CT Image Analysis of Hepatic Lesions Using CAD ; Fractal Texture Analysis

  • We investigated whether the CT images of hepatic lesions could be analyzed by computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) tool. We retrospectively reanalyzed 14 liver CT images (10 hepatocellular cancers and 4 benign liver lesions; patients who presented with hepatic masses). The hepatic lesions on CT were segmented by rectangular ROI technique and the morphologic features were extracted and quantitated using fractal texture analysis. The contrast enhancement of hepatic lesions was also quantified and added to the differential diagnosis. The best discriminating function combining the textural features and the values of contrast enhancement of the lesions was created using linear discriminant analysis. Textural feature analysis showed moderate accuracy in the differential diagnosis of hepatic lesions, but statistically insignificant. Combining textural analysis and contrast enhancement value resulted in improved diagnostic accuracy, but further studies are needed.

  • Based on 3-D surface morphology measurements of C.G. irons, the fractal analyses were made on relationship between dry sliding surface morphology and the fractal dimension. It is revealed that the values of fractal dimensions ($D_f$) of sliding surfaces are in the range between 1-2, which are closely related to the surface morphologies. With the increase in depths of grooves or pits, the $D_f$ values increase. At the same time, the increases in densities of the grooves also cause the $D_f$ values to increase. At last, relationship among $D_f$ and friction coefficient as well as wear rate is discussed.

  • The determination of surface morphology is believed to be extremely important in the areas of contact mechanics, adhesion and friction. In order to describe morphology of various rubbed surface, the wear test was carried out under different experimental conditions in lubricating wear. And fractal descriptors was applied to rubbed surface of hydraulic driving material with image processing system. These descriptors to analyze surface structure are fractal dimension. Surface fractal dimension can be determined by sum of intensity difference of surface pixel. Morphology of rubbed surface can be effectively obtained by fractal dimensions.

태양주기별 흑점수의 프랙탈 차원과 최대흑점수의 상관관계 (FRACTAL DIMENSION AND MAXIMUM SUNSPOT NUMBER IN SOLAR CYCLE)

  • 프랙탈 차원은 연속적으로 관측된 불규칙한 자료의 성질을 정량적으로 표현하는 파라메터이다. 본 연구에서는 프랙탈 차원을 이용하여 태양 흑점수의 불규칙한 변동을 분석하고 다가오는 태양주기의 최대흑점수를 예측하였다. 이를 위하여 우리는 SIDC(Solar Influences Data analysis Center)에서 제공하는 1850년부터 2004년까지의 일일흑점수를 이용하여 Higuchi의 방법으로 각 태양주기의 프랙탈 차원을 결정하고 같은 태양주기 동안의 최대 월평균 흑점수와 비교하였다. 그 결과 프랙탈 차원과 최대 월평균 흑점수는 강한 역비례 관계를 보였다. 이러한 관계를 이용하여 태양활동 극소기부터 활동이 증가되는 기간인 4년동안의 흑점수만을 이용하여 프랙탈 차원을 구하고 다가올 극대기의 최대 월평균 흑점수를 예측한 결과 관측된 최대흑점수와 0.89의 좋은 상관관계를 보였다.

Radiologic assessment of bone healing after orthognathic surgery using fractal analysis

  • Purpose : To evaluate the radiographic change of operation sites after orthognathic surgery using the digital image processing and fractal analysis. Materials and Methods : A series of panoramic radiographs of thirty-five randomly selected patients who had undergone mandibular orthognathic surgery (bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy) without clinical complication for osseous healing, were taken. The panoramic radiographs of each selected patient were taken at pre-operation (stage 0), 1 or 2 days after operation (stage 1), 1 month after operation (stage 2), 6 months after operation (stage 3), and 12 months after operation (stage 4). The radiographs were digitized at 600 dpi, 8 bit, and 256 gray levels. The region of interest, centered on the bony gap area of the operation site, was selected and the fractal dimension was calculated by using the tile-counting method. The mean values and standard deviations of fractal dimension for each stage were calculated and the differences among stage 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 were evaluated through repeated measures of the ANOVA and paired t-test. Results : The mean values and standard deviations of the fractal dimensions obtained from stage 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 1.658±0.048, 1.580±0.050, 1.607±0.046, 1.624±0.049, and 1.641 ±0.061, respectively. The fractal dimensions from stage 1 to stage 4 were shown to have a tendency to increase (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The tendency of the fractal dimesion to increase relative to healing time may be a useful means of evaluating post-operative bony healing of the osteotomy site.

