In order to Improve the fracture toughness of epoxy resin system, liquid chloroprene rubber(LCR) and liquid butadiene rubber (LBR) which have hydroxy group were used in the brittle epoxy system. Mechanical and toughness characterization of the modified epoxy resins were investigated as a function of liquid rubbers content. Epoxy resins modified with both of the liquid rubbers showed complete phase-separation microstructure : In all of the LCR content, it was observed that the domain size of LCR dispersed in the epoxy matrix ranging from $2{\mu}m\;to\;5{\mu}m$. It was found that fracture toughness, $K_{ic}$, of the modified LCR system was enhanced continuously as increasing LCR content. However around 10phr of LBR system showed maximum fracture toughness. Specifically, when BPA add to the modified LCR system, thermal and mechanical properties increased than neat epoxy. At the same time, fracture toughness was enhanced.
Geological structures such as fault and fracture patterns provide important information about preliminary exploration of mineralized areas and geological characterization. We apply a filtering method taking the sun's azimuth angle into account to a shaded relief image derived from a digital elevation model (DEM), by which even linear edges extending parallel to the sun direction can be effectively extracted. Then, Generalized Hough tranform is applied to extract lineanments which correspond to fault and fracture patterns.
Interfacial fracture toughness under various mixed-mode loading is measured to provide a mixed-mode fracture criterion of a composite/metal bonded joint. Experimental fracture characterization tests were carried out using a SLB (single leg bending) specimen, which controls mode ratio with the specimen thickness. The experimental result of the SLB test conforms that interfacial fracture toughness increases as the mode II component increases. The effect of loading mode on interfacial crack growth is investigated on the basis of crack path observation using microscopic image acquisition technique. The influence of interfacial roughness on adhesion strength is also discussed.

In recent years, the importance of the characterization of fall for a fracture prevention system keeps increasing since fracture from a fall can lead to serious health problems. Fall is one of the major sources which increase morbidity in elderly people. In terms of the cost and the influence to the quality of life, the most serious injury with hip fractures is caused by falls. The traditional methods in characterizing fall patterns have been mainly by the epidemiological surveys. With surveys, the exact data of fall patterns can not been acquired. In this paper, we measured and analyzed with the parameters related to fall pattern such as velocities and accelerations during the motion of falls using 3D motion capture program. We acquired the parameters of the fall pattern of intentional and unexpected fall. The result showed that the variation of velocity and acceleration during fall was very important in characterizing fall pattern, which of vital importance for the development of a fracture prevention system and for the safety of the elderly.

In this study, the classical J2 flow theory is explicitly proved to be inappropriate to describe the plastic behaviour of structural steels under different stress states according to the reported test results. A numerical framework of the characterization of the strain hardening and ductile fracture initiation involving the effect of stress states, i.e., stress triaxiality and Lode angle parameter, is proposed based on the mechanical response of structural steels under monotonic loading. Both effects on strain hardening are determined by correction functions, which are implemented as different modules in the numerical framework. Thus, other users can easily modify them according to their test results. Besides, the ductile fracture initiation is determined by a fracture locus in the space of stress triaxiality, Lode angle parameter, and fracture strain. The numerical implementation of the proposed model and the corresponding code are provided in this paper, which are also available on GitHub. The validity of the numerical procedure is examined through single element tests and the accuracy of the proposed model is verified by existing test results.
This study explores a new energy partitioning approach to determine the fracture toughness of 3-D printed pristine/recycled high density polyethylene (HDPE) blends employing the essential work of fracture (EWF) concept. The traditional EWF approach conducts a uniaxial tensile test with double-edge notched tensile (DENT) specimens and measures the total energy defined by the area under a load-displacement curve until failure. The approach assumes that the entire total energy contributes to the fracture process only. This assumption is generally true for extruded polymers that fracture occurs in a material body. In contrast to the traditional extrusion manufacturing process, the current 3-D printing technique employs fused deposition modeling (FDM) that produces layer-by-layer structured specimens. This type of specimen tends to include separation energy even after the complete failure of specimens when the fracture test is conducted. The separation is not relevant to the fracture process, and the raw experimental data are likely to possess random variation or noise during fracture testing. Therefore, the current EWF approach may not be suitable for the fracture characterization of 3-D printed specimens. This paper proposed a new energy partitioning approach to exclude the irrelevant energy of the specimens caused by their intrinsic structural issues. The approach determined the energy partitioning location based on experimental data and observations. Results prove that the new approach provided more consistent results with a higher coefficient of correlation.

Loss of fracture resistance due to thermal aging degradation is a potential limiting factor affecting the long-term (80+ year) viability of nuclear reactors. To evaluate the effects of decades of aging in a practical time frame, accelerated aging must be employed prior to mechanical characterization. In this study, a variety of chemically and microstructurally diverse austenitic stainless steels were aged between 0 and 30,000 h at 290-400 ℃ to simulate 0-80+ years of operation. Over 600 static fracture tests were carried out between room temperature and 400 ℃. The results presented include selected J-R curves of each material as well as K0.2mm fracture toughness values mapped against aging condition and ferrite content in order to display any trends related to those variables. Results regarding differences in processing, optimal ferrite content under light aging, and the relationship between test temperature and Mo content were observed. Overall, it was found that both the ferrite volume fraction and molybdenum content had significant effects on thermal degradation susceptibility. It was determined that materials with >25 vol% ferrite are unlikely to be viable for 80 years, particularly if they have high Mo contents (>2 wt%), while materials less than 15 vol% ferrite are viable regardless of Mo content.
The coating cracking on a substrate system was analyzed using a fracture mechanics approach. Multiple cracking in the bending configuration was analyzed using a variational mechanics approach to fracture mechanics of coatin $g_strate system. The strain energy release rate on bending geometry developed permits the prediction of crack growth in the coating layer on a substrate. Also, it can be used appropriately to the characterization of multiple cracking of coating. The obtained critical strain energy release rate (in-situ fracture toughness) will be a material property of coating and it will provide a better insight into coating cracking.ng.
The tension behavior of Nicalon/CAS glass-ceramic matrix composites was investigated. Infrared (IR) thermography was employed for two different types of $Nicalon^{TM}/CAS$ composites, i.e., cross-ply and unidirectional specimens. During tensile testing, an IR camera was used for in-situ monitoring of progressive damages of $Nicalon^{TM}/CAS$ samples. The IR camera provided the temperature changes during tensile testing. Microstructural characterization using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to investigate the fracture mechanisms of $Nicalon^{TM}/CAS$ composites. In this investigation, the thermographic NDE technique was used to facilitate a better understanding of the fracture mechanisms of the $Nicalon^{TM}/CAS$ composites during tensile testing.
Fracture toughness characterization in the transition region is examined for heat-treated and ionnitrided Ni-Cr-Mo steel. After heat treatment for the specimens of Ni-Cr-Mo steel, organizations of specimens-specimens which are heat-treated and ion-nitrided for 4 hours at 500 .deg. C and 5 torr in 25%N/dub 2/-75%H/sub 2/mixed gas-, hardness variety, and X-ray diffraction pattern of the ion-nitriding compound layer are observed. Fracture toughenss test of unloading compliance method were conducted over the regions from room trmperature to -70.deg. C. The compound layer was consisted of r'=Fe/sub 4/N phase and ion-nitrided layer's depth was 200mm from surface. The transition regions of heat-treated and ion-nitrided specimens were about -30.deg. C and -50.deg. C, respectively. The transition region of ion-nitrided specimens is estimated less than that of heat-treated one, and this is the effect of ion-nitriding.
