  • This study aims at investigating the size-dependent free vibration of porous nanoplates when exposed to hygrothermal environment and rested on Kerr foundation. Based on the modified power-law model, material properties of porous functionally graded (FG) nanoplates are supposed to change continuously along the thickness direction. The generalized nonlocal strain gradient elasticity theory incorporating three scale factors (i.e. lower- and higher-order nonlocal parameters, strain gradient length scale parameter), is employed to expand the assumption of second shear deformation theory (SSDT) for considering the small size effect on plates. The governing equations are obtained based on Hamilton's principle and then the equations are solved using an analytical method. The elastic Kerr foundation, as a highly effected foundation type, is adopted to capture the foundation effects. Three different patterns of porosity (namely, even, uneven and logarithmic-uneven porosities) are also considered to fill some gaps of porosity impact. A comparative study is given by using various structural models to show the effect of material composition, porosity distribution, temperature and moisture differences, size dependency and elastic Kerr foundation on the size-dependent free vibration of porous nanoplates. Results show a significant change in higher-order frequencies due to small scale parameters, which could be due to the size effect mechanisms. Furthermore, Porosities inside of the material properties often present a stiffness softening effect on the vibration frequency of FG nanoplates.

  • With recent growing interests in the Performance-Based Seismic Design and Assessment Methodology, more realistic modeling of a structural system is deemed essential in analyzing, designing, and evaluating both newly constructed and existing buildings under seismic events. Consequently, a shallow foundation element becomes an essential constituent in the implementation of this seismic design and assessment methodology. In this paper, a contact interface fiber section element is presented for use in modeling soil-shallow foundation systems. The assumption of a rigid footing on a Winkler-based soil rests simply on the Euler-Bernoulli's hypothesis on sectional kinematics. Fiber section discretization is employed to represent the contact interface sectional response. The hyperbolic function provides an adequate means of representing the stress-deformation behavior of each soil fiber. The element is simple but efficient in representing salient features of the soil-shallow foundation system (sliding, settling, and rocking). Two experimental results from centrifuge-scale and full-scale cyclic loading tests on shallow foundations are used to illustrate the model characteristics and verify the accuracy of the model. Based on this comprehensive model validation, it is observed that the model performs quite satisfactorily. It resembles reasonably well the experimental results in terms of moment, shear, settlement, and rotation demands. The hysteretic behavior of moment-rotation responses and the rotation-settlement feature are also captured well by the model.

  • Full scale size model tests of the top-base foundation was performed in siwha marine clay and the site measurement results were compared with the analytical results from finite different programs, FLAC-2D to investigate the behavior of top-base foundation. The stress distribution obtained from the numerical analysis for the various types of foundation were compared and analysed during the application of allowable load as well as yield load. It was found that the top-base foundation prevents the lateral deformation of soft ground and stress dispersion effect to reduce the surface settlement, and that the foundation creates uniform stress distribution around it, therefore increasing bearing capacity.

  • Present investigation deals with the free vibration characteristics of nanoscale-beams resting on elastic Pasternak's foundation based on nonlocal strain-gradient theory and a higher order hyperbolic beam model which captures shear deformation effect without using any shear correction factor. The nanobeam is lying on two-parameters elastic foundation consist of lower spring layers as well as a shear layer. Nonlocal strain gradient theory takes into account two scale parameters for modeling the small size effects of nanostructures more accurately. Hamilton's principal is utilized to derive the governing equations of embedded strain gradient nanobeam and, after that, analytical solutions are provided for simply supported conditions to solve the governing equations. The obtained results are compared with those predicted by the previous articles available in literature. Finally, the impacts of nonlocal parameter, length scale parameter, slenderness ratio, elastic medium, on vibration frequencies of nanosize beams are all evaluated.

  • In this work, the thermal buckling characteristics of zigzag single-walled boron nitride (SWBNNT) embedded in a one-parameter elastic medium modeled as Winkler-type foundation are investigated using a nonlocal first-order shear deformation theory (NFSDT). This model can take into account the small scale effect as well as the transverse shear deformation effects of nanotubes. A closed-form solution for nondimensional critical buckling temperature is obtained in this investigation. Further the effect of nonlocal parameter, Winkler elastic foundation modulus, the ratio of the length to the diameter, the transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia on the critical buckling temperature are being investigated and discussed. The results presented in this paper can provide useful guidance for the study and design of the next generation of nanodevices that make use of the thermal buckling properties of boron nitride nanotubes.

  • Effect of thickness stretching on free vibration, bending and buckling behavior of carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (CNTRC) laminated nanoplates rested on new variable elastic foundation is investigated in this paper using a developed four-unknown quasi-3D higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). The key feature of this theoretical formulation is that, in addition to considering the thickness stretching effect, the number of unknowns of the displacement field is reduced to four, and which is more than five in the other models. Two new forms of CNTs reinforcement distribution are proposed and analyzed based on cosine functions. By considering the higher-order nonlocal strain gradient theory, microstructure and length scale influences are included. Variational method is developed to derive the governing equation and Galerkin method is employed to derive an analytical solution of governing equilibrium equations. Two-dimensional variable Winkler elastic foundation is suggested in this study for the first time. A parametric study is executed to determine the impact of the reinforcement patterns, nonlocal parameter, length scale parameter, side-t-thickness ratio and aspect ratio, elastic foundation and various boundary conditions on bending, buckling and free vibration responses of the CNTRC plate.

  • This paper studies application of modified couple stress theory and first order shear deformation theory to magneto-electro-mechanical vibration analysis of three-layered size-dependent curved beam. The curved beam is resting on Pasternak's foundation and is subjected to mechanical, magnetic and electrical loads. Size dependency is accounted by employing a small scale parameter based on modified couple stress theory. The magneto-electro-mechanical preloads are accounted in governing equations to obtain natural frequencies in terms of initial magneto-electro-mechanical loads. The analytical approach is applied to investigate the effect of some important parameters such as opening angle, initial electric and magnetic potentials, small scale parameter, and some geometric dimensionless parameters and direct and shear parameters of elastic foundation on the magneto-electro-elastic vibration responses.

  • In this paper, the behaviour of shell foundation was studied. In order to perform this study, three studies such as theoretical, numerical and experimental programs were performed. In the theoretical program, the general shallow foundation theories and failure mechanism developed by Terzaghi, Mayerhof and others were reviewed and compared. Based on the previous shallow foundation behaviour, the shell foundation theory was developed using the upper boundary theorem. In the numerical study, the 2 and 3 dimensional FEM simulations were carried out using an uncoupled-analysis approach. From the analysis results, the adequate depth of shell foundation was evaluated. It was also evaluated the bearing capacity according to the shell angle ($120^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$). In the experimental study, the laboratory model tests were carried out for five cases of different foundation shapes including the rectangular and circular foundation in order to verify the theoretical and nemerical study. According to the results of this study, the bearing capacity of shell foundation was theoretically about 15% larger than that of general foundation. However, in the model test, the bearing capacity of shell foundation was about 25 to 30% larger than that of general foundation. In the case of shell angle, the maximum bearing capacity of shell foundation shows when the shell angle of foundation was $60^{\circ}$. In addition, Even if the shell foundation has the various advantages compared with the general foundations as described above, the practical verifications in full scale size will be necessary to use in the field and will be helpful in the technical development of other special foundations.
