Modified singular fracture process zone(S-FPZ) model is proposed in this paper to determine a fracture criterion for continuous crack propagation in concrete. The investigated fracture properties of the proposed fracture model are strain energy release rate at a micro-crack tip and the relationship between crack closure stress(CCS) and crack opening displacement(COD) in the FPZ. The proposed model can simulate the actual fracture energy of experimental results fairly well. The results of the experimental data analysis show that specimen geometry and loading condition did not affect the CCS-COD relation. However, the strain energy release rate is a function of not only specimen geometry but also crack extension. The strain energy release rate remained constantly at the minimum value up to the crack extension of 25 mm, and then it increased linearly to the maximum value. The maximum fracture criterion occurred at the peak load for specimens of large size. The fracture criterion remained at the maximum value after the peak load. The variation of the fracture criterion is caused by micro-cracking and micro-crack localization. The fracture criterion of strain energy release rate can simply be the size effect of concrete fracture, and it can be used to quantify the micro-cracking and micro-crack localizing behavior of concrete.
This study investigated the loading rate effect on the fracture resistance under cyclic loading conditions to understand clearly the fracture behavior of piping materials under seismic conditions. J-R fracture toughness tests were conducted under monotonic and cyclic loading conditions at various displacement rates at room temperature and the operating temperature of nuclear power plants (i.e., $316^{\circ}C$). SA508 Gr.1a low-alloy steel and SA312 TP316 stainless steel piping materials were used for the tests. The fracture resistance under a reversible cyclic load was considerably lower than that under monotonic load regardless of test temperature, material, and loading rate. Under both cyclic and monotonic loading conditions, the fracture behavior of SA312 TP316 stainless steel was independent of the loading rate at both room temperature and $316^{\circ}C$. For SA508 Gr.1a lowalloy steel, the loading rate effect on the fracture behavior was appreciable at $316^{\circ}C$ under cyclic and monotonic loading conditions. However, the loading rate effect diminished when the cyclic load ratio of the load (R) was -1. Thus, it was recognized that the fracture behavior of piping materials, including seismic loading characteristics, can be evaluated when tested under a cyclic load of R = -1 at a quasistatic loading rate.

The fracture energy evaluated from the previous experimental results can be simulated by using the modified singular fracture process zone (S-FPZ) model. The fracture model has two fracture properties of strain energy release rate for crack extension and crack close stress versus crack width relationship $f_{ccs}(w)$ for fracture process zone (FPZ) development. The $f_{ccs}(w)$ relationship is not sensitive to specimen geometry and crack velocity. The fracture energy rate in the FPZ increases linearly with crack extension until the FPZ is fully developed. The fracture criterion of the strain energy release rate depends on specimen geometry and crack velocity as a function of crack extension. The behaviors of micro-cracking, micro-crack localization and full development of the FPZ in concrete can be explained theoretically with the variation of strain energy release rate with crack extension.

It is generally accepted that fracture toughness of fiber-reinforced polymer composites is affected by loading rate in an atmospheric presure condition. For a present study, the loading rate effect on the fracture toughness of fiber-reinforced laminated composites in the hydrostatic pressure condition was investigated. For this purpose, fracture tests have been conducted using carbon/epoxy composites applying three steps of the strain rate at 270 MPa hydrostatic pressure condition. The loading rates applied were 0.05%/sec, 0.25%/sec, and 0.55%/sec. Fracture toughness was determined from the work factor approach as a function of applied loading rate. The result showed that fracture toughness decreased as the loading rate increased. Specifically, the fracture toughness decreased 12% as the loading rate increased from 0.05%/sec to 0.55%/sec.

It is well-known that the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced composites under hydrostatic pressure environment is different from that of atmospheric pressure environment. It is also known that the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced composites is affected by a strain rate. In this work, we investigated the effect of strain rate on the compressive elastic modulus, fracture stress, and fracture strain of carbon/epoxy composites under hydrostatic pressure environment. The material used in the compressive test was unidirectional carbon/epoxy composites and the hydrostatic pressures applied was 270㎫. Compressive tests were performed applying three strain rates of 0.05%/sec, 0.25%/sec, and 0.55%/sec. The results showed that the elastic modulus increased with increasing strain rate while the fracture stress was little affected by the strain rate. The results also showed that the fracture strain decreased with increasing strain rate.

In this paper, the evaluation method of interfacial fracture toughness to apply the fracture toughness was investigated in adhesively bonded joints of AI/Ced./A1. Four types of adhesively bonded double-cantilever beam(DCB) joints with the interface crack were prepared for the test of interfacial fracture toughness. The experiments to measure the interfacial fracture toughness were performed under the various mixed-mode conditions. The critical energy release rate, Gc, was obtained by the experimental measurement of compliances. From the experimental results, the interfacial fracture toughness for the mixed-mode specimens is well characterized by the energy release rate, and the method of strength evaluation by the interfacial fracture toughness was discussed in adhesively bonded joints.

The present article shows how the fracture strength of single crystal silicon chips, which are generally used as semiconductor devices, is influenced by loading rate variation during a 3-point bending test. It was found that the fracture strength of the silicon chips slightly increases up to 4% with increasing loading rate for loading rates lower than 20 mm/min. Meanwhile, the fracture strength of the chips hardly increases with increase of loading rate to levels higher than 40 mm/min. However, there was an abrupt transition in the fracture strength within a loading rate range of 20 mm/min to 40 mm/min. This work explains through microscopic examination of the fracture surface of all test chips that such a big transition is related to the deflection of crack propagation direction from the (011) [${\bar{1}}00$] system to the (111) [${\bar{2}}11$] system in a particular loading rate (i.e. from 20 mm/min to 40 mm/min).

An experimental method to investigate the fracture strength and fracture toughness for the silicon nitrides sintered at various sintering temperature is established. The erosion rate for these materials in the various concentration of NaOH solution is also investigated. In result, the fracture strength of Si3N4 is decreased with the increase of sintering temperature. On the other hand, the fracture toughness KIC is increased with the increase of sintering temperature. The erosion rate of silicon nitride in the NaOH solution depend largely on the grain size and the concentration of NaOH solution. The erosion rate of silicon nitride sintered at $1800^{\circ}C$ was much higher than that at $1950^{\circ}C$. These results are due to the unique columnar structure of silicon nitride.

In the low cycle fatigue fracture testing with KS(or JIS) SS41, crack growth rate, AE count rate and J-integral range are measured to get empirical relations between crack growth rate and J-integral range, AE count rate and J-integral range as well as AE count rate and crack growth rate. All the relations are shown to be linear on the log-log graphs. It is also shown that the linear relations can be formulated by using Dunegan's assumption and elastic-plastic fracture mechanics along with the well-known relation of crack growth rate and J-integral range. It is concluded that the differences between experimental and theoretical values are due to Dunegan's assumption.
