Boeun granodiorite, which intruded into the metasedimentary rocks of the Ogcheon Group, show chemical natures of metaluminous and calc-alkaline. Generating and emplacing environment of the Boeun granodiorite would have been a active continental margin. Comparing to the contemporaneous Inje-Hongcheon granodiorite in the Gyeonggi massif, the Boeun granodiorite seems likely to have formed under more immature continental arc environment. Compositional changes of major, trace and rare earth elements in granodiorite and felsic dyke are not certain to indicate crystallization differentiation. From this fact, the simple fractional crystallization model would be in question to explain the magma process which controlled the formation of the Boeun granitic mass. The model calculations for Rayleigh fractionation, fractionation with variable major-component composition, assimilation-fractional crystallization (AFC) were carried out to examine the magma process of the mass. The results of former two models do not agree with the compositional variations in the mass. The AFC model can be, however, applied to the magma process. The conditions for AFC process are (1) composition of assimilated wallrock is similar to that of primary magma. (2) assimilating rate is similar to crystallizing rate, and (3) mass of assimilated wallrock is about 10% of that of the magma. These conditions deny a possibility that the assimilated wallrock was the metasedimentary rocks of the Ogcheon Group. This indicates that after having experienced the assimilation process in deeper crust, the granodiorite magma intruded into the Ogcheon group. Every model calculating suggests that the felsic dyke was differentiated not from the granodiorite magma, but from a different source magma.
The older granitic rocks of the study area are composed of mainly orthogneiss and foliated granite. These rocks shows mostly mortar or fiaser structure by strong mylonitization and thermal metamorphism during several orogenies. $^{40}Ar-^{39}Ar$ incremental·release ages of these rocks have been determined for 6 hornblende. 7 muscovite and 4 biotite concentrates separated from rocks collected across the Ryeongnam massif. Most $^{40}Ar-^{39}Ar$ age are discordant with Rb-Sr whole rock age of the same area. These ages range from 1998 to 172Ma. This discordant age is interpreted to indicate that samples were in contact with Daebo granite body that was characterized by large and variable $^{40}Ar-^{39}Ar$ ratios. Such ratios most likely resulted from widespread diffusion of the argon liberated from older granitic rocks during several metamorphic overprint. The general trend of the chemical composition of these rocks suggest that most of them are some series of differentiated products by fractional crystallization.
The purpose of this study is to clarify the nature of the differentiation and petrogenesis of igneous rocks in comparison with experimental results based on petrological and geochemical criteria. Study area is composed of the Precambrian granitic gneiss complex, Triassic meladiorite and biotite granodiorite, Jurassic biotite granite, and Cretaceous quartz porphyry. According to the data of EPMA, the clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene of meladiorite come under salite and hypersthene, respectively. Such results suggests that meladiorite is incipient differentiated products of basic magma under slow cooling condition. The petrochemical data of variation diagram of major element oxides vs. silica and of trace element oxide vs. silica, AMF triangle diagram and trace elements suggests that igneous rocks of study area are plutonic rocks belong to calc alkali rock series of the source of comagma intruded-emplaced in the order of meladiorite, biotite granodiorite and biotite granite by fractional crystallization of magma.
The Imgye and the Samhwa granitoids distributed in the northeastern part of the Okchon Zone are known to be emplaced during the Mesozoic time. These granitoids intruded the Precambrian metasedimentary bedrocks and Cambro-ordovician sedimentary rocks. Petrographically the Samhwa granitoid is a biotite granite of mainly coars-grained texture with some fine-grained exceptions and the Imgye granitoid contains typically large phenocrysts of pinkish K-feldspars. Geochemical discriminators in terms of major elements suggest that the Samhwa and the Imgye granitoids are I-type and magnetite series. These granitoids are also classified as calc-alkalic rocks of subalkalic series. The Imgye and the Samhwa granitoids could have been evolved mainly by fractional crystallization and minimum partial melting respectively.
Hornblende gabbro-lamprophyre-diorite Complex in Guwoonri, Hwacheon distributes in a zonal pattern, where the diorite distributed along the margin of the Complex encompasses the hornblende gabbro body in the central part of the Complex, and lamprophyre intruded in vein along the boundary between diorite and hornblende gabbro. The hornblende gabbro in the central part of the Complex also shows a zonal distribution pattern, where hornblende gabbro containing subspherical amphibole phenocrysts as a major mafic mineral(Sag) surrounds hornblende gabbro with prismatic amphiboles as a principal mafic mineral(Pag). The zonal distributions observed in hornblende gabbro-lamprophyre-diorite Complex in Guwoonri resulted from two different geological processes. The zonal distribution among diorite, lamprophyre, and hornblende gabbro was due to intrusions of three distinct magmas derived from different degree of partial melting of a common source rock, whereas the zonal distribution shown within the hornblende gabbro body occupying the central part of the Complex resulted from an inward fractional crystallization of a single magma. Geochemical characteristics and mineral mode of hornblende gabbro, lamprophyre, and diorite indicate that these rocks formed from hydrous mafic to intermediate magma derived from partial melting of enriched mantle, which has been caused by infiltration of volatiles including water into mantle in plate margin.
