  • Fatigue crack growth and life have been estimated based on established empirical equations. In this paper, an alternative method using artificial neural network (ANN) -based model developed to predict fatigue damages simultaneously. To learn and generalize the ANN, fatigue crack growth rate and life data were built up using in-plane bending fatigue test results. Single fracture mechanical parameter or nondestructive parameter can't predict fatigue damage accurately but multiple fracture mechanical parameters or nondestructive parameters can. Existing fatigue damage modeling used this merit but limited real-time damage monitoring. Therefore, this study shows fatigue damage model using backpropagation neural networks on the basis of X -ray half breadth ratio B / $B_o$, fractal dimension $D_f$ and fracture mechanical parameters can estimate fatigue crack growth rate da/ dN and cycle ratio N / $N_f$ at the same time within engineering limit error ($5\%$).

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the clothing component information and attributes as the control parameters for the 3D modeling process of the biomorphic clothing sculpture using a parametric methodology. The 3D modeling parameters of biomorphic clothing sculpture were identified as exaggerated silhouette, surface texture, and digital color. The types of exaggerated silhouettes were shoulder and hip exaggeration, shoulder exaggeration, hip exaggeration, vertical exaggeration, and horizontal exaggeration. The types of surface texture were embossed, lacy, furry, and complex textures. The types of digital color were chrome, blur, blend, and acid colors. The characteristics of morphological representation due to the attributes of these control variables were identified as morphological variation, organic morphology, organizational morphology, and realistic morphology. As a result, it was found that the parameter attributes were applied to the biomorphic clothing sculpture parametric design process and developed into various shapes.

  • In this paper, an improved fractal color image decoding method using the data dependence parts and the vector distortion measure is proposed. The vector distortion measure exploits the correlation between different color components. The pixel in RGB color space can be considered as a 30dimensional vector with elements of RGB components. The root mean square error(rms) in RGB color for similarity measure of two blocks R and R' was used. We assume that various parameter necessary in image decoding are stored in the transform table. If the parameter is referenced in decoding image, then decoding is performed by the recursive decoding method. If the parameter is not referenced in decoding image, then the parameters recognize as the data dependence parts and store its in the memory. Non-referenced parts can be decoded only one time, because its domain informations exist in the decoded parts by the recursive decoding method. Non-referenced parts are defined the data dependence parts. Image decoding method using data dependence classifies referenced parts and non-referenced parts using information of transform table. And the proposed method can be decoded only one time for R region decoding speed than Zhang & Po's method, since it is decreased the computational numbers by execution iterated contractive transformations for the referenced range only.

  • Heterogeneous background fractures of granite and sedimentary rocks in Gyeongju LILW (low-intermediate level radioactive waste) facility area have been characterized quantitatively by analyzing fracture parameters (orientation, intensity, and size). Surface geological survey, electrical resistivity survey, and acoustic televiewer log data were used to characterize the heterogeneity of background fractures. Bootstrap method was applied to represent spatial anisotropy of variably oriented background fractures in the study area. As a result, the fracture intensity was correlated to the inverse distance from the faults weighted by nearest fault size and the mean value of electrical resistivity and the average volumetric fracture intensity ($P_{32}$) was estimated as $3.1m^2/m^3$. Size (or equivalent radius) of the background fractures ranged from 1.5 m to 86 m and followed to power-law distribution based on the fractal property of fracture size, using fractures measured on underground silos and identified surface faults.

  • A Monte Carlo (MC) simulation study has been done in order to investigate the effects of line-edge-roughness (LER) induced by either 1P1E (single-patterning and single-etching) or 2P2E (double-patterning and double-etching) on fully-depleted silicon-on-insulator (FDSOI) tri-gate metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs). Three parameters for characterizing the LER profile [i.e., root-mean square deviation (${\sigma}$), correlation length (${\zeta}$), and fractal dimension (D)] are extracted from the image-processed scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image for each photolithography method. It is experimentally verified that two parameters (i.e., ${\sigma}$ and D) are almost the same in each case, but the correlation length in the 2P2E case is longer than that in the 1P1E case. The 2P2E-LER-induced $V_TH$ variation in FDSOI tri-gate MOSFETs is smaller than the 1P1E-LER-induced $V_TH$ variation. The total random variation in $V_TH$, however, is very dependent on the other major random variation sources, such as random dopant fluctuation (RDF) and work-function variation (WFV).

