  • Fully dense THCN) based carbonitride ceramics were fabricated by pressureless sintering. During sintering, solid solutions were formed from the ceramic ingredients. The ceramics exhibited microvickers hardness of 1560-2050kgf/mm2, fracture toughness of 3.0-5.4 MPa $m^(1/2)$, and three point flexural strength of 645-1072 MPa. Some of the ceramics were shaped in a cutting tool, and the cutting performance was evaluated. In case of cutting SCM440 alloy steel, the ceramics showed better performance than the commercially available alumina-titanium carbide ceramic cutting tool. Considering the excellent productivity of pressureless sintering compared with other densification methods and their cutting performance, this new class of ceramics are very promising for wear resistant applications.

  • As one step for the safety performance of LNG storage tank, the change in fracture toughness within the X-grooved weld heat-affected zone (HAZ) of newly developed 9% Ni steel, which was submerged arc (SA)-welded, was investigated. Both crack initiation fracture toughness and crack arrest fracture toughness were evaluated by the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) tests and compact crack arrest (CCA) tests. As the evaluated region approached the fusion line, each test result shorted different tendency, that is, crack initiation toughness decreased while crack arrest toughness increased. The results were discussed through the observation of the microstructural change.

  • Kinds, shapes and fraction ratios of fibers have influence on properties of HPFRCC(High-Performance Fiver Reinforced Cementitious Concrete) like bending strength, strain capacity and fracture toughness. For example, hydrophilic fibers have different chemical bond strength from hydrophobic fibers, fiber shapes influence on fiber pull-out and rupture, and fiber volume fraction influence on bending strength. In this study, to estimate influences of kinds, shapes and fraction ratios of fibers, we make HFRCC with 3 kind of fiber in various volume fraction of fiber and compare cracking, bending strength and fracture toughness. As the results, bending strength of HPFRCC was increased as fiber volume fraction was increase and fiber tensile strength was increase, and strain capacity and fracture toughness of HFRCC was higher in fiber pull-out fracture than in fiber rupture fracture. And HFRCC showing pseudo strain hardening has higher fiber reinforce efficiency than others.

  • The purpose of this work is to predict ductile fracture of structural steel under extremely low cyclic loading experienced in earthquake. A cumulative damage model is proposed on the basis of an existing damage model originally aiming to predict fracture under monotonic loading. The cumulative damage model assumes that damage does not grow when stress triaxiality is below a threshold and fracture occurs when accumulated damage reach unit. The model was implemented in ABAQUS software. The cumulative damage model parameters for steel base metal, weld metal and heat affected zone were calibrated, respectively, through testing and finite element analyses of notched coupon specimens. The damage evolution law in the notched coupon specimens under different loads was compared. Finally, in order to examine the engineering applicability of the proposed model, the fracture performance of beam-column welded joints reported by previous researches was analyzed based on the cumulative damage model. The analysis results show that the cumulative damage model is able to successfully predict the cracking location, fracture process, the crack initiation life, and the total fatigue life of the joints.

