  • The microstructures of rapidly solidified binary Ti-Al alloys containing $45{\sim}58\;at%Al$ have been studied using C/S (carbon/sulfur), N/O (nitrogen/oxygen) analyser, X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), optical microscope (OM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The phases present in the alloys and their distribution were found to be a sensitive function of Al content. Essentially single-phase (${\gamma}$) microstructures were observed to alloys with 45 at%Al, 55 at%Al and 58 at%Al. In other content alloys, two phase (${\alpha}_2$, ${\gamma}$) microstructures were observed. The 48 at%Al, 52 at%Al alloys contain (${\gamma}+{\alpha}_2$) phase and ${\alpha}_2$ phase. These results indicate that rapid solidification affect the solidification path, then metastable phase forming during solidification.

  • Crowbar system is usually applied to a pulsed power system in which a capacitor bank is discharged into a load. This provides a free wheeling path for the load current and prevents the capacitor from recharging due to a reverse voltage. Usually diodes have been used as a crowbar switch, but it is not a practical system because the cost of the diodes goes up enormously with increasing the system voltage and current. This paper presents a novel protection scheme of a charging and discharging system of a 300 kJ capacitor bank using a low-cost crowbar system which consists of a crowbar switch and resistors. Triggered vacuum switch(TVS) was used for a crowbar switch, and Rogowski coil was used to determine a trigger time of TVS. When this crowbar system is applied to our pulsed power system which consists of capacitor bank($123muF$), inductor() for forming a pulse, load resistor$(100 m\Omega)$, and a closing switch, instantaneous reversal voltage of capacitor bank could be limited less than 1.8 ㎸ until capacitor bank was charred to 17 ㎸.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze Alva Aalto's libraries for understanding his efficient induction of natural light. To fulfill this purpose, Alvar Aalto's thought about library and natural light are examined through his working years and building types. The comparison of his libraries on usage of natural light shows different ways of natural light induction based on different locations and programs of libraries. Similarities and differences of Alvar Aalto's library architecture have strong relationship to the usage of natural light in libraries because Alvar Aalto himself regard reading as the core function of library and the efficient use of natural light is the main key of reading. In his natural light planning, regional characteristics including environmental factors and programmatic differences act as a basic standard for natural light plan. Especially, altitude of sun and its path, seasonal features affect the induction way of natural light. While conical skylights used at Viipuri library shows the characteristics of universality in Modernism architecture, later libraries presents not only various kinds of pan-shape plan but different ways of inducing natural light in according to appropriate function. From conical skylight to monitor with curved reflection wall make it possible shed diffused light to reading space and this affects to form Alvar Aalto's organic architecture. As a result, using natural light in Alvar Aalto's library architecture act as the core of forming library concepts and their development.

  • We propose a novel method of procedurally generating climbing plants using L-systems. The goal of this research is to generate geometry for 3D-modelers, where procedurally generated content is used as a base for the final design. The algorithm is fast and efficiently simulates external tropisms such as gravitropism and heliotropism, as well pseudo-tropisms. The structure of the generated climbing plants is discretized into strings of particles expressed using L-systems. The tips of the plant extend the branches by adding particles in its path, forming internodes. A climbing heuristic has been developed that uses the environment as leverage when the plant is climbing, and effectively covers objects on which it grows. A fast method that sprouts leaves on the surface on which the plant is growing has also been developed, along with a heuristic that simulates the decrease in length, radius and leaf size.

  • In most computer networks, each node needs to have correct routing information for finding shortest paths to forward data packets. In a distributed environment, however, it is very difficult to keep consistent routing information throughout the whole network at all times. The presence of out-dated routing information can cause loop-forming which in turn causes the significant degradation of network performance. In this paper, a new class of routing algorithm for loop detection and resolution is discussed. The proposed algorithm is based on the distributed Bellman-Ford algorithm which is popularly adopted for routing in computer network. The proposed algorithm detects and resolves all kinds( two-node and multi-node) of loop in a distributed environment within finite time while maintaining the simplicity of the distributed Bellman-Ford algorithm.

  • Organic-inorganic composite membranes based on sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone) (sPPES)/silica hybrid were prepared using the sol-gel process under acidic conditions. The sulfonation of PPES with concentrated sulfuric acid as sulfonation agent was carried out to prepare proton exchange membrane material. The behaviors of the proton conductivity and methanol permeability are depended on the sulfonation time (5-100 hr). The hybrid membranes composed of highly sulfonated PPES (IEC value: 1.42 meq./g) and silica were fabricated from different silica content (5-20 wt%) in order to achieve desirable proton conductivity and methanol permeability demanded for fuel cell applications. The silica particles within membranes were used for the purpose of blocking excessive methanol cross-over and for forming the path way to transport of the proton due to absorbing water molecules with ≡SiOH on silica. The presence of silica particles in the organic polymer matrix results in hybrid membranes with reduced methanol permeability and improved proton conductivity.

  • We suggested new PDP packaging technology using the direct joint method, which does not need an exhausting hole and tube. The advantages of this method are simple process, short process time and time panel package. To packaging, we drew the seal line of glass frit by dispenser followed by forming the lump, which provide pumping-out path during the packaging process. And, we have performed a pretreatment of glass frit to reduce the out-gases. After which, both front and rear glass plates were aligned and loaded into vacuum packaging chamber. The 4-inch monochrome AC-PDP was successfully packaged and fully emitted with brightness of 1000 $cd/m^2$. Also, glass frit properties for pretreatment condition was investigated by AES and SEM analyses.

  • Diamond films including nanocystalline and graphite phase are grown by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition using $N_2$ additives and negative substrate bias at growth step. The microstructure of the films is controlled by changing $N_2$ gas ratio and negative bias. Defects and grain boundaries between diamond and graphite are proposed to be crucial factors for forming the conducting path of electron emissions. The effect of growth parameters on the film microstructure are investigated by Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Electron emission characteristics are also examined in terms of the film growth conditions.

  • In this study, shear fracture specimens are designed using finite element analyses for the characterization of ductile fracture criteria of metal sheets. Many recently suggested ductile fracture criteria require experimental fracture data at the shear stress states in the model parameter identification. However, it is challenging to maintain shear stress states in tension-based specimens from the initial yield to the final fracture, and the loading path can be different for the different materials even with the same shear specimen geometries. To account for this issue, two different shear fracture specimens for low ductility/high ductility metal sheets are designed using the sensitivity tests conducted by finite element simulations. Priorly mechanical properties including the Hosford-Coulomb fracture criterion of the aluminum alloy 7075-T6 and DP590 steel sheets are used in the simulations. The results show that shear stress states are well-maintained until the fracture at the fracture initiation points by optimizing the notch geometries of the shear fracture specimens.
