Antimutagenic and antioxidative activities in the different milling fraction of rice(Oryza sativa L., illpumbyeo) were investigated. Twelve milling fractions including embryo, bran(I, II, III, IV and all) and milled rice(I, II, III, IV and V) and were obtained by abrasive milling. Antimutagenic effects of milling fraction against Trp-P-2-induced mutagenicity were shown as ${\approx}0%$ for embryo fraction, $27{\sim}86%$ for bran fractions and $64{\sim}95%$ for milled rice fractions in salmonela typhimurium reversion assay. Milled rice V, inner fraction with 80.9% milling yields, showed the highest antimutagenic activity among milling fractions Antioxidative activity, measured by peroxide value(POV) of different milling fractions was higher in embryo(28%) and bran fractions ($25{\sim}34%)$ than milled rice fractions($6{\sim}22%)$. In terms of thiobarbituric acid(TBA). embryo. bran and milled rice fractions exhibited 14, $5{\sim}21\;and \;6{\sim}20%$ antioxidative activity, respectively. Antioxidative activity, measured by electron donating ability(EDA), was 45% for embryo fraction. $35{\sim}40%$ for bran fractions and $41{\sim}65%$ for milled rice fractions. Antimutagenic activity if milling fractions was correlated with POV (r=-0.471, p<0.01) and EDA (r = 0.609, p<0.001) but not correlated with TBA. Contents of total phenolic acid and SH were higher in bran and embryo fractions than in milled rice fractions, and were reversely correlated with antimutagenic activity (r=-0.523 and -0.451. respectively, p<0.05).
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of ginseng extracts and their fractions on the 9rowth of Escherichia coli and its glucose consumption. Considerable amount of impurities such as sugar, Protein, lipids and minerals other than saponins were contained in n-butanol extracts which are generally referred to be crude saponins. Sucrose and maltose were contained as major sugars In ginseng extracts and their water soluble fractions. Arginine and potassium were also contained as major amino acid and mineral in those fractions, respectively. Though the glucose consumption and growth of Escherichia coli were enhanced by ginseng extracts and their water soluble fractions those were retarded by ether soluble fractions and n-butanol fractions.

This study was designed to analyze the effects of methanol extracts and solvent fractions of the young branch of Prunus persica on scavenging activity of ROS, RNS and inhibiting activity of oxidative modification in human LDL induced by copper ion or free radical generator. The scavenging capacities of the fractions on DPPH radical, superoxide radical, nitric oxide and peroxynitrite were exhibited the highest in ethylacetate fraction, followed by butanol fraction. In the copper-induced LDL oxidative modification system, the highest antioxidant activity was revealed in ethylacetate fraction, and butanol fraction exhibited a similar activity. However, solvent fractions of the young branch of Prunus persica showed a relatively low antioxidant activity in the AAPH-mediated LDL oxidation. In addition, ethylacetate and butanol fractions also inhibited the copper-mediated LDL oxidation in the REM assay, which was comparable to that of the positive controls, including EDTA, ascorbic acid and BHT. Futhermore, a content of total phenolics in these two fractions was higher than that of the other fractions. These results indicated that ethylacetate and butanol fractions of the young branch of Prunus persica were useful for the prevention of the free radical- or metal ion-induced oxidative damages.
A study was conducted on four maize cultivars to determine the dry matter and fibre digestibility as influenced by advancing plant age. Samples of maize cultivars Akbar, Neelum, UM-81 and IZ-31 were harvested at weekly intervals/ growth stages. The samples of morphological fractions such as leaf and stem were also collected at various growth stages. Whole mixed fodder and different fractions of maize plant were analysed for their chemical composition and in vitro digestibility. The results showed that in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of whole maize plant, leaf and stem decreased significantly with advancing stage of maturity. Digestibility of NDF, ADF, hemicellulose and cellulose decreased significantly in all plant parts with advancing plant age/growth stages. Maximum values for the digestibility of dry matter and various cell wall constituents were observed in leaf, followed by whole plant and stem fractions. Cultivars were observed to have significant effect of IVDMD and digestibility of NDF, ADF and cellulose in all plant fractions. The results indicated that digestibility of maize fodder was affected by stage of maturity and cultivars. However, maturity had a greater effect on digestibility in all plant fractions than did cultivars. Dry matter contents were found to be significantly and negatively correlated with IVDMD of whole plant and its leaf and stem fractions. Based on correlations, regression equations were computed to predict IVDMD.

