  • It is difficult to estimate the properties of multilayered sheet because they are composed of one or more different materials. Plastic deformation behavior of the multilayered sheet is quite different as compared to each material individually. The deformation behavior of multilayered sheet should be investigated in order to prevent forming defects and to predict the properties of the formed part. In this study, the mechanical properties and formability of stainless steel-aluminum-magnesium multilayered sheet were investigated. The multilayered sheet needs to be deformed at an elevated temperature because of its poor formability at room temperature. Uniaxial tensile tests were performed at various temperatures and strain rates. Fracture patterns changed mainly at a temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. Uniform and total elongation of multilayered sheet increased to values greater than those of each material when deformed at $250^{\circ}C$. The limiting drawing ratio (LDR) was obtained using a circular cup deep drawing test to measure the formability of the multilayered sheet. A maximum value for the LDR of about 2 was achieved at $250^{\circ}C$, which is the appropriate forming temperature for the Mg alloy. Fracture patterns on a circular cup and thickness of formed part were predicted by a rigid-viscoplastic FEM analysis. Two kinds of modeling techniques were used to simulate deep drawing process of multilayered sheet. A single-layer FE-model, which combines the three different layers into a macroscopic single layer, predicted well the thickness distribution of the drawn cup. In contrast, the location and the time of fracture were estimated better with a multi-layer FE model, which used different material properties for each of the three layers.

  • Partial reinforcement of sheet metal parts with CFRP patch is a technology that can realize ultra-lightweight body parts while overcoming the high material cost of carbon fiber. Performing these patchworks with highly productive press equipment solves another issue of CFRP: high process costs. The A-pillar is the main body part and has an undercut shape for fastening with other parts such as roof panels and doors. Therefore, it is difficult to bond CFRP patches to the A-pillar with a general press forming tool. In this paper, a flexible system that applies uniform pressure to complex shapes using ceramic particles and silicone rubber is proposed. By benchmarking various A-pillars, a reference model with an undercut shape was designed, and the system was configured to realize a uniform pressure distribution in the model. The ceramic spherical particles failed to realize the uniform distribution of high pressure due to their high hardness and point contact characteristics, which caused damage to the CFRP patch. Compression equipment made of silicone rubber was able to achieve the required pressure level for curing the epoxy. Non-adhesion defects between the metal and the CFRP patch were confirmed in the area where the bending deformation occurred. This defect could be eliminated by optimizing the process conditions suitable for the newly developed flexible system.

  • The conversion of carbon preforms to dense SiC by liquid infiltration is a prospectively low-cost and reliable method of forming SiC-Si composites with complex shapes and high densities. Si powder was coated on top of a 2.0wt.% Y2O3-added carbon preform, and reaction bonded silicon carbide (RBSC) was prepared by infiltrating molten Si at 1,450℃ for 1-8 h. Reactive sintering of the Y2O3-free carbon preform caused Si to be pushed to one side, thereby forming cracking defects. However, when prepared from the Y2O3-added carbon preform, a SiC-Si composite in which Si is homogeneously distributed in the SiC matrix without cracking can be produced. Using the Si + C → SiC reaction at 1,450℃, 3C and 6H SiC phases, crystalline Si, and Y2O3 were generated based on XRD analysis, without the appearance of graphite. The RBSC prepared from the Y2O3-added carbon preform was densified by increasing the density and decreasing the porosity as the holding time increased at 1,450℃. Dense RBSC, which was reaction sintered at 1,450℃ for 4 h from the 2.0wt.% Y2O3-added carbon preform, had an apparent porosity of 0.11% and a relative density of 96.8%.

  • We have investigated the effect of forming gas annealing for Upgraded Metallurgical Grade (UMG)-silicon solar cell in order to obtain low-cost high-efficiency cell using post deposition anneal at a relatively low temperature. We have observed that high concentration hydrogenation effectively passivated the defects and improved the minority carrier lifetime, series resistance and conversion efficiency. It can be attributed to significantly improved hydrogen-passivation in high concentration hydrogen process. This improvement can be explained by the enhanced passivation of silicon solar cell with antireflection layer due to hydrogen re-incorporation. The results of this experiment represent a promising guideline for improving the high-efficiency solar cells by introducing an easy and low cost process of post hydrogenation in optimized condition.

  • Tube hydroforming is a technology that utilizes hydraulic pressure to form a tube into desired shapes inside die cavities. Due to its advantages, such as weight reduction, increased strength, improved quality, and reduced tooling cost, single-layered tube hydroforming is widely used in industry. However in some special applications, it is necessary to produce multi-layered tubular components which have corrosion resistance, thermal resistance, conductivity, and abrasion resistance. In this study, a hollow forming process to fabricate a part from multi-layered tubes for structural purposes is proposed. To accomplish a successful hydroforming process, an analytical model that predicts optimal load path for various parameters such as tube material properties, thickness of tubes, diameter of holes and the number of holes was developed. Tubular hydroforming experiments to fabricate a hollow part were performed and the optimal loading path developed by the analytical model was successfully verified. The results show that the proposed hydroforming process can effectively produce hollow parts with multi-layered tube without defects such as wrinkling or fracture.

