No-tillage direct seeding of rice is consumed less labor and oil energy by no plowing and rotary tillage. And it has other advantages of soil and water conservation and accumulation of organic matter on paddy surface due to crowded water foxtail (Alopecurus aequalis var. amurensis). When no-tillage seeding of rice, many water foxtail occurred in winter paddy field. In this experiment their covering degrees were 97.6% and 95.2% in clay loam and sandy loam paddy soils, respectively. Because of this, Stellaria alsine var. undulata, Cardamine flexuosa, Rorippa indica and Ixeris chinensis etc. annual and perennial wintering weeds occurrence was reduced. And annual weeds Chenopodium serotinum and Polygonum hydropiper that occurred early in spring were also reduced. As well as Echinochloa crusgalli var. praticola, Cyperus difformis, Monochoria vaginalis and Lindernia procumbens etc. summer annual weeds that occurred after irrigation were also reduced. In conclusion, no-tillage direct seeding of rice has another advantages of weed management by water foxtail.

Micro-filtration (MF) or ultra-filtration (UF) system with hollow-fiber cartridge was introduced in order to improve the Quality level of commercial foxtail millet Yakju, which has an off-flavour and/or undesired colour after the thermal treatment. The filtration effects of cartridges such as MF (0.65, 0.45, 0.2, 0.1 $\mu$m) and UF (500 K dalton) were investigated. The physicochemical and sensory characteristics of the Yakju were then evaluated during the 6 months storage at room temperature. The exclusion ability of microorganism in samples was confirmed in all cartridges, but 0.45 pm MF-cartridge was suitable in the Yakju manufacture due to its superior filtration rate and efficiency. Changes in reducing sugar and colour difference of foxtail millet Yakju untreated or treated by heat ($65^{\circ}C$${\times}$10 min) were observed during the storage; after 6 months the L-value of thermal-treatment sample was decreased and its b-value, however, significantly increased so that its color became dark, in comparison to non-thermal treatment sample. This decrease of reducing sugar is assumed that color change is associated with non-enzymatic browning reaction. Sensory Quality of foxtail millet Yakju produced by non-thermal treatment was better than that of thermal treatment.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of plant number per hill (PNH) on growth and yield of foxtail millet in drained paddy fields. Crop growth, development, and yield in the field were examined for 2 years to assess the efficiency of proposed cropping system. The greatest culm length of 138 and 148 cm in the first and the second year, respectively, at the harvest stage was observed in plots with one plant per hill. The greatest culm diameter of 7.79 and 7.67 mm in the first and second year, respectively, was measured in plots with one plant per hill. The greatest tiller number of foxtail millet in plots with one plant per hill was 2.9 and 2.7 in the first and the second year, respectively. However, there was no significant difference between plots with four and five plant per hill. Among the measured yield components, the spike length and seed number per spike were one plant per hill in both years. The highest grain yield of foxtail millet ($324kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$ and $333kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$ in the first and second year, respectively) was obtained from plots with two plants por hill, followed by plots one, three, four, and five plants per hill.
Foxtail millet (Setaria italica L. Beaur) is a native Korean herbal medical food and a native millet, and Koreans have eaten it as a substitute for rice since ancient times. Foods using foxtail millet (Setaria italica L. Beaur) have been recorded not only in cookbooks but also in Korean traditional medical books several times. Therefore, the purposes of this study was to investigate Food-Therapy (食治) using foxtail millet (Setaria italica L. Beaur) recorded in the literature from 1300 to 1600 from early to mid-Joseon (朝鮮) and provide data required to develop menus for Yaksun (藥膳, herbal food). This study examined Food-Therapy using foxtail millet (Setaria italica L. Beaur) in 10 types of literatures from the 1300s to the 1600s. and is described in the literature a total of 63 times. According to classification by cooking method, porridge (粥) was most frequently mentioned in the literature at 27 times. The cooking method of Soup (湯) is described 11 times. Cooking methods such as porridge juice and soup are frequently used since those methods are digestive and absorptive. Other food ingredients described using foxtail millet (Setaria italica L. Beaur) are white leek (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) ginger (Zingiber officinale), chicken egg, Allium chinense, sparrow (Passer montanus), rooster liver, Du-si, crucian carp (Carassius auratus L), and white broiler. Other medicinal herbs described with Setaria italica are Panax ginseng (人蔘), Poria cocos (茯笭), Angelica acutiloba (當歸), Ziziphus jujuba (大棗), Liriopeplatyphylla (麥門冬), and cinnamon (肉桂). Food-Therapy using Setaria italica L. Beauv was described as a prescription for stomach and spleen (脾胃), stomach reflux (反胃), defecation and urinary disorder (大小便難), cholera, deficiency syndrome (虛症), and tonification (補益). This focus on promoting health and preventing diseases by strengthening the stomach and spleen and improving defecation and urination using Food-Therapy when herbal medicine was rare.
In order to improve foxtail millet wine, a traditional Jeju cereal wine, fermentation characteristics of millet Yakju with different types of Nuruks prepared using isolated Aspergillus sp. and Rhizopus sp. were investigated. When the millet wine was brewed with the Nuruk prepared in this study, the combination ratio of wheat flour: barley : wheat bran : millet = 8 : 1 : 1 : 0 (pellet) showed the highest level of alcohol concentration, and a more favorable score than Kuksundang Nuruk in sensory evaluation. The main organic acids in millet wine were lactic and acetic acids, and the minor organic acids were fumaric, oxalic, citric and malic acids. Analysis of sugar compositions showed that glucose, arabinose, and maltose were present in decreasing order, and that xylose was also detected. Flavor components of millet wine were mainly iso-amyl, iso-butyl and n-propyl alcohols. Ethylacetate and acetadehyde were also detected. The contents of iso-butyl and n-propyl alcohols were higher in the millet wine prepared with Kuksundang Nuruk than those prepared with other Nuruks.
Waxy rice, Oryza sativa, and foxtail millet, Setaria italitica, and mixture (1 : 1, w/w) of the cereals were saccharified by barley malt. The optimum conditions of saccharification were at $50^{\circ}C$ for 3 hrs on waxy rice and $55^{\circ}C$for 3 hrs on foxtail millet, respectively. The equilibrium of saccharification were reached at $20^{\circ}Brix$ on waxy rice and mixture, and $17^{\circ}Brix$ in foxtail millet. The free sugars in saccharifying liquids were found maltose, glucose and fructose with the contents of ca. 13%, 1% and trace, respectively, by HPLC analysis. The close relationships (r=0.954) between $^{\circ}{Brix}$ and reducing sugar of saccharifying liquids were observed. The result may be useful for the estimation of the end point of the saccharification.

