  • In this article, the dynamic fracture instability characteristics, including dynamic crack propagation and crack branching, in PMMA brittle solids under dynamic loading are investigated using the discrete element method (DEM) simulations. The microscopic parameters in DEM are first calibrated using the comparison with the previous experimental results not only in the field of qualitative analysis, but also in the field of quantitative analysis. The calibrating process illustrates that the selected microscopic parameters in DEM are suitable to effectively and accurately simulate dynamic fracture process in PMMA brittle solids subjected to dynamic loads. The typical dynamic fracture behaviors of solids under dynamic loading are then reproduced by DEM. Compared with the previous experimental and numerical results, the present numerical results are in good agreement with the existing ones not only in the field of qualitative analysis, but also in the field of quantitative analysis. Furthermore, effects of dynamic loading magnitude, offset distance of the initial crack and initial crack length on dynamic fracture behaviors are numerically discussed.

  • The cryogenic fracture behaviors of austenitic stainless steel HN2 developed for nuclear fusion reactor were evaluated quantitatively by using the small punch(SP) test. The electrochemical polarization test was applied to study thermal aging degradation of HN2 steel. The X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis was conducted to detect carbides and nitrides precipitated on the grain boundary of the heat treated HN2 steel. The mechanical properties of the HN2 steel significantly decreased with increasing time and temperature of heat treatment or with decreasing testing temperature. The integrated charge(Q) obtained from electrochemical polarization test showed a good correlation with the SP energy(ESP) obtained by means of SP tests. From the results observed in the x-ray diffraction and anodic polarization curve, it was known that the material the grain boundary. Combining SP test and electrochemical polarization test, it could be useful tools to non-destructively evaluate the cryogenic fracture behaviors and the aging degradation for cryogenic structural material.

  • $SiC_f$/SiC composites with whiskers and pyrolytic carbon (PyC) coated whiskers in the matrix were fabricated for enhancement of the fracture behaviors by the whisker growing assisted chemical vapor infiltration (WA-CVI) process, respectively. $SiC_f$/SiC composites were also prepared by the conventional CVI process as reference material. The mechanical properties and fracture behaviors were analyzed by comparison of the two types of composites prepared by WA-CVI and conventional CVI. The densities of $SiC_f$/SiC composites were in the range of $2.6{\sim}2.65g/cm^3$. The flexural strengths of composite with whiskers and with those coated by PyC were 650 MPa and 600 MPa, respectively. The tensile strength of composites with whiskers was ${\sim}285$ MPa.

  • The fracture behaviors of Zr-based bulk amorphous metals(BAMs) having compositions of $Zr_{55}Al_{10}Ni_{5}Cu_{30}$, were investigated under impact loading and quasi-static conditions. For experiments, a newly devised instrumented impact testing apparatus and the subsize Charpy specimens were used. The influences of loading rate and the notch shape on the fracture behavior of the Zr-based BAM were examined. The Zr-based BAMs showed an elastic deformation behavior without any plastic deformation on it before fracture. Most fracture energies were absorbed in the process of the crack initiation. The maximum load and fracture absorbed energy under quasi-static condition were larger than those under impact condition. However, there existed relatively insignificant notch shape effect. Fracture surfaces under impact loading were smoother than those under quasi-static loading. The absorbed fracture energy appeared differently depending on the extent of the vein-like pattern region due to the shear bands developed at the notch tip. It can be found that the fracture energy of the Zr-Al-Ni-Cu alloy is closely related with the development of shear bands during fracture.

  • Fracture behaviors of pipes with local wall thinning are very important for the integrity of nuclear power plant. In pipes of energy plants, sometimes, the local wall thinning may result from severe erosion-corrosion (E/C) damage. However, the effects of local wall thinning on strength and fracture behaviors of piping system were not well studied. In this paper, the monotonic bending tests were performed of full-scale welded and unwelded carbon steel pipes with local wall thinning. A monotonic bending load was applied to straight pipe specimens by four-point loading at ambient temperature without internal pressure. The observed failure modes were divided into four types; ovalization, crack initiation/growth after ovalization, local buckling and crack initiation/growth after local buckling. Also, the strengths of welded and unwelded piping system with local wall thinning were evaluated.

  • Fracture behaviors of pipes with local wall thinning are very important for the integrity of nuclear power plant. However, effects of local wall thinning on strength and fracture behaviors of piping system were not well studied. Acoustic emission(AE) has been widely used in various fields because of its extreme sensitivity, dynamic detection ability and location of growing defects. In this study, we investigated failure modes of locally wall thinned pipes and AE signals by bending test. From test results, we could be divided four types of failure modes of ovalization, crack initiation after ovalization, local buckling and crack initiation after local buckling. And fracture behaviors such as elastic region, yielding region, plastic deformation region and crack progress region could be evaluated by AE counts, accumulative counts and time-frequency analysis during bending test. The result of the frequency range is expected to be basic data that can inspect plants in real-time.

  • The fracture toughness and crack propagation behaviors of short nylon66 fiber reinforced Chloroprene rubber nave been Investigated as functions of fiber aspect ratio, fiber content and interphase conditions. The J for crack initiation and rupture were determined for short-fiber reinforced rubber. The values of $J_c$ for most reinforced rubbers were low compared that of matrix. But, $J_r$ at rupture showed a higher value than that of matrix. The crack propagation behaviors were analyzed into 3 patterns with increasing fiber aspect ratio and fiber content. The tearing mechanisms of matrix and fiber reinforced rubber were observed by CCD camera focused on the tip of crack and load-displacement graph. Both cases showed a completely different behaviors

  • The ob.jective of this study is to determine fracture behaviors(penetrati0n modes) and resistance to penetration duringballistic impact of Al 5052-H34 alloy laminates and anodized Al 5052-H34 alloy laminates. Resistance to penetration is determined by $V_{50}$ ballistic limit, a statical velocity with 50% probability for complete penetration, test method. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by penetration modes, are respectfully observed that result from V50 test and Projectile Through Plates (PTP) test at velocities greater than $V_{50}$. PTP tests were conducted with 0" obliquity at room temperature using 5.56mm ball projectile. $V_{50}$ tests with 0" obliquity at room temperature were conducted with projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete penetration during PTP tests. Surface Hardness, resistance to penetration, and penetration modes of A1 5052-H34 alloy laminates compared to those of anodized Al 5052-H34 alloy laminates.y laminates.

  • The coupled hydro-mechanical loading conditions commonly occur in the geothermal and petroleum engineering projects, which is significantly important influence on the stability of rock masses. In this article, the influence of flaw inclination angle of fracture behaviors in rock-like materials subjected to both mechanical loads and internal hydraulic pressures is experimentally studied using the 3-D X-ray computed tomography combined with 3-D reconstruction techniques. Triaxial compression experiments under confining pressure of 8.0 MPa are first conducted for intact rock-like specimens using a rock mechanics testing system. Four pre-flawed rock-like specimens containing a single open flaw with different inclination angle under the coupled hydro-mechanical loading conditions are carried out. Then, the broken pre-flawed rock-like specimens are analyzed using a 3-D X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning system. Subsequently, the internal damage behaviors of failed pre-flawed rock-like specimens are evaluated by the 3-D reconstruction techniques, according to the horizontal and vertical cross-sectional CT images. The present experimental does not only focus on the mechanical responses, but also pays attentions to the internal fracture characteristics of rock-like materials under the coupled hydro-mechanical loading conditions. The conclusion remarks are significant for predicting the rock instability in geothermal and unconventional petroleum engineering.