Fragmentation 프랙탈을 이용한 입도분포 분석 (Fragmentation Fractal Analysis on Particle-size Distribution)

  • 흙을 나타내는 가장 기본적인 물리적 성질중의 하나가 흙을 구성하는 입자들의 입도분포이며, 입도분포특성을 분석하기 위해 최근에 대두되고 있는 방법중의 하나가 프랙탈 이론이다. 본 연구에서는 fragmentation 프랙탈을 이용하여 흙의 입도분포곡선의 특성을 파악하였다. Fragmentation 프랙탈을 표현하는 방법에는 ‘개수-입경’프랙탈과 '중량-입경' 프랙탈이 있으며, 본 연구 결과, '중량-입경' 방법이 더 실용적이었다. 균등계수($C_{u}$)가 4이하에서는 균등계수가 증가함에 따라 프랙탈차원($D_{tot}$)이 급격히 증가하였으나, 균등계수가 6이상에서는 일정한 값에 수렴되는 결과를 나타냈다. 곡률계수($C_{c}$)가 3이상에서는 프랙탈차원은 크기가 작은 입자들의 영향을 받고, 곡률계수가 3이하에서는 큰 입자들의 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 유효입경($D_{10}$)의 크기에 따른 프랙탈차원의 변화를 분석한 결과, 균등계수와 곡률계수가 같을 경우 프랙탈차원은 유효입경의 크기에 영향을 거의 받지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 전체 입자의 크기분포를 고려할 수 있는 프랙탈 개념을 입도분석에 적용하는 것이 바람직할 것으로 판단되며, 향후 프랙탈차원과 흙의 공학적 특성과의 관계정립에 대한 지속적인 연구가 필요하다.

분열 프랙탈을 이용한 다짐 에너지의 영향 분석 - 입도, 다짐도 및 투수특성을 중심으로 - (Analysis of Effect of Compaction Energy on Characters of Grain Size Distribution, Compaction and Permeability Using Fragmentation Fractal)

  • Particles of soil are crushed when soil is compacted in the in-situ or lab. Among many factors that affect the crush of particles, compaction energy is a major factor. Because the crush of particles can change physical properties, the analysis of effect of compaction energy is very important. In this study, the fragmentation fractals were used for determining the change in grain size distribution and the effect due to change in grain size distribution was estimated. Compaction energy was increased by 50, 100, 200 and 300% based on the energy of standard A compaction test. As a result, grain size distribution curves were changed and fine particles increased as compaction energy were increased. Relative compaction were ranged between $93.38{\sim}107.67$. Fractal dimension of each site increased as compaction energy increased. Relative compaction is proportional to the fractal dimension but coefficients of permeability were in inverse proportional to the involution of fractal dimension.

Observation of trabecular changes of the mandible after orthognathic surgery using fractal analysis

  • Objectives: This study sought to evaluate trabecular changes in the mandible using fractal analysis and to explain the transient osteopenia related to rapid orthodontic tooth movement after orthognathic surgery. Materials and Methods: Panoramic radiographs were taken of 26 patients who underwent bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy. Radiographs taken before the surgery and 1 month after surgery were overlapped, and $40{\times}40$ pixel square regions of interest were selected near the mandibular canines and 1st molars. After the image processing procedure, the fractal dimension was calculated using the box-counting method. Results: Fractal dimension after orthognathic surgery decreased in a statistically significant manner (P<0.05). The change in fractal dimension on the canine side had greater statistical significance as compared to that seen on the 1st molar side. Conclusion: This study found that bone density decreases after orthognathic surgery due to transient osteopenia related to the regional acceleratory phenomenon. This result can provide a guide to evaluating orthodontic tooth movement after orthognathic surgery.

프랙탈 차원을 이용한 스나이더 합성단위유량도 관계식 유도 (Derivation of Snyder's Synthetic Unit Hydrograph Using Fractal Dimension)

  • 하천치수를 고려한 프랙탈 차원의 개념을 실제 강우-유출 모형에 적용시키는 방안으로써 스나이더 합성단위유량 도법을 택하였으며, 5대강 수계의 29개 유역에 대한 지형자료와 관측단위유량도 자료를 이용하여 4가지 형태의 스나이더형 관계식을 유도하였다. 29개 유역에 대한 분석과 2개 유역에 대한 검증 결과 하천길이의 프랙탈적인 성질을 이용하고 기계산된 자료는 기계산된 값을 이용하는 스나이더형 관계식이 가장 좋은 결과를 보여주었다. 하천차수 유역중심에서 출구까지의 하천길이( Lca )중 Lca 는 프랙탈적인 성질이 없고 유역중심의 상류에 해당하는 주하천 구간인 ( Lma - Lca )만이 1.027의 프랙탈 차원을 갖는다는 가정을 하였으며, 이를 이용하여 우리날 수계를 대표 할 수 있으며 작업대상 지형도축척에 의해 발생하는 하천길이의 프랙탈적인 영향을 고려할 수 있는 새로운 스나이더형 공식을 제안하였다.