An experiment was conducted to study the performance of broilers chicks (2 to 42 d of age) fed diets containing pearl millet (PM, Pennisetum typhoides), foxtail millet (FOM, Setaria italica) or finger millet (FIM, Elusine coracana) totally replacing (w/w) yellow maize (YM) with and with out supplementing non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) hydrolysing enzymes at the rate of 0.5 g/kg diet. Enzyme preparation contained amylase 2,400 units, hemi-cellulase 5,400 units, cellulase 12,000 units, protease 2,400 units and beta-glucanase 106 units/g. Each diet was fed to eight replicates (five female Vencob broilers/replicate) housed in stainless steel battery brooders. The estimated metabolizable energy (ME) contents of YM, PM, FOM and FIM were FM (PM) were about 3,389, 2,736, 3,303 and 2,846 kcal/kg, respectively. Total replacement of YM with FOM did not influence the body weight gain, ready to cook yield, relative weights of giblet, liver, intestine, lymphoid organs (bursa and spleen) and length of intestine, antibody titers and livability at 42 d of age. But the food efficiency decreased significantly in FOM fed broilers compared those fed YM. Further, the fat content in thigh muscle reduced with FOM fed groups compared to those fed YM. The performance of broilers decreased significantly in PM and FIM fed broilers compared to those fed YM. The relative weights of giblet, gizzard and liver increased in FIM fed groups compared to those fed YM as the principal source of energy in broilers. Incorporation of NSP hydrolysing enzymes in commercial broiler diets improved the efficiency of feed utilization during starter phase but not at 42 d of age. The results thus indicate that yellow maize can be replaced in toto on weight basis in commercial broiler diets without affecting the performance. Supplementation of NSP hydrolysing enzymes was beneficial in enhancing feed utilization during the starter phase.
The physicochemical properties such as blue value, iodine affinity, degree of polymerization (DP), $\alpha$-amylase digestibility, particle size, RVA pasting, and gel hardness of 4 different millet starches (foxtail, waxy foxtail, proso, and waxy proso) were investigated. The iodine affinity value of the four samples were 4.22, 0.49, 1.07, and 0.21%, and the DP values were 1830, 3880, 4660, and 4130, respectively. The levels of $\alpha$-amylase digestibility of the raw starches were 20.1, 30.7, 18.2 and 35.6%, respectively. The mean size of the proso millet starch was the smallest, $8.25\;{\mu}m$, and the size distribution of the particles was the narrowest among all the samples. Foxtail starch showed the largest peak viscosity and setback viscosity in RVA pasting.

A large number of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) in public databases have provided an opportunity for the systematic development of simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. EST-SSRs derived from conserved coding sequences show considerable cross-species transferability in related species. In the present study, we assessed the utility of foxtail millet EST-SSRs in barnyard millet. A total of 312 EST-SSRs of foxtail millet were tested using 84 Echinochloa crus-galli germplasm accessions; a high rate of transferability (62%) and 46 primer sets (13%) were shown the polymorphism in barnyard millet. The 13% of functional EST-SSRs) was demonstrated between cereals and barnyard millet. SSR marker profile data were scored for the computation of pairwise distances as well as a Neighbor Joining (NJ) tree of all the genotypes. The averaged values of gene diversity (HE) and polymorphism information content (PIC) were 0.213 and 0.179 within populations, respectively. The 84 barnyard millet germplasm accessions were divided into five different groups, which agreed well with their geographical origins. The exotic 12 accessions of India type barnyard millet (E. frumentacea) were all separated form Korean local collection genotype. The present results provide evidence of divergence between cultured and wild type barnyard, as a millet and grass. The polymorphic SSR markers indicated in this study were of great value in analysis of genetic diversity that can be further used for crop improvement through breeding.
This study was conducted to evaluate effects of planting densities ($60{\times}5cm$, $60{\times}10cm$, $60{\times}15cm$) and PE mulching (polyethylene film mulching, non- mulching) on growth and yield of foxtail millet in drained paddy field for 2 years. In PE plots, culm length, culm diameter and fresh weight were higher than control plot. Additionally, spike length, seed weight per hill and thousand seed weight were also higher in PE plot. The yield of foxtail millet were increased with 104% and 112% at PE plot. Culm diameter was highest at $60{\times}15cm$ plot with 8.90 and 8.06 mm, however, culm length was highest at $60{\times}5cm$ plot with 130, 142 cm in $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$, respectively. Plant height was higher by the increase of planting density. As plant density decreased, that spike length and seed weight per hill were increased. Yield of planting density were highest at $60{\times}10cm$ plot $298kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$, $436kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$ yearly, respectively that it were in order of $60{\times}10cm$ plot > $60{\times}5cm$ plot > $60{\times}15cm$ plot.
