The applicability of models based on fractal geometry to characterize the surface of the EL devices was investigated. Insulating layer and phosphor layer of EL devices were deposited on ITO glass using e-beam method. The images of phosphor layer by scanning electron microscope(SEM) were transformed to binary coded data. The relations between fractal geometry and electrical characteristics of EL devices were investigated. When the fractal dimension of $Cas:EuF_3$ EL device was 1.82 and its grain boundary area was 19%, the brightness of $Cas:EuF_3$ EL device was 261 cd/$\textrm{m}^2$.
The article describes a technique for the measurement of the level of complexity of fracture surfaces by the method of vertical sections, and a performed statistical analysis of the effect of profile lines on the fractographic and fractal parameters of fractures, i.e. the profile line development factor, $R_L$, and the fracture surface development factor, $R_S$, (as defined by the cycloid method), as well as the fractal dimension, $D_C$, (as determined by the chord method), and the fractal dimension, $D_{BC}$, (as determined by the box method). The above-mentioned parameters were determined for fracture surfaces of basalt and gravel concretes, respectively, which had previously been subjected to fracture toughness tests. The concretes were made from mixtures of a water/cement ratio ranging from 0.41 to 0.61 and with a variable fraction of coarse aggregate to fine aggregate, $C_{agg.}/F_{agg.}$, in the range from 1.5 to 3.5. Basalt and gravel aggregate of a fraction to maximum 16 mm were used to the tests. Based on the performed analysis it has been established that the necessary number of concrete fracture profile lines, which assures the reliability of obtained testing results, should amount to 12.

This study, using Fractal theory, aims to examine the meaning in the aspect of urban spatial structure by reflecting the characteristics of elements organizing the urban space and at the same time measuring the urban form quantitatively. By calculating Fractal Dimension to Cheongju as a target, it conducted comparison and analysis by dividing building and road which are internal element of a space into the whole city and urbanized area to compare and analyze validity of the theory application and the inside of an actual urban space. For the method of an analysis, it calculated Fractal Dimension by linking a digital map including the property of building and road with GIS program and using box counting. An analysis result showed that the result value of Fractal Dimension by structure and road is all high and similar. It drew a similar result value from the whole Cheongju and the urbanized area as well, but commercial and industrial area showed low result value from the partial viewpoint. However, it is correct to regard these spaces as one space because they are intimately connected with a residential area. From the general viewpoint, it could be said that Cheongju's Fractal Dimension grows in the context of a urbanized area.

Chaos theory is a study researching the irregular, unpredictable behavior of deterministic and non-linear dynamical system. The interpretation using Chaos makes us evaluate characteristic existing in status space of system by tine series, so that the extraction of Chaos characteristic understanding and those characteristics enables us to do high precision interpretation. Therefore, This paper propose the new method which is adopted in extracting character features and recognizing characters using the Chaos Theory. Firstly, it gets features of mesh feature, projection feature and cross distance feature from input character images. And their feature is converted into time series data. Then using the modified Henon system suggested in this paper, it gets last features of character image after calculating Box-counting dimension, Natural Measure, information bit and information dimension which are meant fractal dimension. Finally, character recognition is performed by statistically finding out the each information bit showing the minimum difference against the normalized pattern database. An experimental result shows 99% character classification rates for 2,350 Korean characters (Hangul) using proposed method in this paper.

