Generally almost all fatigue crack growth is affected by mode I. For this reason a study on mode I has concentrated in the field of fracture mechanics. However the fatigue crack initiation and growth in machines and structures usually occur in mixed mode loading. If there is any relationship between the cause of fracture in mixed mode loading and fracture surface, fracture surface pattern will be the main mean explaining reasons of fatigue fracture and obtaining further information about fracture process. In this paper low point shear-fatigue test with Aluminum alloy hi 5083-O is carried out from this prospect and then the mixed mode distribution of fracture surface is examined from the result after identifying the generation of fatigue crack surface pattern. It was found from the experimental results that the fatigue crack surface pattern and the fatigue crack shear direction are remarkably consistent. Furthermore It is possible that the analysis of distribution of mixed mode through the fatigue crack surface pattern.

Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the personality type, problematic drinking pattern, and stress coping style of the nasal bone fracture patients by comparing those with general fracture patients. Methods: 50 nasal bone fracture patients due to violence and 50 general fracture patients due to simple trauma, such as fall and traffic accident were conveniently selected. Results: The study results showed that nasal bone fracture patients due to violence significantly presented higher level of A type personality and more problematic drinking pattern than general fracture patients due to simple trauma. Stress coping style, however, did not show significant difference between two groups. Conclusion: In order to prepare prevention strategies for basal bone fracture in the future, health education alter problematic drinking habit to sound drinking pattern may be offered and provided nursing interventions tailored to A type personality.
Compressive ability is one of the most important mechanical properties of concrete material. The compressive failure process of concrete is pretty complex with internal tension, shear damage and friction between cracks. To simulate the complex fracture process of concrete at meso level, methodology for meso-structural analysis of concrete specimens is developed; the zero thickness cohesive elements are pre-inserted to simulate the crack initiation and propagation; the constitutive applied in cohesive element is established to describe the mechanism of crack separation, closure and friction behavior between the fracture surfaces. A series of simulations were carried out based on the model proposed in this paper. The results reproduced the main fracture and mechanical feature of concrete under compression condition. The effect of key material parameters, structure size, and aggregate content on the concrete fracture pattern and loading carrying capacities was investigated. It is found that the inner friction coefficient has a significant influence on the compression character of concrete, the compression strength raises linearly with the increase of the inner friction coefficient, and the fracture pattern is sensitive to the mesostructure of concrete.
Purpose: The clinical utility of brain computed tomography (CT) in detecting temporal bone fracture is not well established. We performed this study to determine the utility of brain computed tomography (CT) in detecting fractures of the temporal bones in correlation with fracture patterns. We used high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) as the gold standard for diagnosing temporal bone fracture and its pattern. Methods: From January 2007 to December 2009, patients who underwent both brain CT and HRCT within 10 days of head trauma were investigated. Among them, 58 cases of temporal bone fracture confirmed by HRCT were finally included. Fracture patterns (transverse or non-transverse, otic capsule sparing or otic capsule violating) were determined by HRCT. Brain CT findings in correlation with fracture patterns were analyzed. Results: Among 58 confirmed cases of temporal bone fracture by HRCT, 14 cases (24.1%) were not detected by brain CT. Brain CT showed a significantly lower ability to detect temporal bone fracture with transverse component than without transverse component (p=0.020). Moreover, brain CT showed lower ability to detect otic capsule violating pattern than otic capsule sparing pattern (p=0.015). Among the 14 cases of temporal bone fracture that were not detected by brain CT, 4 cases lacked any objective physical findings (facial palsy, hemotympanum, external auditory canal bleeding) suggesting fractures of the temporal bones. Conclusion: Brain CT showed poor ability to detect temporal bone fracture with transverse component and otic capsule violating pattern, which is associated with a poorer clinical outcome than otic capsule sparing pattern. Routine use of HRCT to identify temporal bone fracture is warranted, even in cases without evidence of temporal bone fracture on brain CT scans or any objective physical findings suggestive of temporal bone fracture.

