In this study, regional variation in vertebral bone density due to osteoporosis were investigated using a method that employs images from QCT. QCT images(1mm thick slices) of the first lumbar vertebra from a normal person (23/M, BMD=139.8mg/ml) and from an osteoporotic patient (54/F, BMD=82.0mg/ml) were obtained. Uniform settings (140kVp, 204mA) were used and images of 300 Hounsfield Unit or greater were selectied to filler out soft tissue interference. To assess the regional variation of the area fraction the vertebral body was divided into 3 layers and each layer contained 9 regions. Area faction was calculated based on image analysis data. Our results showed that the area fraction at the middle of the vertebra was quite lower than the endplate and peripheral regions, but the area fraction values from the osteoporotic patient were uniform throughout the entire height of the vertebral body, which indicates the significant drop of BMD had occurred near both end-plates due to the osteoporosis, especially at the peripheral regions. Our results suggest the susceptability of the vertebrae to compression fracture types in osteoporotic spine.
This study aims to produce land-cover maps of Korean peninsula using multi-temporal MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) imagery. To solve the low spatial resolution of MODIS data and enhance classification accuracy, Linear Spectral Mixture Analysis (LSMA) was employed. LSMA allowed to determine the fraction of each surface type in a pixel and develop vegetation, soil and water fraction images. To eliminate clouds, MVC (Maximum Value Composite) was utilized for vegetation fraction and MinVC (Minimum Value Composite) for soil fraction image respectively. With these images, using ISODATA unsupervised classifier, southern part of Korean peninsula was classified to low and mid level land-cover classes. The results showed that vegetation and soil fraction images reflected phenological characteristics of Korean peninsula. Paddy fields and forest could be easily detected in spring and summer data of the entire peninsula and arable land in North Korea. Secondly, in low level land-cover classification, overall accuracy was 79.94% and Kappa value was 0.70. Classification accuracy of forest (88.12%) and paddy field (85.45%) was higher than that of barren land (60.71%) and grassland (57.14%). In midlevel classification, forest class was sub-divided into deciduous and conifers and field class was sub-divided into paddy and field classes. In mid level, overall accuracy was 82.02% and Kappa value was 0.6986. Classification accuracy of deciduous (86.96%) and paddy (85.38%) were higher than that of conifers (62.50%) and field (77.08%).

Environments (field, galaxy groups, and galaxy clusters) can affect galaxy evolution due to galaxy interaction which is controlled by different galaxy number densities and velocity dispersions. Since the galaxy interaction or merger triggers both star formation and AGN, AGN fraction can be used to understand the effect of environment. We detected X-ray AGN fraction in a nearby galaxy cluster, Abell 133, using Chandra X-ray image and optical spectra. We found ~600 X-ray point sources in the field of Abell 133 using the 2.8 Msec exposure Chandra images. We determined 3 cluster members based on the redshifts derived from optical spectra obtained from Magellan IMACS observation. The AGN fraction in Abell 133 is similar to that of other environments, i.e., COSMOS and CDFS. We will discuss the results by comparing Abell 133 with other environments.
In this study, we investigated the freezing delay time on surfaces with different patterns under -30° conditions through visualization experiments. Among various pattern structures, we fabricated the shape and surface of liquid from the spacing using circular filaments and hole structures. Additionally, using a high-speed camera, we visualized the freezing scenes, enabling us to obtain freezing images and measure the freezing time of the liquid. For each structure, the contact angle and solid fraction of the surface varied. We observed that the freezing delay time was longest when the contact angle was largest and the solid fraction was smallest within the experimental results. We analyzed the variation in anti-icing time using the heat exchange equation between the patterned surface and the liquid.
In this paper, we derive i) a function to estimate snow cover fraction (SCF) from a MODIS satellite image that has a wide observational area and short re-visit period and ii) a function to determine snow depth from the estimated SCF map. The SCF equation is important for estimating the snow depth from optical images. The proposed SCF equation is defined using the Gaussian function. We found that the Gaussian function was a better model than the linear equation for explaining the relationship between the normalized difference snow index (NDSI) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and SCF. An accuracy test was performed using 38 MODIS images, and the achieved root mean square error (RMSE) was improved by approximately 7.7 % compared to that of the linear equation. After the SCF maps were created using the SCF equation from the MODIS images, a relation function between in-situ snow depth and MODIS-derived SCF was defined. The RMSE of the MODIS-derived snow depth was approximately 3.55 cm when compared to the in-situ data. This is a somewhat large error range in the Republic of Korea, which generally has less than 10 cm of snowfall. Therefore, in this study, we corrected the calculated snow depth using the relationship between the measured and calculated values for each single image unit. The corrected snow depth was finally recorded and had an RMSE of approximately 2.98 cm, which was an improvement. In future, the accuracy of the algorithm can be improved by considering more varied variables at the same time.
Purpose In case of nuclear medical hepatobiliary scan, To quantitatively evaluate contractility of a gallbladder, gallbladder ejection fraction (GBEF%) is calculated from anterior images using fatty meal. However, when a gallbladder and other organs overlap on an anterior image, the gallbladder ejection fraction is not accurately evaluated. In order to reduce this error, the objective of our study was to figure out whether there is a significant difference in GBEF% calculated from the anterior and right lateral images. Materials and Methods After intravenous injection of 99mTc-Mebrofenin 370 MBq to randomly 50 patients who visited our hospital, we started to examine nuclear hepatobiliary scan. Using skylight(Philips, United States), we acquired anterior and right lateral image at 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90minutes after injection. Using images at 60 and 90 minutes, gallbladder ejection fraction (GBEF%) was calculated from the anterior and right lateral images using JETstream workspace. For drawing more accurate ROI, CT images were referenced and 4 radiologists calculated the GBEF% in the same image and calculated the average value. We assessed whether there was a significant difference in GBEF% calculated from the anterior and right lateral images using SPSS program(Statistical Package for the Social Science, SPSS Ver.18 Inc. USA). Results About randomly 50 patients, the average value of the GBEF% calculated from the anterior image was 63.212 and the average value of the GBEF% calculated from the right lateral image was 62.666. GBEF% decreased 0.433% on the right lateral image compared with anterior image. Result of paired sample t-test, p value is over 0.05. So, there was no significant difference in GBEF% calculated from the anterior and right lateral images. Conclusion In the case that a gallbladder and other organs are not separated on an anteior image, Right lateral image would be better to acquire more accurate GBEF% than using anterior image.

