfaces without smear layer and smear plugs. On SEM observation of the fractured dentin-resin interface, while most of the specimens of stannous fluoride applied groups showed adhesive failure mode, those of All bond 2 and Scotchbond MP control groups showed mainly adhesive-cohesive mixed failure mode, and mainly adhesive failure mode in Denthesive II control group.
