  • This paper presents seismic analysis of concrete gravity dams considering soil-structure-fluid interaction. Displacement based plane strain finite element formulation is considered for the dam and foundation domain whereas pressure based finite element formulation is considered for the reservoir domain. A direct coupling method has been adopted to obtain the interaction effects among the dam, foundation and reservoir domain to obtain the dynamic responses of the dam. An efficient absorbing boundary condition has been implemented at the truncation surfaces of the foundation and reservoir domains. A parametric study has been carried out considering each domain separately and collectively based on natural frequencies, crest displacement and stress at the neck level of the dam body. The combined frequency of the entire coupled system is very less than that of the each individual sub-system. The crest displacement and neck level stresses of the dam shows prominent enhancement when coupling effect is taken into consideration. These outcomes suggest that a complete coupled analysis is necessary to obtain the actual responses of the concrete gravity dam. The developed methodology can easily be implemented in finite element code for analyzing the coupled problem to obtain the desired responses of the individual subdomains.

  • Gene-editing is currently one of the most popular technologies in recent years. Development of the new crop using the gene editing have advantage of improved accuracy and efficiency compared with conventional breeding. Soybean (Glycine max L.) is one of the most important crops worldwide used as food and forage. We tried to establish a system for breeding improvement of soybean through gene-editing technology. For the gene-editing system of soybean, i) selection of efficiency gRNA of targeted gene, ii) efficient genetic transformation of the selected gRNA, iii) selection of trans-clean mutant is essential. First of all, we investigated the selection conditions of gRNA with high editing efficiency of targeted gene using isolated protoplast of soybean. Furthermore, we performed the Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation of various soybean cultivars. We identified the tissue culture ability in 23 soybean cultivars for genetic transformation of soybean. The six cultivars with high tissue culture ability were selected and confirmed the transgenic plants in four cultivars. Finally, we established a speed-breeding system as a powerful tool for the fast selection of trans-clean mutants from transgenic plants. Our laboratory will provide the valuable system for improvement of soybean by the gene-editing technology.

  • Free vibration of non-uniform embedded nanoplates based on classical (Kirchhoff's) plate theory in conjunction with nonlocal elasticity theory has been studied. The nanoplate is assumed to be rested on two-parameter Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundation. Non-uniform material properties of nanoplates have been considered by taking linear as well as quadratic variations of Young's modulus and density along the space coordinates. Detailed analysis has been reported for all possible casesof such variations. Trial functions denoting transverse deflection of the plate are expressed in simple algebraic polynomial forms. Application of the present method converts the problem into generalised eigen value problem. The study aims to investigate the effects of non-uniform parameter, elastic foundation, nonlocal parameter, boundary condition, aspect ratio and length of nanoplates on the frequency parameters. Three-dimensional mode shapes for some of the boundary conditions have also been illustrated. One may note that present method is easier to handle any sets of boundary conditions at the edges.

  • Using large monopod bucket foundations as an alternative to monopiles for offshore wind turbines offers the potential for large cost savings compared to typical piled foundations. In this paper, numerical simulations are carried out to assess the risk of structural buckling during installation of large-diameter bucket foundations. Since shell structures are generally sensitive to initially imperfect geometries, eigenmode-affine imperfections are introduced in a nonlinear finite-element analysis. The influence of modelling the real lid structure compared to classic boundary conditions is investigated. The effects of including soil restraint and soil-structure interaction on the buckling analysis are also addressed.

  • Micropile has been widely used for reinforcing general grounds, improving slope stability and structural foundations. However, a need still exists for evaluating the effects of inclined micropiles on shallow foundations in Korea. In this paper, numerical analyses were presented to evaluate settlement characteristics on shallow foundations reinforced by micropiles and the effects of inclined micropiles under various conditions such as the installation position, installation angle, hardness(diameter), and grouting type. In addition, this paper reports trends of effectiveness and efficiency of using inclined micropiles on shallow foundations under specified conditions.

  • This paper is to investigate the effects of support conditions on the whirling stability of a supercritical composite driveshaft. Two system parameters are rigorously considered: one is the bending stiffness of the support beam/bearings and the other is the rotating internal damping of the shaft. An analytic model is developed based on finite element methods and an eigenvalue analysis is employed to estimate the shaft stability under supercritical operating conditions. Results show that the internal damping causes the whirling instability at a supercritical speed, as demonstrated in other previous studies. However, the bending stiffness of the support beam is found to affect greatly the stability behaviors of a supercritical shaft and several combinations of the shaft/beam stiffness can be identified to guarantee the stable operation even in a supercritical region.

  • This article investigates buckling behavior of a multi-phase nanocrystalline nanobeam resting on Winkler-Pasternak foundation in the framework of nonlocal couple stress elasticity and a higher order refined beam model. In this model, the essential measures to describe the real material structure of nanocrystalline nanobeams and the size effects were incorporated. This non-classical nanobeam model contains couple stress effect to capture grains micro-rotations. Moreover, the nonlocal elasticity theory is employed to study the nonlocal and long-range interactions between the particles. The present model can degenerate into the classical model if the nonlocal parameter, and couple stress effects are omitted. Hamilton's principle is employed to derive the governing equations and the related boundary conditions which are solved applying an analytical approach. The buckling loads are compared with those of nonlocal couple stress-based beams. It is showed that buckling loads of a nanocrystalline nanobeam depend on the grain size, grain rotations, porosities, interface, elastic foundation, shear deformation, surface effect, nonlocality and boundary conditions.

  • In the analysis of deformation in which the stiffness is greatly different between the adjacent materials, the desired results have been obtained by using the interface element method compared with those secured by the conventional method of the concept of continua. This study deals with the deformation analysis of soft foundation by the introduction of interface element. The physical conditions of interface element are divided into three categories by Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion ie. sliding, separation, and contact. Finally the accuracy of the program proposed in this paper is proved highly accurate by performing the comparison of the theoretical values numerical results of a model element with simplified boundary conditions.

  • This study is concerned with the stability of laminated composite plates modelled using Eringen's nonlocal differential model (ENDM) and a novel refined-hyperbolic-shear-deformable plate theory. The plate is assumed to be lying on the Pasternak elastic foundation and is under the influence of an in-plane magnetic field. The governing equations and boundary conditions are obtained through Hamilton's principle. An analytical approach considering Navier series is used to fine the critical bucking load. After verifying with existing results for the reduced cases, the present model is then used to study buckling of the laminated composite plate. Numerical results demonstrate clearly for the first time the roles of size effects, magnetic field, foundation parameters, moduli ratio, geometry, lay-up numbers and sequences, fiber orientations, and boundary conditions. These results could be useful for designing better composites and can further serve as benchmarks for future studies on the laminated composite plates.

  • We consider the boundary value problem for the deflection of a finite beam on an elastic foundation subject to vertical loading. We construct a one-to-one correspondence from the set of equivalent well-posed two-point boundary conditions to gl(4, ℂ). Using , we derive eigenconditions for the integral operator M for each well-posed two-point boundary condition represented by M ∈ gl(4, 8, ℂ). Special features of our eigenconditions include; (1) they isolate the effect of the boundary condition M on Spec M, (2) they connect Spec M to Spec ,α,k whose structure has been well understood. Using our eigenconditions, we show that, for each nonzero real λ ∉ Spec ,α,k, there exists a real well-posed boundary condition M such that λ ∈ Spec M. This in particular shows that the integral operators M, arising from well-posed boundary conditions, may not be positive nor contractive in general, as opposed to ,α,k.