Confocal Reflection Microscopy (CRM) was applied to investigate external fibrillation of different types of fibers such as Kajaani reference fiber, Whatman filter fiber, thermomechanical pulp (TMP), and recycled TMP fiber. It was confirmed that the CRM images are created from surface structures of the fiber cell wall. Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) captured overall shape of the fiber, but minute details of the surface of the fiber were missed. CRM captured the minute details of the fiber surface. From the CRM and CLSM images, it was observed that the CRM images mainly appeared on the fiber surfaces. External fibrillation of the fiber occurs at the fiber surface, not inside the cell wall. Thus, it was concluded that investigation on the external fibrillation of the fiber was possible by utilizing CRM images. A direct qualtitative and quantitative method for analysis of external fibrillation of fiber was demonstrated by utilizing surface area to volume ratio, volume fraction, and roughness calculated from 3-dimensional images reconstructed from stacks of CRM images from the different fibers.
This study demonstrated that a slag, an industrial solid waste, can be used as a structural reinforcement. The mechanical properties(tensile strength and Elastic modulus) of slag reinforced composite(SRC) was investigated as functions of slag particle size (8~12 ${\mu}m$ and 12~16 ${\mu}m$) and volume fraction (0-40 vol.%). In order to investigate the interface and a degree of particle dispersion which have an effect on mechanical properties, optical microscopic images were taken. The results of tensile tests showed that the tensile strength decreased with an increase in slag volume fraction and particle size. The elastic modulus increased with an increase in slag volume fraction and particle size except for 30 vol.% SRC. The tensile strength decreased with an increase in slag particle size. The microscopic picture showed SRC has fine degree of particle dispersion at low slag volume fraction. SRC has a good interface at every volume fraction. However particle cluster was incorporated with an increase in slag volume fraction.

A measurement technique fur void fraction has been proposed using a time-resolved two-phase PIV system and the bubble dynamics has been investigated in gas-liquid two-phase flows. For the three-dimensional evaluation of the bubble information, both the images from the front and side views are simultaneously recorded into a high speed CCD camera by reflecting the side view image on a $45^{\circ}$ oriented mirror to be juxtaposed with the front view image. Then, a stereo-matching technique is applied to calculate the void fraction, bubble size and shape. To obtain the rising bubble velocities, the 2-frame PTV method was adopted. The present technique is applied to freely rising bubby flows in stagnant liquid. The results show that the increase of bubble flow rate gives rise to the increase of bubble size and rising velocity at first. If it goes over a certain level, the rising velocity becomes constant and the horizontal velocity grows bigger instead due to the obstruction of other bubbles.
Experimental study was conducted to characterize the flow effect of particle migration in a microchannel which can be used to deliver small amount of liquids, drugs, biological agents and particles in microfluidic devices. Fluorescent particles of $1\{mu}m$ diameter were used to obtain velocity profiles of the fluid in which large particles of $10\{mu}m$ diameter were suspended at different volume fraction of 0.6 and $0.8\%$. Measurements were obtained by using micro-PIV system which contains a Nd:YAG laser with a light of 532-nm wavelength, an inverted epi-fluorescent microscope and a cooled CCD camera to record particle images. The volume fraction of $\phi$ and the particle Reynolds number $Re_p$Rep were used as a parameter to assess the influence of the velocity profile of the suspensions. To expect the slip velocity between the particle and fluids, experiments were carried out at low volume fraction. It was shown that the velocity profile was not influenced by Rep but influenced by the volume fraction, which is in similar trend with the previous study.
