The most controversial topics in plasma sprayed ceramic coating system are recently mechanical properties such as bond strength, cohesive strength, toughness and so on. Determination of bond strength of coatings is one of the most important problems. In the industry, the bond strength of coating system has been estimated by Pull-off test(ASTM standard C633-79). But, without a fixed jig and specimen, it is impossible to obtain the bond strength. Therefore, it is necessary to study the critical fracture load on interface of the coating by indentation test. Because the critical fracture load plays an important role in evaluating the bond strength for plasma sprayed ceramic coating system. So, we have estimated critical fracture load in plasma sprayed ceramic coating system, and it was shown that inverse relationship between the cross-section hardness of coating and the critical fracture load(Pc). In case of the high load(1kgf, 2kgf) in $Al_{2}O_{3}+13%TiO_{2}$, it was found that the critical point(Pco), which the coating was broken on.
The effect of heat treating temperature and ${\alpha}$ phase In the ${\beta}$ phase matrix were investigated for ${\beta}-CuZnAl$ shape memory alloys by tension test, fatigue test, and shape memory effect test. After heat treatment at $677^{\circ}C$, $750^{\circ}C$, $800^{\circ}C$ and $850^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. respectively, static fracture stress(${\sigma}_f$), fatigue fracture stress(${\tau}_{max}$) at $10^6$ cycle, and elongation(${\epsilon}_f$) was $24.2kg/mm^2$, $17.21kg/mm^2$ and 11.8%, respectively. As heat treating temperature decreased, fracture surfaces of the specimens were changed from the intergranular to the transgranular fracture mode. Especially, the a phase precipitated in the ${\beta}$ phase matrix had an effect on crack propagation and the fracture surface was characterized by dimple-like pattern when crack propagated in transgranular cracking mode. Precipitation of the ${\alpha}$ phase in the ${\beta}$ phase matrix lowered the transformation temperature by $10^{\circ}C$, and about 2.5 vol.% ${\alpha}$ phase did not affect the shape memory effect examined by the bending test.
The demands of high-strength steel have been steadily increased to reduce the weight of vehicles. Although the TRIP steel has been the promising candidate material for the purpose, high strength hinders the application due to the susceptibility to hydrogen delayed fracture in the corrosive environment. Moreover, the testing method was not specified in the ISO standards. In this work, the test method to evaluate the susceptibility of hydrogen delayed fracture was studied by slow strain rate testing technique. The four test experimental parameters were studied : strain rate, hydrogen charging time, holding time after hydrogen charging, and holding time after cadmium plating. The steel was fractured by hydrogen in case the strain rate was in the range of $1{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}5{\times}10^{-7}/sec$. It was confirmed that the slow strain rate test is effective method to evaluate the susceptibility to hydrogen delayed fracture. The holding time over 24 hrs after hydrogen charging, nullified the hydrogen effect, that is, the specimen was no more susceptible to hydrogen after 24 hrs even though the specimen was fully hydrogen-charged. Moreover, cadmium electroplating could not prevent from diffusing out the hydrogen from the steel in the experiment. The effective experimental procedures were discussed.
The instrumented Charpy impact test is generally used to evaluate the dynamic fracture toughnesses for varying engineering materials. However, the test is known to be difficult to evaluate the dynamic fracturetoughnesses for very brittle materials because of the small crack initiation load which may be engulfed by the inertia load of the instrumented tup. To evaluate the dynamic fracture toughnesses of very brittle materials, such as chalk or plaster,it is thus, necessary to develop a load sensitive instrumented tup. In this study, a polymer tup, which has very small Young's modulus comparing to one of the conventional steel tup, is used for the instrumented Charpy impact test, and a proper testing method to evaluate the dynamic fracture behavior of very brittle materials is developed. The results show that the developed method can measure rapidly changing loads from the moment of contact between the tup and the specimen to dynamic crack initiation of the very brittle materials.
As one step for the safety performance of LNG storage tank, the change in fracture toughness within the X-grooved weld heat-affected zone (HAZ) of newly developed 9% Ni steel, which was submerged arc (SA)-welded, was investigated. Both crack initiation fracture toughness and crack arrest fracture toughness were evaluated by the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) tests and compact crack arrest (CCA) tests. As the evaluated region approached the fusion line, each test result shorted different tendency, that is, crack initiation toughness decreased while crack arrest toughness increased. The results were discussed through the observation of the microstructural change.