  • Strip casted and rolled magnesium sheet is become exiting material for car manufacturer, due to its better formability and specific strength compare with conventional extruded sheet. TWB technology was attractive for car body designer, because it saves the weight of the car without strength loss. In this study, the laser welding performance of magnesium sheet was investigated for Mg TWB panel manufacturing. The material was strip casted and rolled magnesium alloy sheet contains 3 wt% Al and 1 wt% Zn (AZ31). Lamp pumped Nd:YAG laser of 2kW was used and its laser light was delivered by optical fiber of 0.6mm core diameter to material surface with focusing optics of 200mm focal length for TWB welding. The microstructure of weld bead was investigated to check internal defects such as inclusion, porosity and cracks. Also mechanical properties and formability were evaluated for press forming of car body. For the results, there was no crack but inclusion or porosity on weld at some conditions. The tensile strength of weld was over 95% of base metal. Inner and outer panel of engine hood were press formed and assembled at elevated temperature.

  • As semi-solid forging (SSF) is compared with conventional casting such as gravity die-casting and squeeze casting, the product without inner defects can be obtained from semi-solid forming and globular microstructure as well. Generally, SSF consists of reheating, forging, and ejecting processes. In the reheating process, the materials are heated up to the temperature between the solidus and liquidus line at which the materials exists in the form of liquid-solid mixture. The process variables such as reheating time, reheating temperature, reheating holding time, and induction heating power has large effect on the quality of the reheated billets. It is difficult to consider all the variables at the same time for predicting the quality. In this paper, Taguchi method, regression analysis and neural network were applied to analyze the relationship between processing conditions and solid fraction. A356 alloy was used for the present study, and the learning data were extracted from the reheating experiments. Results by neural network were in good agreement with those by experiment. Polynominal regression analysis was formulated using the test data from neural network. Optimum processing condition was calculated to minimize the grain size and solid fraction standard deviation or to maximize the specimen temperature average. Discussion is given about reheating process of row material and results are presented with regard to accurate process variables fur proper solid fraction, specimen temperature and grain size.

  • In this paper, we describe fire risk of Kimchi refrigerator. The Kimchi refrigerator has been widely spread and used starting from the first half of 2000 and recently fire accidents caused by the Kimchi refrigerator emerged as social concern. In particular, in products of a specific manufacturer, it is not an environmental factor, but a characteristic that the fire is caused due to a defect of the product itself is shown. These features are judged to be formed by unique defects regardless of external factor by forming electrically arc mark in the relay element. In this paper, we analyzed the cause of the fire occurring in the Kimchi refrigerator and finally confirmed the characteristic that the fire occurred mainly in the relay element due to insufficient capacity of the relay element. Therefore, when a fire occurs in a product of the same maker as the Kimchi refrigerator mentioned in this paper, it is always judged that the inspection of the relay element should be carried out.

  • A defect in an image is a set of pixels forming an irregular shape. Since a defect, in most cases, is not easy to be modeled mathematically, the defect detection problem still resides in a research area. If a given image, however, composed by certain patterns, a defect can be detected by the fact that a non-defect area should be explained by another patch in terms of a rotation, translation, and noise. In this paper, therefore, the defect detection method for a repeated multi-patterned image is proposed. The proposed defect detection method is composed of three steps. First step is the interest point detection step, second step is the selection step of a appropriate patch size, and the last step is the decision step. The proposed method is illustrated using SEM images of semiconductor wafer samples.

  • A computer-aided alloy-designing technique to develop the insert metal for transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding was applied to high aluminum Ni-base superalloys. The main procedure of a mathematical programming method was to obtain the optimal chemical composition through rationally compromising the plural objective performances of insert metal by a grid-search which involved data estimation from the limited experimental data using interpolation method. The objective function Z which was introduced as an index of bonding performance of insert metal involved the melting point, hardness (strength), formability of brittle phases and void ratio (bonding defects) in bond layer as the evaluating factors. The contour maps of objective function Z were also obtained applying the interpolation method. The compositions of Ni-3.0%Cr-4.0%B-0.5%Ce (for ${\gamma}$/${\gamma}$/${\beta}$ type alloy) and Ni3.5%Cr-3.5%B-3%Ti (for ${\gamma}$/${\gamma}$ type alloy) which optimized the objective function were determined as insert metal. SEM observations revealed that the microstructure in bond layers using the newly developed insert metals indicated quite sound morphologies without forming microconstituents and voids. The creep rupture properties of both joints were much improved compared to a commercial insert metal of MBF-80 (Ni-15.5%Cr-3.7%B), and were fairly comparable to those of base metals.
