  • This paper investigates how strategy formulation and implementation processes used by the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in building its digital collections compare with the Andrew's strategic formulation and implementation theoretical framework. Theory-testing case study methodology was used. The data collection instruments were the key informant interview technique and document reviews. During the formulation phase, two aspects (resources and aspirations of senior management) were emergent. During the implementation phase, five aspects (achieving results, processes and behaviour, standards, motivation, personal) were emergent. All other elements of building the UCC digital collections were planned during both the formulation and implementation phases. Although the emphasis on students and learning is laudable and apt, there seems to be lack of focus on research support beyond digital collection building, despite the fact that research excellence is one of the UCC's key priorities. Opportunities exist for improving feedback mechanisms between the users, digital library staff and the university management; and inclusion of social media tools in the digital library project. Since only the experience of a single institution of higher learning is considered, it cannot be definitively stated that strategy formulation and implementation will be similar in every institutional context. However, the results provide a basis for academic digital libraries to draw lessons from this case. In African public universities, there is little earlier research on strategy formulation and implementation in digital library management. Strategy formulation and implementation is a critical issue for higher education academic libraries especially in developing countries like Ghana, due to limited financial resources and the rapid change in the information environment during the last several decades.

  • The bifurcation problem of thin walled structures in contact with rigid surfaces is formulated by adopting the multiple scales asymptotic technique. The general theory developed in this paper is very useful for the bifurcation analysis of waviness instabilities in the sheet metal forming. The formulation is presented in a full Lagrangian formulation. Through this general formulation, the bifurcation functional is derived within an error of O($(E^4)$) (E: shell's thickness parameter). This functional can be used in numerical solutions to sheet metal forming instability problem.

  • A rubber-like material model is generally characterized by hyperelasticity and formulated by a total stress-total strain relationship because the material shows nonlinear elastic behaviour under large deformation. In this study, a pressure potential obtained by a separately interpolated pressure is introduced to the non-linear finite element formulation incorporating with incompressible or almost incompressible condition of the material. The present formulation is somewhat different from the general formulation using the pressure computed in the displacement field. A non-linear finite element analysis program is developed for the plane strain and the axisymmetric contact problems of a rubber-like material. Various examples with rubber material are analyzed for its verification. The results about deformed shapes and stress distributions thought to be meaningful in comparison with a commercial program, MARC.

  • Transient linear elastodynamic problems are numerically analyzed in a time-domain by the Finite Element Method, for which the variational formulation based upon the equations of motion in convolution integral is newly derived. This formulation is implicit and does not include the time derivative terms so that the computation procedure is simple and less assumptions are required comparing to the conventional time-domain dynamic numerical algorithms, being able to get the improved numerical accuracy and stability. That formulation is expanded using the semi-discrete approximation to obtain the finite element equations. In the temporal approximation, the time axis is divided equally and constant and linear time variations are assumed in those intervals. It is found that unconditionally stable numerical results are obtained in case of the constant time variation. Some numerical examples are given to show the versatility of the presented formulation.

  • The occurrence of detrimental substances in the paper machine leads to reduced economic performance of paper mills through reduced capacities due to increased paper breaks and cleaning times. In this article the latest generation of BASF's laser optical pitch particle counter is employed in the examination of a paper mill operating two paper machines and using a mixture of thermo-mechanical pulp and recycled fibres. The potential of the new instrument to differentiate between particles on the basis of size and chemical composition is discussed. In addition, direct evidence of the periodic and locational variation of detrimental substances in the paper machine is given. Finally, an example of the application of BASF's laser optical pitch particle counter in the selection of a suitable fixative system for a complex furnish is presented.

  • The unsymmetric finite element formulation has been proposed recently to improve predictions from distorted finite elements. Studies have also shown that this special formulation using parametric functions for the test functions and metric functions for the trial functions works surprisingly well because the former satisfy the continuity conditions while the latter ensure that the stress representation during finite element computation can retrieve in a best-fit manner, the actual variation of stress in the metric space. However, a question that remained was whether the unsymmetric formulation was variationally correct. Here we determine that it is not, using the simplest possible element to amplify the principles.

  • Preconditioners for a two-dimensional combined finite element formulation have been devised and tested for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. The FSI code simulating the interaction of a elastic body with an unsteady flow is based on P2P1 finite element combined formulation. It has been shown that two preconditioners among them perform well with respect to computational memory and convergence for a bench-mark problem. Based on the verification of the preconditioners for the two-dimensional combined formulation, four preconditioners are proposed for the problem of an elastic body interacting with a flow.

  • Multibody dynamics formulation has been developed based on relative cartesian coordinates for subsystem analysis. Relative cartesian coordinates are defined with respect to a reference body of a subsystem. Relative cartesian formulation inherits the same merits of absolute cartesian formulation, such as generality and easy implementation. Two methods have been applied. One is Largrange Multiplier Elimination method and the other is independent coordinate method. A 1/4 car simulation has been carried out to verify the formulations. Since both methods provide identical results, it proves the validity of the formulation.

  • In cosmetic formulations, texture plays a key role in ingredient choice and formulation optimization. But texture parameters are often measured by sensorial analysis in the last stages of formulation development. Rheology or texture analysis, used separately, has the benefit of characterizing the behavior of raw materials (e.g. polymers) and controlling and predicting the stability of formulations. SEPPIC has developed rheology and texture analysis protocols to obtain a better understanding of the influence of raw materials on the cosmetic texture of formulations. When used in combination, these two methodologies are complementary and provide useful data regarding the impact of raw material choice on all the development steps: manufacturing procedure, formulation stability, skin feeling.