Doenjang(fermented soybean paste) was prepared by the series of processes including soaking, cooking, first fermentation(3 days at 30$\pm$2$^{\circ}C$) for the preparation of meju(soybean koji) after inoclulation of Aspergillus oryzae, and further fermentation (60 days at 30$\pm$2$^{\circ}C$) for the ripening after addition of salt 13% to meju. the crude phenolics extracted from defatted soybean and doenjang were fractionated onto the neutral phenolics(isofavonoids) and acidic phenolics(phenolic acids), respectively. Composition and antioxidative characteristics of phenolic fractions were determined. The neutral phenolic fractions contained genistin, genistein and daidzein; on the other hand, acidic phenolic fractions had syringic acid and seven other components. The content of genistin in doenjang dramatically decreased at the early stage of fermentation, whereas the content of genistein rather increased. In addition, the content of syringic acid of acidic phenolic fractions were increased during fermentation. These changes in individual phenolic components affected the antioxidative activity of neutral phenolics or acidic phenolics. antioxidative activity of phenolic compounds were evaluated during soybean fermentation. The antioxidative and free radical scavenging activity of neutral phenolic fractions and acidic phenolic fractions on linoleic acid autoxidation were also investigated.

Raphiolepis indica (R. indica) is one of evergreen shrubs belonging to the Rosaceae and is grown wildly in Jeju. This study was performed to evaluate the hepatoprotective effect of different fractions (n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, butanol, water) from R. indica. Anti-oxidative effects were determined using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity and total phenol contents. Hepatoprotective effect was identified by 3-[4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay in Huh7 cells. Among various fractions, ethyl acetate and butanol fractions showed the lowest DPPH remained rate reaching approximately 78.7 and 65.5% at $400{\mu}g/mL$. Ethyl acetate and butanol fractions showed the total phenolic content at 164.5 and 137.3 mg GAE/g extract. The ethyl acetate and butanol fractions were resistant against oxidative stress in MTT assay and showed higher hepatoprotective effect than other fractions. Therefore, these results suggest that the ethyl acetate and butanol fractions of R. indica might have therapeutic value in liver damage.

Five varieties of napiergrasses (Pennisetum purpureum) were fractionated botanically into leaf blade, leaf sheath, stem and head. Chemical composition of each of whole napiergrass and their botanical fractions were determined. Correlation, linear and multiple regressions between botanical fractions and nutritive value of varieties of napiergrass were also estimated. All botanical fractions differed due to the effect of variety. Napier Pusha contained the highest proportion of leaf blade and internode, but the lowest proportion of leaf sheath. Napier Hybrid contained the lowest proportion of leaf blade, but highest proportion of node. Consequently, napier Pusha contained the highest (p<0.01) crude protein (CP, 9.0%), but Napier Hybrid had the lowest CP (7.0%). Chemical composition of whole plant differed significantly (p<0.01; except NFE, p>0.05) due to the variety. Not only the whole plant, chemical composition of most botanical fractions of whole plant differed (p<0.05 to 0.01) due to the variety. The intrarelationships between leaf blade and leaf sheath was negative (r=-0.43). Leaf sheath was also negatively correlated to CP, but positively correlated to ash of whole Napier or their botanical fractions. Leaf blade, on the other hand, increases CP but decreases ash content of whole plant or their fractions. These results, therefore, suggest that napiergrass varieties differ widely in terms of botanical fractions and nutritive value, which may have important implications on intake and productivity of animals. Furthermore, napiergrass varieties should be selected for leaf blade only for a better response.