The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of temperature on the results of Charpy impact test for glass fiber reinforced polyurethane(GF/PUR) composites. The Charpy impact test were conducted in the temperature range from -50$^{\circ}$ to 50$^{\circ}$. The impact fracture toughness of GF/PUR composites was considerably affected by temperature and it was shown that the maximum value was appeared at room temperature. It is believed that sensitivity of notch on impact fracture energy were increased with decrease in temperature of specimen. As the GF/PUR composites exposed in low temperature, impact fracture toughness of composites decreased gradually owing to the decrease of interface bonding strength caused by difference of thermal expansion coefficient between the glass fiber/polyurethane resin. And decrease of interface bonding strength of composites with decrease in specimen temperature was ascertained by SEM photographs of Charpy impact fracture surface.
This paper presents a comparative study on the double-K fracture parameters of concrete obtained using four existing analytical methods such as Gauss-Chebyshev integral method, simplified Green's function method, weight function method and simplified equivalent cohesive force method. Two specimen geometries: three point bend test and compact tension specimen for sizes 100-500 mm at initial notch length to depth ratios 0.25 and 0.4 are used for the comparative study. The required input parameters for determining the double-K fracture parameters are derived from the developed fictitious crack model. It is found that the cohesive toughness and initial cracking toughness determined using weight function method and simplified equivalent cohesive force method agree well with those obtained using Gauss-Chebyshev integral method whereas these fracture parameters determined using simplified Green's function method deviates more than by 11% and 20% respectively as compared with those obtained using Gauss-Chebyshev integral method. It is also shown that all the fracture parameters related with double-K model are size dependent.

In this study, the classical J2 flow theory is explicitly proved to be inappropriate to describe the plastic behaviour of structural steels under different stress states according to the reported test results. A numerical framework of the characterization of the strain hardening and ductile fracture initiation involving the effect of stress states, i.e., stress triaxiality and Lode angle parameter, is proposed based on the mechanical response of structural steels under monotonic loading. Both effects on strain hardening are determined by correction functions, which are implemented as different modules in the numerical framework. Thus, other users can easily modify them according to their test results. Besides, the ductile fracture initiation is determined by a fracture locus in the space of stress triaxiality, Lode angle parameter, and fracture strain. The numerical implementation of the proposed model and the corresponding code are provided in this paper, which are also available on GitHub. The validity of the numerical procedure is examined through single element tests and the accuracy of the proposed model is verified by existing test results.
In this study, intrinsic static/dynamic fracture toughness of Al 7175-T74 are evaluated from the apparent static/dynamic toughness of notched specimen. The notch/crack critical average stress fracture model is suggested to establish the relationship to predict the intrinsic fracture toughness from the apparent fracture toughness of a notched specimen. The notch/crack critical average stress fracture model is established using the relation between the notch root radius and the effective distance calculated by finite element analysis. It is conclude that the true fracture toughness can be estimated from test results of apparent fracture toughness measured by using a notched specimen. Also, critical notch root radius can be predicted by notch/crack critical average stress fracture model.

It is important to obtain reasonable predictions of the extent of the damage during maritime accidents such as ship collisions and groundings. Many fracture models based on different mechanical backgrounds have been proposed and can be used to estimate the extent of damage involving ductile fracture. The goal of this study was to compare the damage extents provided by some selected fracture models. Instead of performing a new series of material constant calibration tests, the fracture test results for the ship building steel EH36 obtained by Park et al. (2019) were used which included specimens with different geometries such as central hole, pure shear, and notched tensile specimens. The test results were compared with seven ductile fracture surfaces: Johnson-Cook, Cockcroft-Latham-Oh, Bai-Wierzbicki, Modified Mohr-Coulomb, Lou-Huh, Maximum shear stress, and Hosford-Coulomb. The linear damage accumulation law was applied to consider the effect of the loading path on each fracture surface. The Swift-Voce combined constitutive model was used to accurately define the flow stress in a large strain region. The reliability of these simulations was verified by the good agreement between the axial tension force elongation relations captured from the tests and simulations without fracture assignment. The material constants corresponding to each fracture surface were calibrated using an optimization technique with the minimized object function of the residual sum of errors between the simulated and predicted stress triaxiality and load angle parameter values to fracture initiation. The reliabilities of the calibrated material constants of B-W, MMC, L-H, and HC were the best, whereas there was a high residual sum of errors in the case of the MMS, C-L-O, and J-C models. The most accurate fracture predictions for the fracture specimens were made by the B-W, MMC, L-H, and HC models.