There are exposed Samrangjin Tuff and intracaldera intrusions, of which rhyolitic rocks emplaced as postcollapsed central and ring intrusions within the Samrangjin caldera, and fine-grained granodiorite and biotite granite as regional tectonic intrusions nearby. The Samrangjin Tuff and the rhyolitic rocks are of a single Samrangjin magmatic system. Flow-banded rhyolite among rhyolitic rocks was emplaced in the outer part of the ring intrusions, rhyodacite in the inner part of the eastern ring, and porphyritic dacite and dacite porphyry in the inner part of the northwestern ring. Totally the Samrangjin Tuff and the rhyolitic rocks range from rhyolite to dacite in chemical composition. The Rb-Sr isotopic data of the Samrangjin Tuff and the rhyolitic rocks yield an age of $80.8{\pm}1.5(2{\sigma})$ Ma with the initial $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ ratio of $0.70521{\pm}0.00010(2{\sigma})$. The continuous compositional zonations generally define a large stratified magma system in the postcollapse magma chamber. The Sr isotopic data suggest that the compositional zonations might have resulted from the fractional crystallization of a parental dacitic magma.
This article deal with petrotectonic setting and petrogenesis from petrography and chemical analyses of the Cretaceous volcanic and intrusive rocks in the Cheolwon basin. The volcanic rocks are composed of basalts in Gungpyeong Formation, Geumhaksan Andesite, and rhyolitic rocks (Dongmakgol Tuff, Rhyolite and Jijangbong Tuff), and intrusive rocks, Bojangsan Andesite, granite porphyry and dikes. According to petrochemistry, these rocks represent medium-K to high-K basalt, andesite and rhyolite series that belong to calc-alkaline series, and generally show linear compositional variations of major and trace elements with increase in $SiO_2$ contents, on many Harker diagrams. The incompatible and rare earth elements are characterized by high enrichments than MORB, and gradually high LREE/HREE fractionation and sharp Eu negative anomaly with late strata, on spider diagram and REE pattern. Some trace elements exhibit a continental arc of various volcanic arcs or orogenic suites among destructive plate margins on tectonic discriminant diagrams. These petrochemical data suggest that the basalts may have originated from basaltic calc-alkaline magma of continental arc that produced from a partial melt of upper mantle by supplying some aqueous fluids from a oceanic crust slab under the subduction environment. The andesites and rhyolites may have been evolved from the basaltic magma with fractional crystallization with contamination of some crustal materials. Each volcanic rock may have been respectively erupted from the chamber that differentiated magmas rose sequentially into shallower levels equivalenced at their densities.
The Cretaceous Myeongseongsan Granite in the northwestern Gyeonggi Massif consists of a major pale pink-colored biotite monzogranite and a minor white-colored biotite alkaligranite. Low Sr and high Ba concentrations, negative Eu-anomalies in REE plot, negative Sr anomalies in spider diagram, a negative correlation between Sr and Rb, and positive correlations between Sr and Ba and $Eu/Eu^*$ indicate that a fractional crystallization of both plagioclase and K-feldspar played a significant role during magma evolution. The Myeongseongsan Granite is plotted in I-& S-type granites on I, S, A-type granite classification scheme. While the biotite monzogranite is plotted in unfractionated I-& S-type granite, the biotite alkaligranite is plotted in fractionated I-& S-type granite, which indicates that the biotite alkaligranite is a more differentiated product. In order to elucidate the nature of the protoliths of the peraluminous Myeongseongsan magma, we plotted in $Al_2O_3/TiO_2$ vs. $CaO/Na_2O$ and Rb/Sr vs. Rb/Ba diagrams, and they suggest that the Myeongseongsan Granite was derived from clay-poor metagreywackes and meta-psammites or their igneous counterparts. Whole-rock zircon saturation temperature indicates that the Myeongseongsan magma was melted at $740-799^{\circ}C$.
A laboratory study was carried out to recover KI crystals with high purity from a waste solution generated from the production of polarizing film for LCD industry. The waste solution contains 1 to 4% KI, and other impurities such as B, PVA and etc. More than 95% purity of KI crystals were produced through refining process such as vacuum evaporation and fractional crystallization. Most of B compounds and impurities were removed by concentrating the waste solution until KI content reached about 50%. The KI crystals were washed with solvents to remove most of PVA which gave result in producing 99.5% purity of crystals. The overall recovery of KI was about 90% during the concentration process.
The Mt. Baegyang in Busan, composed of sedimentary basement rocks (Icheonri Formation), andesite (lava), andesitic pyroclastic rocks, fallout tuff and tuffaceous sedimentary rocks, rhyolitic pyroclastic rocks, intrusive rocks (granite-porphyry, felsite, and biotite-granite) of Cretaceous age in ascending order. The volcanic rocks show a section of composite volcano which comprised alternation of andesitic lava and pyroclasitc rocks, rhyolitic pyrocalstic rocks (tuff breccia, lapilli tuff, fine tuff) from the lower to the upper strata. From the major element chemical analysis, the volcanic and intrusive rocks belong to calc-alkaline rock series. The trace element composition and REE patterns of volcanic and plutonic rocks, which are characterized by a high LILE/HFSE ratio and enrichments in LREE, suggest that they are typical of continental margin arc calc-alkaline rocks produced in the subduction environment. Primary basaltic magma might have been derived from partial melting of mantle wedge in the upper mantle under destructive plate margin. Crystallization differentiation of the basaltic magma would have produced the calc-alkaline andesitic magma. And the felsic rhyolitic magma seems to have been evolved from andesitic magma with crystallization differentiation of plagioclase, pyroxene, and hornblende.
