Mattress foundations using geogrids are often used on soil foundations to increase the supporting capability of a mattress-soil foundation system, in which the mattress foundation trasmits a point load applied above to a wider area of the soil foundation underneath. To examine this load dispersion capability of the mattress foundation, model experiments were carried out on lab-floor. Expecially, the effect of the thickness of the mattress and the subgrade modulus of the soil foundation on load dispersion are considered. The load distribution and the tensile force generated on geogrid of the upper part of the mattress are examined in the paper.

Curved beams' dynamic behavior on viscoelastic foundation is the subject of the current paper. By rewritten the Timoshenko beams theory formulation for the curved and twisted spatial rods, governing equations are obtained for the circular beams on viscoelastic foundation. Using the complementary functions method (CFM), in Laplace domain, an ordinary differential equation is solved and then those results are transformed to real space by Durbin's algorithm. Verification of the proposed method is illustrated by solving an example by variating foundation parameters.

This paper provides readers with an attempt In applying expert systems to structural engineering. As a demonstrative domain to provide the pontentiality of expert system foundation design is presented. Foundation design can have less formalized phage in the overall design process, particularly during preliminary design. It depends on several factors: the function of the structure and the loads it must carry the subsurface conditions, and the cost of foundation, The expert system in the paper is to be used for determining the type of foundation.

The FAS protocol of FOUNDATION Fieldbus playes the roles of interface between Data Link Layer and application layer and establishment of connection between receiver and sender. In this study, the FAS protocol of FOUNDATION Fieldbus was developed. The method of implementation is described in this paper. Software of FAS protocol was implemented by Window-based program and DOS-based program for PC and sensor module, respectively.

This paper addresses on new codes of practice, limit state design; load resistance factored design and Eurocode 7, which have recently been adopted by foundation engineers in North America and European Communities. A brief description of the limit state design concepts and some introductions to Australia and Sweden national code for pile foundation are made on behalf of pile capacity determination. Also, simple closed form solution for rational resistance factor when resistance is log-normally distributed, has been derived for pile foundation.

Settlement in the Shallow Foundation are presented. Various practical methods to calculate immediate settlement, consolidation settlement, and secondary compression of the compressive soils under the shallow foundation are summerized. Especially the critical depth for settlement calculation, the contact pressure, the allowable settlement of the shallow foundation are recommended.
