  • This study was conducted to estimate crystalline silica contents in airborne respirable dust from various manufacturing industries and to compare analytical performance of two methods of quantifying crystalline silica, X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Fourie transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). For this study, various manufacturing industries with a history of having pneumoconiosis cases and also known to generate dusts containing crystalline silica were investigated. These industries include: foundry, brick, potteries, concrete, and abrasive material, etc. Both personal and area respirable dust samples were collected using 10 mm, Dorr-Oliver nylon cyclone equipped with 37mm, $5{\mu}m$ pore size, polyvinylchloride (PVC) filters as collection media. In addition, total dust samples were collected side-by-side to the respirable samples. All samples were weighed before and after sampling and were pretreated according to the NIOSH sampling and analytical methods 0500, 7500, and 7602 for dust collection and quartz analysis. In addition, bulk samples were collected and analyzed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) for minerals. In this article, only the results obtained from foundry are reported. The results from various other industries will be published in future articles. The respirable dust concentrations from personal samples by cyclone were $0.46-1.06mg/m^3$ and those from area samples were $0.34-0.73mg/m^3$. Dust concentrations of personal samples were significantly higher than those of area samples. The highest dust concentration was obtained from the personal samples of the finishing operation. Total dust concentration ranged $1.24-3.40mg/m^3$. The mean quartz contents estimated by FTIR and XRD in the personal respirable dust samples were 5.12% and 4.41%, respectively, without significant difference between them. For quartz analyses, the two techniques were highly correlated with $r^2$ ranged 0.803-0.920. But the results by FTIR were mostly higher than those by XRD. In addition, cristobalite was not detected by FTIR. Significant correlations between contents of crystalline silica and such minerals as $Al_2O_3$, CaO, $TiO_2$, and $K_2O$ suggest possible interferences from these minerals.

  • Most of the waste plastics are incinerated and landfilled now, leading to much environmental problems. The technology of injection into the blast furnace was developed as a useful recycling method of waste plastics, and applied to the actual operation in several ironmaking companies. We carried out the test operation to inject continuously the two kinds of waste plastics through four tuyeres of the Foundry blast furnace in POSCO by 130 ton of total amount. From this test operation, we analyzed the coke replacement ratio, the permeability, the heat load and other changes of furnace conditions with the injection of waste plastics into the blast furnace. Some trials based upon the theoretical approaches were applied to examine the efficiencies of blast furnace.

  • We fabricated test samples containing various shape elements and surface roughness checking points for the jewelry cast master patterns by employing the 3D computer aided design (CAD), selective laser sintering (SLS) rapid prototype (RP) with the DuraForm powders. We varied the alignment angle from $0^{\circ}$ to $10^{\circ}$ at a given layer thickness of 0.08 and 0.1mm, respectively, in RP operation. Dimensions of the shape elements as well as values of surface roughness are characterized by an optical microscope and a contact-scanning profilometer. Surface roughness values of the top and vertical face increased as the alignment angle increased, while the other roughness values and shape elements variation were not depending on the alignment angle. The resolution of the shape realization was enhanced as the layer thickness became smaller. The minimum diameter of the hole, common in jewelry design, was 1.2 mm, and the shrinkage became 12% at the 1.6 mm-diameter hole, Our results implied that we face down the proposed design elements with $0^{\circ}$ alignment angle, and consider the shrinkage effect of each shape element in DuraForm RP jewelry modeling.

  • The main emphasis of this study was to utilize thixoextrusion process for improving extrudability of 7075, 7003 Al wrought alloys and AZ31 Mg wrought alloy. The results of thixbextrusion experiments about microstructures and extrusion pressures were compared with conventional hot extrusion results. The maximum extrusion pressure of thixoextrusion was greatly decreased compared with that of conventional hot extrusion. It was pointed out that the extrusion temperature dependence of the maximum extrusion pressure was large and the influence of extrusion temperature on the improvement of extrudability was remarkable in thixoextrusion. This will contribute to extrudability in terms of extrusion pressure, which in turn means that shorter process time is required and smaller extrusion machine can be applied for the same operation. The elongated grains to extrusion direction were generally observed during conventional hot extrusion, while the thixoextruded microstructures were isotropic.