Earlier we have reported the antidiabetic activity of fresh juice of rhizomes of Zingiber officinale (Z. officinale) and its correlation with 5-HT receptor antagonism. Since 6-gingerol the marker compound of Z. officinale is reported to posses 5-HT anatgonistic activity, the present investigation, was undertaken to find out the concentration of 6-gingerol present in methanolic extract of Z. officinale and its different fractions (petroleum ether, toluene and chloroform). We also evaluated these fractions for antidiabetic activity in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced neonatal type 2 diabetic rats. Fasting glucose and insulin levels in non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) rats were found to be significantly (P < 0.05) higher than control rats and these were significantly decreased by treatment with methanolic extract of Z. officinale and its fractions. The results of oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) showed that methanolic extract and its fractions significantly (P < 0.05) decreased both STZ-induced increase in $AUC_{glucose}$ and $AUC_{insulin}$ values in NIDDM groups. Treatment with petroleum ether fraction produced a greater reduction in elevated glucose and $AUC_{glucose}$ levels as compared to treatment with other fractions. Treatment with methanolic extract of Z. officinale and its fractions also produced significant reduction in the elevated lipid, serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT) and serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) levels in NIDDM rats. The effect of petroleum ether fraction on elevated lipid, SGOT and SGPT levels was significantly greater as compared to treatment with other fractions. The concentration of 6-gingerol was found to be maximum in petroleum ether fraction (11.430%) and minimum in chloroform fraction (0.973%). The methanolic extract and toluene fraction was found to contain 3.080% and 2.191 %, 6-gingerol respectively. In conclusion, our data suggest that methonolic extract and its fractions possess significant antidiabetic activity in NIDDM rats. The extent of activity appears to be dependent on the concentration of 6-gingerol present in the extract or its fractions.
We investigated the antimicrobial activity of ether and ethylacetate fractions from Artemisia capillaris and Artemisia iwayomogi used as Injin. The antimicrobial activity of the ethylacetate fractions from Artemisia capillaris and Artemisia iwayomogi for tested microbes were stronger than those of ether fractions of the two Artemisia plants. The antimicrobial activity of fractions of Artemisia iwayomogi was higher than that of fractions of Artemisia capillaris for the tested microbes. The extracts of young shoots and leaves showed stronger antimicrobial activity than those of young leaves. The range of minimum inhibitory concentrations(MICs) of ethylacetate fractions from the part of Artemisia capillaris and Artemisia iwayomogi were 0.25~2.0 mg/ml. The MICs of ether fractions were showed higher concentration than those of ethylacetate fractions. The fractions of Artemisia iwayomogi showed lower MICs than fractions of Artemisia capillaris. The highest total polyphenol content was found in young shoots and leaves of A. capillaris. The young shoots and leaves of the two kinds of Artemisia plants showed higher content of total polyphenol.
In Order to study antioxidative action of water soluble fractions which had been steamed according to time as 15, 30, 60 and 120 minutes, they were compared through the inhibitory effect of lipoperoxide formation by TBA, peroxide value and induction time for the first period of lipoperoxide formation. Results are obtained as follows: 1. In vivo experiment with TBA value, water soluble fractions showed aninhibitory effect of lipoperoxide formation. 2. Comparing with the inhibitory effect of lipoperoxide formation with TBA value in vivo, water soluble fractions which had been steamed for 30 and 60 minutes and those from fresh garlic proved effective in the blood by intraperitoneal administration. But in the liver all of water soluble fractions showed distinctive effect as in the case of fresh garlic. 3. Effect of water soluble fractions which had been steamed for 15, 30 and 60 minutes showed a distinctive effect, water soluble fraction which had been steamed for 120 minutes and that from fresh garlic also showed effective in the blood as compared with control. 4. In oral administration, water soluble fraction of fresh garlic was the most effective in the liver. 5. In vitro experiment with peroxide value, water soluble fractions which had been steamed for 60 and 120 minutes were effective, all of water soluble fractions from steamed garlic were more effective than fresh garlic. 6. In Examining the induction time for the first period of lipoperoxide formation in vitro, water soluble fractions steamed for 30, 60 and 120 minutes were effective. Other fractions were also more effective than control.