  • In this study, carbon fiber/epoxy (CF/EP) composites were interleaved with aramid nonwoven veils with an areal weight density of $8.5g/m^2$ to improve their Mode-I fracture toughness. The control and aramid interleaved CF/EP composite laminates were manufactured by VARTM in a [0]4 configuration. Tensile, three-point bending, compression, interlaminar shear, Charpy impact and Mode-I (DCB) fracture toughness values were determined to evaluate the effects of aramid nonwoven fabrics on the mechanical performance of the CF/EP composites. Thermomechanical behavior of the specimens was investigated by Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA). The results showed that the propagation Mode-I fracture toughness values of CF/EP composites can be significantly improved (by about 72%) using aramid nonwoven fabrics. It was found that the main extrinsic toughening mechanism is aramid microfiber bridging acting behind the crack-tip. The incorporation of these nonwovens also increased interlaminar shear and Charpy impact strength by 10 and 16.5%, respectively. Moreover, it was revealed that the damping ability of the composites increased with the incorporation of aramid nonwoven fabrics in the interlaminar region of composites. On the other hand, they caused a reduction in in-plane mechanical properties due to the reduced carbon fiber volume fraction, increased thickness and void formation in the composites.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of diffusion-weighted steady-state free precession (DW-SSFP) in comparison to diffusion-weighted echo-planar imaging (DW-EPI) for differentiating the neoplastic and benign osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. Materials and Methods: The subjects were 40 patients with recent vertebral compression fractures but no history of vertebroplasty, spine operation, or chemotherapy. They had received 3-Tesla (T) spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including both DW-SSFP and DW-EPI sequences. The 40 patients included 20 with neoplastic vertebral fracture and 20 with benign osteoporotic vertebral fracture. In each fracture lesion, we obtained the signal intensity normalized by the signal intensity of normal bone marrow (SI norm) on DW-SSFP and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) on DW-EPI. The correlation between the SI norm and the ADC in each lesion was analyzed using linear regression. The optimal cut-off values for the diagnosis of neoplastic fracture were determined in each sequence using Youden's J statistics and receiver operating characteristic curve analyses. Results: In the neoplastic fracture, the median SI norm on DW-SSFP was higher and the median ADC on DW-EPI was lower than the benign osteoporotic fracture (5.24 vs. 1.30, P = 0.032, and 0.86 vs. 1.48, P = 0.041, respectively). Inverse linear correlations were evident between SI norm and ADC in both neoplastic and benign osteoporotic fractures (r = -0.45 and -0.61, respectively). The optimal cut-off values for diagnosis of neoplastic fracture were SI norm of 3.0 in DW-SSFP with the sensitivity and specificity of 90.4% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 81.0-99.0) and 95.3% (95% CI: 90.0-100.0), respectively, and ADC of 1.3 in DW-EPI with the sensitivity and specificity of 90.5% (95% CI: 80.0-100.0) and 70.4% (95% CI: 60.0-80.0), respectively. Conclusion: In 3-T MRI, DW-SSFP has comparable sensitivity and specificity to DW-EPI in differentiating the neoplastic vertebral fracture from the benign osteoporotic vertebral fracture.

  • The polymer composites contain numerous internal boundaries and its structural elements have different responses and different resistances under the same service environment. Fatigue phenomenon is much more complex in composites than homogeneous materials. An understanding of the fracture behavior of polymer composite materials subjected to constant and cyclic loading is necessary for predicting the life time of structures fabricated with polymers. There is a need to acquire a better understanding of the fatigue performance and failure mechanisms of composites under such conditions. Therefore, in this study the analyses of fiber orientation and fracture mechanism for low cycle fatigue crack have been studied by SEM and LM for observing the ultrathin sections.

  • In this study, the fracture behavior of a thermoplastic-modified epoxy resin reinforced with continuous carbon fibers for two levels of fiber-matrix adhesion was performed. A carbon fiber with commercial sizing was used and also treated with a known silane, (3-glycidoxy propyl trimethoxysilane) coupling agent. Toughness was determined using the double cantilever test, together with surface analysis after failure using scanning electron microscope. The presence of polysulfone particles improved the fracture behavior of the composite, but fiber-matrix adhesion seemed to play a very important role in the performance of the composite material. There appeared to be a synergy between the matrix modifier and the fiber-matrix adhesion coupling agent.

  • The objective in this study was investigated temperature susceptibility and low temperature fracture of rubber modified asphalt. A chlorinated polyethylene elastomer, Tyrin CM0730, was added to 200/300 grade asphalt with 3.0 and 5.0wt% to improve campatibility. The elastomer modified asphalts were analyzed for temperature susceptibility relating to penetration index(PI) and penetration-viscosity number(PVN) as well as low temperature fracture relating to fracture energy $(G_{IC})$. These indices were obtained from the measurements of penetration, viscosity, failure load and modulus. The addition of small amounts of elastomer to the asphalt resulted in a significant increase of both the PI and PVN over an unmodified asphalt. Also, the fracture energy increased with the addition of elastomer to asphalt. These significant improvement at both the high and low temperature result in enhanced performance.