  • Vibrational motions of the compaction table were investigated to select the optimal operation conditions of sand filling and compaction for the EPC process. Their modes were measured at the nine points of the table with changing the relative rotation angles between the two eccentric mass vibrators which were attached parallel beneath the table. Well-defined vibration modes were measured at the center of the table but those of left and right sides of the table were distorted regardless of rotational angle differences. The distortion of vibration modes at both sides of the table were caused by the moment generated by offset positions of two eccentric masses. It was found that the uniform vibration modes would be gathered by controlling the relative distances between the rotating axis and the center of gravity in the compaction system at the various conditions of vibration modes and rotational angle differences.

  • The influences of some factors on the variation of compression strength of $CO_2$ process were investigated with an attention given to use of high $SiO_2\;/Na_2O$ silicate, addition of organics and gassing operation. 1) Higher ratio binder offers faster rates of hardening with lower $CO_2$ consumption requiring more concentration for a good strength development. A mixture containing 4 percent of 2.7:1 ratio silicate produces the strength above $8kg\;/\;cm^2$ after 80 seconds gassing, but 5% and 6% respectively of 3.0:1 and3.3:1 ratio silicate are necessary to achieve equivalent levels of strength. 2) The correct water content in sand mixtures containing higher ratio silicates is necessary for the better strength properties to be obtained. The addition of 1% water to the sand mixtures bonded with 5%,3:1 ratio and 6%,3.3:1 ratio silicates maintains near-maximum strength on extended gassing. 3) When higher ratio silicates with 3:1 and 3.3:1 ratios are used, the addition of organic additives such as oil, sucrose and polyol results in considerable changes in strength. The presence of 1.0 to 1.5 percent of polyol produces a noticiable improvement 4) Gas diluted with air raises the efficiency of gas utilization. When gas contains 50 percent $CO_2$, the efficience is significantly increased with the best strength in the silicates having high ratios of 3:1 and 3.3:1. 5) The strength of molds is liable to change on storage with the reduction in water content. The magnitude of the strength change is determinded with the mole ratio. The presence of polyol in the mixture with 3.3:1 ratio silicate has a pronounced effect on maintaining the gassed strength.

  • In this study, we introduce a novel TiN/Ag embedded TiO2/FTO resistive random-access memory (RRAM) device. This distinctive device was fabricated using an environmentally sustainable, solution-based thin film manufacturing process. Utilizing the peroxo titanium complex (PTC) method, we successfully incorporated Ag precursors into the device architecture, markedly enhancing its performance. This innovative approach effectively mitigates the random filament formation typically observed in RRAM devices, and leverages the seed effect to guide filament growth. As a result, the device demonstrates switching behavior at substantially reduced voltage and current levels, heralding a new era of low-power RRAM operation. The changes occurring within the insulator depending on Ag contents were confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Additionally, we confirmed the correlation between Ag and oxygen vacancies (Vo). The current-voltage (I-V) curves obtained suggest that as the Ag content increases there is a change in the operating mechanism, from the space charge limited conduction (SCLC) model to ionic conduction mechanism. We propose a new filament model based on changes in filament configuration and the change in conduction mechanisms. Further, we propose a novel filament model that encapsulates this shift in conduction behavior. This model illustrates how introducing Ag alters the filament configuration within the device, leading to a more efficient and controlled resistive switching process.

  • Power semiconductor devices had been producted with bipolar only processes, but Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS(BCD) processes have been adapted recently to fabricate these devices since most foundry companies have provided BCD processes instead of Bipolar only processes. In this study, Regulator and OP Amp are used as most popular design IPs and BCD processes for the designing are converted from bipolar only processes. Power Switching Sensor(PSS) ICs are designed specifically and fabricated on a silicon chip. The operation results of the packaged chip show the good matching with test results of the simulation.

  • Recently, the new technology for the recycling of waste plastics as an alternative he1 of blast furnace ha been developed. In this shldy, the test of plastics injection into a tuyere af the foundry blast furnace were carried out. The injection rate of plastics far this tcst facility war expressed as follows, ${W}_{s}=0.265\frac{{delta}PA}{U}_{g}$, where. Ws, AP, A and Ug are plastic conveying ratc (kgisec), pressure drop between feed hopper and blaqt pressure (alm), cross sectional area of conveying pipe (mi) and superficial velocity of transport air (mhzc) respcctiuely. From the results of semi-continuous test operation during 96 hours, the replacement raho mned out to be 1.38 according to the injection rate of 6. 4 kg-plasticsit-p. With increasing the rate of plaslics injcchon, the content of hydrogen in top gas became increased and the brick temperahlre at bzlly was also increased due to Lhe changes ot the combustion zone shape.
