  • The permeability coefficients were calculated by the homogenization analysis method with sufficient consideration of fracture geometry dependent on aperture change. According to the results of aperture measurements using a confocal laser scanning microscope, apertures on each measuring point display different magnitudes, indicating that fracture walls can not be assumed as parallel feature. After construction of fracture model based on the aperture values measured on each pressure level, the homogenization analysis was conducted to compute permeability coefficients. The calculated permeability coefficients distribute in the ranges of $10^{-1}~10^{-3}cm/sec$. Most of the specimens show decreasing permeability coefficients with the increase of the applied pressure. However, the decreasing rates of permeability coefficients do not show a constant trend on each pressure level. This phenomenon is well matched to the observation results of Chae et al. (2003). It proves that aperture change strongly influences on permeability characteristics. Three sections of each specimen have all different values of permeability coefficient. It suggests that the variation of permeability coefficient depends sensitively on aperture magnitudes and characteristics of fracture geometry. It is very important to consider accurate fracture geometries for analysis of permeability characteristics in rock fractures bearing different aperture distribution. Therefore, it needs to consider sufficiently the fracture geometries for calculating the permeability coefficients of fractures.

  • This study deals with the mechanical properties of STS304-Al351 friction welding zone. Main results are as follows ; under the condition of upset pressure 75MPa, the tensile strength of STS304-al6351 friction weld interface was higher than that of Al6351 base metal, and the highest tensile strength(290MPa) was obtained at upset pressure 125MPa. The hardness profile across the weld interface shows that the hardness of both STS304 and Al6351 is higher around the weld interface, and sharply increased hardness on the STS304 side is related with the plastic deformation of micro volume. As the result of analyzing the tensile fracture, it showed perfect soft fracture.

  • In order to find an optimal friction-welding condition for Ni-base ODS alloy (MA 754) produced by mechanical alloying, joint experiments were performed with various conditions of friction pressures (50~500 MPa), friction times (1~5 sec) and upset pressures (50~600 MPa). The optimal friction pressure and upset pressure must be above 400 MPa and 500 MPa, respectively, which are determined by tensile strengths and fracture features of as-welded joints. A maximum stress설h of 975 MPa could be obtained under these pressure conditions at friction time of 2 sec. Microstructural features of bonded interface by optical microscope and SEM revealed that the interface regions of all specimens are consisted with three distinct regions and defects such as voids, cracks and wavy interfaces exist in the joints produced under not-optimized conditions. EDS results showed that these defects include oxides composed with elements of Al, Y and Ti. The hardness on the bonded interface was higher than in the base metal region. Specimens fractured in bonded interface region had lower strength values compared to those fractured in base metal region. Surfaces of the former showed a typical intergranular fracture.

  • Low temperature fatigue crack propagation ratio and characteristics of the pressure structural steel which is used for the low temperature pressure vessels. Fatigue crack properties was studied at room temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ and low temperature ranges $-60^{\circ}C,\; -80^{\circ}C \;and\; -100^{\circ}C$ with stress ratio of R=0.05, 0.1, 0.3 in the logarithmic relationship between the fatigue crack propagation rate (da/dN) and stress intensity factor $\DeltaK$, in low temperature case the relationship was extend to the range of low crack propagation rate. The fractured specimens were examined by SEM tested. That results showed specimen failed at low temperature exhibit the quasi-cleavage fracture formation, however, considerable ductility proceed final fracture.

  • There have been numerous approaches to examine the bonding strengths of solder joints. However, despite the technical and practical limitations, the precedent test methods such as the ball shear and ball pull tests are being used in industrial applications. In this study, the optimum jaw pressure with the modified protrusion jaw was introduced in order to obtain higher successful rate f3r ball pull testing. Furthermore, the pull strengths and fracture modes of Sn-8Zn-3Bi, Sn-4Ag-0.7Cu, and Sn-37Pb eutectic solder after isothermal aging tests ($100^{\circ}C,\;150^{\circ}C$), were evaluated with the protrusion jaw. The pull strength-displacement hysteresis curves and fracture surfaces were carefully investigated to evaluate the correlation between the pull strengths and the fracture modes of each solder. In conclusion, it is verified that Au-Zn IMCs (Intermetallic Compounds) have a detrimental effect on the pull strengths and changed fracture modes of Sn-8Zn-3Bi solder. Meanwhile, the microstructure transformation influences the degradation of pull strengths of Sn-4Ag-0.7Cu and Sn-37Pb solders.

  • In this paper, a stress-strain model for high-strength confined concrete is proposed using compressive fracture energy. In the compression test performed by author in Reference [6], an acrylic bar with strain gauges was embedded in the center of the specimen to measure the local strain distribution. It was found from the test that the local strain measurement by this acrylic rod is very effective. The local fracture zone length was defined based on the local strain distribution measured by the acrylic rod. Specifically, it was defined as the length where the local strain increases more than twice of the strain corresponding to maximum stress. In addition, the stress-strain relationship of confined concrete with compressive fracture energy is proposed on the assumption that the amount of energy absorbed by the compressive members subjected to the given lateral confining pressure is constant regardless of the aspect ratio and size. The proposed model predicts even results from other researchers accurately.

  • Portland cement concrete, which has higher strength and stiffness than asphalt concrete, has been widely applied on pavements. However, the brittle fracture characteristic of cement concrete restricts its application in highway pavement construction. Since the polypropylene fiber can improve the fracture toughness of cement concrete, Polypropylene Fiber-Reinforced Concrete (PFRC) is attracting more and more attention in civil engineering. In order to study the effect of polypropylene fiber on the generation and evolution process of the local deformation band in concrete, a series of three-point bending tests were performed using the new technology of the digital speckle correlation method for FRC notched beams with different volumetric contents of polypropylene fiber. The modified Double-K model was utilized for the first time to calculate the stress intensity factors of instability and crack initiation of fiber-reinforced concrete beams. The results indicate that the polypropylene fiber can enhance the fracture toughness. Based on the modified Double-K fracture theory, the maximum fracture energy of concrete with 3.2% fiber (in volume) is 47 times higher than the plain concrete. No effort of fiber content on the strength of the concrete was found. Meanwhile to balance the strength and resistant fracture toughness, concrete with 1.6% fiber is recommended to be applied in pavement construction.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the hydrogen embrittlement of Zr-2.5Nb CANDU pressure tube at room temperature. The transverse tensile and fracture toughness tests were performed at various hydrogen concentrations using transverse tensile specimens and CCT (curved compact tension) specimens. These specimens were directly machined from the pressure tube retaining original curvatures. Based on the results of these tests. the hydrogen embrittlement phenomenon was clearly observed and fracture toughness parameters of Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube materials such as, $K_{J(0.2)}$.$J_{ML}$.dJ/da, were dramatically decreased with the increasement of the hydrogen concentration. From microscopic observation by SEM and TEM, it was also revealed that various shapes dimples, fissures and quasi-cleavage were found at the hydrogen-absorbed materials with hydrides while traditional shape dimples were generally located at the as-received materials Through the comparison of the hydride and fissure lengths with the hydrogen concentration the new evaluation method of hydrogen embrittlement was suggested.

  • The assembled structures of pressure rice cooker are consisted of oven, top heater plate and locking ring. Since pressure is applied to the assembled structures, it should be necessary to check the safety. In this paper, structural analyses are performed from design and fracture point of view. For the design point of view, linear analysis is performed to assembled structure and for the fracture point of view, nonlinear analysis is performed to locking ring. From these results safety evaluation technique for the assembled structures of pressure rice cooker is proposed.