  • The size distributions of smoke particles from fire are prerequisite for the studies on fire detection and adverse health effects. Above the flame of the fire, coagulation dominates and the smoke particles grow from 1 to 50 nm up to 100 to 3,000 nm, sizes ranging from the free-molecular regime to the continuum regime. The characteristics of the agglomeration of the smoke particles are well known, independently for each of the free-molecular and continuum regimes. However, there are not many systematic studies in the entire regime by the complexity of the mechanisms. The purpose of this work is to find the characteristics of the development of the size distribution of smoke particles by agglomeration in the entire size range covering the free-molecular regime, via transition regime, to the near-continuum and continuum regime for each variation of parameters such as fractal dimension, primary particle size and dimensionless coagulation time. In this work, the dynamic equation for the discrete-size spectrum of the particles was solved using a nodal method based on the modification of a sectional method. In the calculation, the collision frequency function for the entire regime, which is derived by using the concept of collision volume and general enhancement function, was applied. The self-preserving size distribution for the entire regime is compared with the ones for the free-molecular or continuum regimes for each variation of the parameters.

  • In this study, the dynamic instabilities of a beam, subjected to periodic short impulsive loading, are investigated using simple 2-DoF beam model. The behaviors of beam model whose axial motions are constrained are studied for the case of elastic and elastic-plastic behavior. In the case of elastic behavior, the chaotic responses due to the periodic pulse are identified, and the characteristics of the behavior are analysed by investigating the fractal attractors in the Poincare map. The short-term and long-term responses of the beam are unpredictable because of the extreme sensitivities to parameters, a hallmark of chaotic response. In the case of elastic-plastic behavior, the responses are governed by the plastic strains which occur continuously and irregularly as time increases. Thus the characteristics of the response behavior change continuously due to the plastic strain increments, and are unpredictable as well as the elastic case.

  • In this study, the insulation selected in degra-dated-power cable has been observed and aging process about the insulation has been investigated. Most Insulation aging process initiates in the interface of semiconducting layer and the type of the process is the fractal form that was observed between the the semiconducting layer and insulation layer. It is possible to estimate degree of the degration of cable with breakdown test and obtained data have been used to get parameters in order to use Weibull distribution. With this method it is considered to be possible to estimate situation of degration and life prediction.

  • Many researchers had considered biological systems as linear systems. In many cases of biological systems, the phenomena that show the regular and periodic dynamics are considered the normal state. However, some clinical experiments reported, in some cases, the periodic signals represented the abnormal state. We assume that signals from human body system are generated from deterministic, intrinsic mechanisms and can be represented a simple equation that show nonlinear dynamics dependent on control parameters. The objective of our study is to model a nonlinear dynamics correctly from the nonlinear time series using the genetic programming method; to find a simple equation of nonlinear dynamics using collected time series and its nonlinear characteristics. We applied genetic programming to model RR interval of ECG that shows chaotic phenomena. We used 4 statistic measures and 2 fractal measures to estimate fitness of each chromosome, and could obtain good solutions of which chaotic features are similar.

  • We study the long-term dynamics for a family of incompressible three-dimensional Leray-α-like models that employ the spectral fractional Laplacian operators. This family of equations interpolates between incompressible hyperviscous Navier-Stokes equations and the Leray-α model when varying two nonnegative parameters 𝜃1 and 𝜃2. We prove the existence of a finite-dimensional global attractor for the continuous semigroup associated to these models. We also show that an operator which projects the weak solution of Leray-α-like models into a finite-dimensional space is determining if it annihilates the difference of two "nearby" weak solutions asymptotically, and if it satisfies an approximation inequality.
