  • The world's major countries have focused on the renewable energy industry as the solution to climate change and the energy crisis. Nevertheless, there are no studies on the economic effects of the renewable energy industry. This study analyzed the economic effects of Korea's renewable energy industry by using the 2010 Input-Output Table. It is estimated that Korea's renewable energy industry made a production-induced effect of 2.0262 won, and a value-added-induced effect of 0.6138 won through an increase in output growth of 1 won, and an employment-induced effect of 2.3046 labors through an increase in output growth of 1 billion won. Both the effect ratio and the response ratio were greater than 1, which means the renewable energy industry is an intermediate manufacturing industry whose forward linkage effect and backward linkage effects are large. These results show differences with previous studies that classified electricity sector and renewable energy industry into final primary production industries. It is expected that the economic effects of the renewable energy industry will become greater in the future. Therefore, research on statistics related to the renewable energy industry is needed for more precise analysis.

  • In these days, the interest on medical industry is increasing around the world. This paper attempts to estimate the economic effects of the medical and measuring instrument industry through the Input-Output Analysis. Especially, 78*78 Sector Tables were used as the first analysis tool. So then, 79*79 Sector Tables adjusted were used for that industry. The main analysis tools of this study are comparing and analyzing backward and forward linkage effect, the induced effect of the self industry and other industries and the induced coefficients such as products, value-added, employee's pay, sales surplus, employment. According to the result of analysis, the medical and measuring instrument industry has great economic impacts which affects the major macroeconomic factors such as production and backward linkage effect. And the induced effects of the self medical and measuring instrument industry are significant compared to other industries in aspects of production, employee's pay and sales surplus.

  • In the global manufacturing industry, digital transformation is emerging as an important issue for companies to improve productivity and strengthen industrial competitiveness. The government and shipbuilding companies drive research and development to attain advanced technologies through digital transformation for shipbuilding & offshore plants, one of Korea's representative manufacturing industries. Therefore, the digital transformation of the shipbuilding & offshore plant industry was defined using an input-output analysis model, and the economic interrelationships of industries linked to the digital transformation of the shipbuilding & offshore plant industry were analyzed. According to the analysis, the shipbuilding & offshore plant industry ranks second among all 34 industries regarding the forward linkage effect. The backward linkage effect was ranked 27th, making it a mid-demand industry with a robust forward linkage effect. In addition, the production-induced effect was 0.455, the value-added-induced effect was 0.174, and the employment-induced effect was 1.779 people per billion won. The contribution of this study is that it will provide the basis for establishing policies necessary to strengthen the competitiveness of the shipbuilding & offshore plant industry. Also, it will help analyze the economic effects of digital transformation in other manufacturing industries.

  • This paper estimate and analyze the economic effect of the port industries as well its production inducement coefficient, effect ratio and response ratio using above-mention input-output analysis. The results of analysis is that the production inducement effects and the forward and backward linkage effects of port industries sectors are evaluated low evaluations. This results is not the port industry doesn't have low effects and low contributions to Korea economy, port industries are more used in the field of export and import sectors than domestic demand and supply sectors. Accordingly, the import inducement coefficients of shipping industry is most high among the 404 detailed sectors.

  • This paper is concerned with a comparative study on the economic effects upon the Korean economy by transport mode, ie road, rail, air, and coastal and inland water transportation between 1990 and 2000, using input-output analysis. The economic effects consist of backward and forward linkage effects, production inducing and import-inducing effects. The data employed for this study come from the Bank of Korea database for Input-Output structure of the Korean economy. The major findings in this study are, among others:(1) the power of dispersion(=backward linkage effect) of coastal and inland water transportation sector is the highest among the four transport sectors, while road cargo transport mode showed the highest the degree of sensitivity (=forward linkage effect); (2) rail cargo transport recorded the highest production inducing effects; and (3) air transport mode achieved the highest ranking in the import-inducing effects.

  • This paper uses input-output techniques to analyze the impacts of the coastal and inland water transportation (CIWT) upon the Korean economy between 1990 and 2000. The impacts were identified by means of backward and forward linkages effects, production inducing and import-inducing effects, and commodity prices repercussion effects of the coastal and inland water transportation. The data of this study come from The Bank of Korea databases for Input-Output Structure of the Korean economy. The major findings in this study can, among others, be summarized: that the power of dispersion(=backward linkage effect) and the degree of sensitivity (=forward linkage effect) of CIWT are higher than those of the deep sea transportation sector and that it has higher production-inducing effect than the average of total industries, while it has lower import-inducing effect than the average of total industries.

  • Although there is growing literature evidence of linkages between global value chains (GVCs) and foreign direct investment (FDI), the results are mixed and ambiguous by geographic dimension, time period and sectoral scope. Moreover, bilateral approaches on these connections have been rarely analyzed. In this context, we investigate the effect of bilateral greenfield FDI and cross-border M&A on GVC linkages between host countries and source countries. We match three-year averages of bilateral FDI and UNCTAD-Eora GVC value-added data from 2005 to 2019 between 37 OECD sources and 176 host countries (37 OECD versus 139 non-OECD countries). In the structural gravity model, the empirical specification includes bilateral and country-period fixed effects and uses a Poisson Pseudo-Maximum Likelihood (PPML) estimator. We find that greenfield and M&A FDI promote forward and backward GVC linkage for all sectors between OECD countries, whereas greenfield FDI promotes backward GVC linkage between OECD and non-OECD countries. In addition, the results indicate that the degree of influence of GVCs by FDI flows is greater for forward GVC than backward GVC among OECD countries.

  • Objectives : Recently, concern about the ubiquitous healthcare industry has increased worldwide. This study estimated the economic effects of the ubiquitous healthcare industry by Input-Output Analysis. Methods : In this study, $384^*384$ sector statistics of the Bank of Korea were used as the initial analysis tool, after adjustments, $9^*9$ sector statistics were used as the major research method for that industry. The main analysis tools of this study included a comparison of the backward and forward linkage effects, as well as the induced effects of the self-industry and other industries and the induced coefficients including products, value-added, employee's pay, sales surplus, and employment. Results : Based on the results of the analysis, the ubiquitous healthcare industry has great economic impacts which affects major macroeconomic factors including production and the backward linkage effect. Additionally, the induced effects of the self-industry, the ubiquitous healthcare industry, are significant compared to other industries in terms of production, employee's pay and operating surplus. Conclusions : The ubiquitous healthcare industry is a growth engines for national development. This paper offers alternatives for efficient industrial policies.