Bony remodeling pattern of condyle fractures in children are different from in adult for growing of condyle, also might affect treatment and prognosis of the condyle fracture. Subjects of this clinical and radiologic study were 26 temporomandibular joints diagnosed as condyle fracture in 23 patients under 15 years old age. They were treated with conservative method at Dental Hospital of Yonsei University from Jan., 1986 to Oct., 1994. Bony remodeling related with fracture pattern was evaluated. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The ratio of male to female in patients with condyle fracture was 1 : 0.9 and the difference of sex ratio was not noted. Comparing with preschool-age group and school-age group, age frequency was higher in preschool-age group(83%). 2. Fallen down(54%) was the most frequent cause of condyle fractures. Traffic accident and slip down were followed. 3. The most common clinical sign of condyle fractures was tenderness to paipation09 cases). Mouth opening limitation07 cases), swelling(7 cases), malocclusion(3 cases) were next in order. 4. According to sites of condyle fractures, unilateral fractures were in 20 patients and bilateral fractures in 3 patients, therefore total 23 patients-26 cases of condyle fracture were observed. According to fracture distribution, condyle fractures were in 10 patients(44%). Condyle fractures with symphysis fracture(9 patients, 39%), condyle fractures with ascending ramus fracture(2 patients, 9%), condyle fracture with mandibular body fracture(1 patient, 4%), and condyle fractures with mandibular angle fracture(1 patient, 4%) were followed. 5. In displacement pattern of fractured fragment of mandibular condyle, dispiacement(17 cases, 66%) was most common. Dislocation(5 cases, 19%) and deviation (4 cases, 15%) were next in order. 6. During the observation period of fractured condyles, remodeling patterns of fracture sites related with articular fossa were observed with usual condylar shape in 23 cases and with prominently different shape in 3 cases.
In this paper, the possibilities of the laser overlap spot welding were studied to utilize the advantageous properties of amorphous metal foils. In order to estimate the usage of amorphous metals foils as structural members, the tensile shear strength and the fracture features were investigated. Although the crystalline zone on the surface was formed, it was not the direct cause of the fracture of the weld. The fracture of the weld resulted from the geometry discontinuity between the workpiece and the protrusion zone, which was formed during the weld process. The vein pattern - the typical feature of the fracture of the amorphous metal - was formed on the fracture surface. The tensile shear stress was reached to 1200 N/㎟ (2-foils overlap welding) and 900 N/㎟ (10-foils overlap welding), whereas the tensile strength of the workpiece was 1500-2000 N/㎟.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of two fiber post systems and one metal cast post system on the fracture strength and fracture pattern of crowned, endodontically treated teeth with 2 mm-height of the reamining tooth structure. Materials and methods: A total of 36 recently extracted sound human mandibular premolars were selected Each tooth structure of the crown portion except 2mm-height of the one above the cementoenamel junction was removed. After being endodontically treated, they were randomly distributed into 3 groups: group 1, restored with quarts fiber post(D.T. Light-Post), group 2, with glass fiber post(FRC Postec), and group 3, metal cast post and core. All teeth were fully covered with nonprecious metal crowns. Each specimen was embedded in an acrylic resin block and then secured in a universal load-testing machine. A compressive load was applied at a 130 degree angle to the long axis of the tooth until fractured, at a crosshead speed 20mm/min. The highest fracture loads were measured and recorded as the fracture strength of each specimen. Fracture areas were measured on the mid-buccal and mid-lingual point from the crown margins. One-way analysis of variance and Turkey test were used to determine the statistic significance of the different fracture loads and areas among the groups (p<0.05). Results: The mean fracture loads were $1391{\pm}$425N(group 1), $1458{\pm}476N$(group 2) and $1301{\pm}319N$(group 3). The fracture loads among the three groups had no statistically signifiant difference (p>.05). The mean fracture area of the fiber post was closer to the crown margin than that of the metal cast post and core(p<.05). The metal cast post showed unrestorable and catastrophic fracture patterns. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, fracture loads with any statistically significant difference were not recorded for endodontically treated teeth restored with two fiber posts and the metal cast post. But teeth restored with the fiber posts typically showed the fracture pattern close to the crown margin, which was almost restorable.

In recent years, the importance of the characterization of fall for a fracture prevention system keeps increasing since fracture from a fall can lead to serious health problems. Fall is one of the major sources which increase morbidity in elderly people. In terms of the cost and the influence to the quality of life, the most serious injury with hip fractures is caused by falls. The traditional methods in characterizing fall patterns have been mainly by the epidemiological surveys. With surveys, the exact data of fall patterns can not been acquired. In this paper, we measured and analyzed with the parameters related to fall pattern such as velocities and accelerations during the motion of falls using 3D motion capture program. We acquired the parameters of the fall pattern of intentional and unexpected fall. The result showed that the variation of velocity and acceleration during fall was very important in characterizing fall pattern, which of vital importance for the development of a fracture prevention system and for the safety of the elderly.
The fracture behaviors of Zr-based bulk amorphous metals(BAMs) having compositions of $Zr_{55}Al_{10}Ni_{5}Cu_{30}$, were investigated under impact loading and quasi-static conditions. For experiments, a newly devised instrumented impact testing apparatus and the subsize Charpy specimens were used. The influences of loading rate and the notch shape on the fracture behavior of the Zr-based BAM were examined. The Zr-based BAMs showed an elastic deformation behavior without any plastic deformation on it before fracture. Most fracture energies were absorbed in the process of the crack initiation. The maximum load and fracture absorbed energy under quasi-static condition were larger than those under impact condition. However, there existed relatively insignificant notch shape effect. Fracture surfaces under impact loading were smoother than those under quasi-static loading. The absorbed fracture energy appeared differently depending on the extent of the vein-like pattern region due to the shear bands developed at the notch tip. It can be found that the fracture energy of the Zr-Al-Ni-Cu alloy is closely related with the development of shear bands during fracture.