This study proposes the analysis and evaluation of method of time series of ultrasonic signal using the chaotic feature extraction for ultrasonic pattern recognition. The features are extracted from time series data for analysis of weld defects quantitatively. For this purpose, analysis objectives in this study are fractal dimension, Lyapunov exponent, and strange attractor on hyperspace. The Lyapunov exponent is a measure of rate in which phase space diverges nearby trajectories. Chaotic trajectories have at least one positive Lyapunov exponent, and the fractal dimension appears as a metric space such as the phase space trajectory of a dynamical system. In experiment, fractal(correlation) dimensions and Lyapunov exponents show the mean value of 4.663, and 0.093 relatively in case of learning, while the mean value of 4.926, and 0.090 in case of testing in slag inclusion(weld defects) are shown. Therefore, the proposed chaotic feature extraction can be enhancement of precision rate for ultrasonic pattern recognition in defecting signals of weld zone, such as slag inclusion.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of X-ray beam angulation on the fractal dimension of trabecular bone structure of human dry mandible using the tile counting method. Materials and Methods: We divided 5 human dry mandibles into an angle and a molar groups depending on the regions and deciding the region of interest (ROI). When contrasted with the ROI, the inferior cortex was appointed to be low and the lines perpendicular to the buccal cortex were appointed to be the standard angle. Direct digital intraoral radiographs were obtained from 9 different projection angles. We analyzed statistically the fractal dimension using the tile counting method. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the fractal dimension of the regions and the mandibles, but there was no statistically significant difference in the fractal dimension according to the X-ray beam angulation. Conclusion : There is no statistically significant effect of the angle of the projection on the fractal dimension of trabecular bone structure of a human dry mandible according to the tile counting method.
In this study, with the assumption that the geographical characteristics of the river basin have selfsimilarity, fractal dimensions are used to quantify the complexity of the terrain. For this, Area exponent and hurst exponent was applied to estimate the fractal dimension by using spatial analysis. The result shows that the value of area exponent and hurst exponent calculated by the fractal dimension are 2.008~2.074 and 2.132~2.268 respectively. Also the $R^2$ of area exponent and hurst exponent are 94.9% and 87.1% respectively too. It shows that the $R^2$ is relatively high. After analyzing the spatial self-similarity parameter, it is shown that traditional urban area's moderate slope geographical characteristic closed to 2D fractal in Ara water way. In addition, the relation between fractal dimension and geographical elements are identified. With these results, fractal dimension is the representative value of basin characteristics.
This paper is to find out more reliable analyzing method of heart rate variability. Heart rate variability analysis is to evaluate cardiovascular stability and also have used as an indicator of autonomic nervous system activity. In this study, time domain analysis, spectral analysis and state space analysis method are applied to analyze heart rate variability. Because of nonlinear characteristics of heart rate, we need not only spectral analysis, but also state space analysis. Fractal dimension of spectral estimation is useful indicator of autonomic nervous activity.

Based on 3-D surface morphology measurements of C.G. irons, the fractal analyses were made on relationship between dry sliding surface morphology and the fractal dimension. It is revealed that the values of fractal dimensions ($D_f$) of sliding surfaces are in the range between 1-2, which are closely related to the surface morphologies. With the increase in depths of grooves or pits, the $D_f$ values increase. At the same time, the increases in densities of the grooves also cause the $D_f$ values to increase. At last, relationship among $D_f$ and friction coefficient as well as wear rate is discussed.
Tidal channel development is influenced by sediment type, grain size, composition and tidal current. Tidal channels are usually characterized by channel formation, density and shape. Quantitative analysis of tidal channels using remotely sensed data have rarely been studied. The objective of this study is to quantify tidal channels in terms of fractal dimension and compare different inter-tidal channel patterns and compare with DEM (Digital Elevation Model). For the fractal analysis, we used box counting method which had been successfully applied to streams, coastlines and others linear features. For a study, the southern part of Ganghwado tidal flats was selected which know for high dynamics of tidal currents and vast tidal flats. This area has different widths and lengths of tidal channels. IKONOS was used for extracting tidal channels, and the box counting method was applied to obtain fractal dimensions (D) for each tidal channel. Yeochari area where channels showed less dense development and low DEM had low fractal dimenwion near $1.00{\sim}1.20$. Area (near Donggumdo and Yeongjongdo) of dendritic channel pattern and high DEM resulted in high fractal dimension near $1.20{\sim}1.35$. The difference of fractal dimensions according to channel development in tidal flats is relatively large enough to use as an index for tidal channel classification. Therefore we could conclude that fractal dimension, channel development and DEM in tidal channel has high correlation. Using fractal dimension, channel development and DEM, it would be possible to quantify the tidal channel development in association with surface characteristics.
