  • For the application of ectomycorrhizal seedlings on damaged slope lands, studies on cultural characteristics of Lyophyllum shimeji and ectomycorrhizal associations of Lespedeza cyrtobotrya seedlings were carried out by artificial inoculation of L. shimeji. Mycelial growth of L. shimeji was best on MP (1% malt extract, 0.1% peptone, 1% glucose and 1.5% agar) medium. An optimum temperature and pH for the mycelial growth were $25^{\circ}C$ and pH6, respectively. Mycorrhizal root of L. cyrtobotrya seedlings inoculated with L. shimeji showed characteristics of ectomycorrhizas with Hartig net. Growth rate of the mycorrhizal seedlings's roots was higher than that of non-mycorrhizal seedlings. When the mycorrhizal seedlings were transplanted in slope land, survival rate and dry weight were 62% and 850 mg/seedling, respectively. On the other hand, survival rate and dry weight of non-mycorrhizal seedlings were 11% and 430 mg/seedling, respectively.

  • One-year-old rooted cuttings of ten poplar clones and one willow clone were planted in a riparian area in Osan. Survival rate, growth performance, biomass, vitality, defoliation, leaf damages by diseases and/or insects and stem borer damage of the poplar and willow clones have been investigated for three growing seasons. Average survival rate of all eleven clones was declined from 80.7% for the first year to 60.7% for the third year. At three years after planting, poplar clones Dorskamp, ST-148 and Eco-28 showed the best survival rate of 80%. For height and DBH growth, the poplar clone Ay-48 and the willow clone 131-25 were the highest 8.3m and 9.5cm, respectively. However, poplar clones 72-30 and 72-31 were lower than those of the other clones. Clones Ay-48 and 131-25 seemed to have strong vitality when compare to the other clones. No serious damages by diseases and insects were found in most clones. Clones Ay-48 and ST-148 were the most tolerant to various diseases and insects. Clone Ay-48 produced the largest biomass for individual and annual total biomass, 22.5kg and 18.7ton $ha^{-1}$, respectively. Clone Dorskamp showed the best adaptability, which was estimated with survival rate, biomass and damages by various diseases and insects in the riparian area and followed by clones Ay-48, 97-19 and Eco-28. As a consequence, the four clones seemed to be the best candidate poplar clones for the establishment of riparian woody buffer.

  • Wild garlic (Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum, AVVP) is a nontimber forest product used as an edible and medicinal vegetable. AVVP is usually propagated form offspring bulbs but it takes a long time to harvest. Using tissue culture technology could overcome this problem. This study investigated the optimal conditions for shoot multiplication, root growth, and plant growth by scooping AVVP bulbs. AVVP bulbs harvested from Ulleung Island, Korea, the main producer of AVVP, were surface-sterilized and used for in vitro propagation. Shoot multiplication was performed by the scooping method. More than five multiple shoots were induced from scooped tissue in Quoirin and Lepoivre (QL) medium containing plant growth regulators (PGRs); the maximum number of multiple shoots were induced from scooped tissue in QL medium containing 0.45 μM thidiazuron (TDZ) after 16 weeks of culture. Roots were induced directly at the base of the shoots in all treatments. In vitro rooting depended on the type of PGRs, and the best root-inducing treatment was QL medium containing 9.84 μM indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). Plants with in vitro roots were transferred to pots containing artificial soil and successfully acclimatized for 4 weeks. The acclimatized plants showed a survival rate of 80% after 20 weeks and gradually promoted growth depending on the acclimatization period. The results of this study will be of great help to AVVP dissemination through sustainable mass propagation.

  • Forest resources are the most important element that can affect the nature environment directly in modern society. Due to the fast industrialization of our country and marginal states like China, many people suffer torments from severe environmental pollution like yellow and fine dusts everyday recently. So the interests concerned about the significance of nature and environment become major issue nowadays. Precious forest resources, however, are not properly managed and destroyed vainly due to frequent mountain fires, damages by floods, and unplanned land development in real world. Therefore, efficient forest management is required to solve these problems effectively. In this research, we design and implement the forest information database that can predict the growth of forest resources and enables us to manage forest resources efficiently, make decision for logging, build the waterway to prevent flooding, and construct a future tree-planting project easily using forest aerial photograph taken by a drone in order to deploy and manage the forest resources scientifically and systematically.

  • This study was carried out to determine the effects of light controls and leaf mold on root growth and physiological responses of Atractylodes japonica growing in forest farming. The experiment was performed by light controls (100%, 62.5%, 40.3% and 19.7% of full sunlight) and application of leaf mold to soil. Height, stem diameter, number of flower buds and root collar diameter were the highest in leaf mold within 62.5% of full sunlight (relative light intensity 62.5%). And these were the higher in leaf mold within each light level. As the shading level increased, light saturation point and maximum photosynthesis rate decreased. As the light level decreased, SPAD value increased in control and leaf mold. As a result of surveying the whole experiment, A. japonica was judged worse root growth under the lower light level. It was concluded that the light level was one of the most important factors to produce A. japonica. Also, producing high-quality of A. japonica with the price competitiveness by using leaf mold like the experiment can be an effective way to increase incomes for farmers.

  • To provide the basic data essential for developing varieties of broad-leaved tree, the study investigated the utmost growth requirement for the growth characteristic and biomass production in accordance with planting density of Styrax obassia. The planting density of seedling can be a significant factor in contributing growth of seedling for tree growing in general. While growth of tree according to $1m^2$ planting density of Styrax obassia showed an excellent growth in tree height and the root collar diameter from $49no./m^2$, those low planting density showed decreased tendency with tree height growth while increasing the root collar diameter growth. As similar to the growth characteristic, the biomass production showed significant and statistic difference in $49no./m^2$, showing high volume of biomass production which is $3.12{\pm}0.80g$ compare to other processing section and high figure with T/R ratio which is 1.59. The special trait of photosynthetic also showed relatively high photosynthetic rate in $49no./m^2\;and\;64no./m^2$ of Styrax obassia and as the density increase, photosynthetic efficiency decreased. The plant showed stable and physiological planting pattern, displaying the best photosynthetic rate, which was the final metabolism through reserving proper space in the growth and development environment condition. This obstacle of required space essential for growth substantially deteriorated planting and ultimately, it demonstrated lower tendency of photosynthetic rate, which is the highest level of metabolism.

  • Much of the Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee, USA is in mixed hardwoods for which there are no applicable growth and yield predictors. Use of site index as a variable in growth and yield prediction models is limited in most stands because their history is not known and many may not be even-aged. Landtypes may offer an alternative to site index for these mixed stands because they were designed to include land of about equal productivity. To determine vegetation by landtype, dependency between landtype and detailed forest type was tested with Chi-square. Differences in productivity among landtypes were tested by employing regression analyses and analysis of variance(ANOVA). Basal area growth was fitted to the nonlinear models developed by Moser and Hall(1969). Basal area growth and volume growth were also predicted as a function of initial total basal area and initial volume with linear regression by landtype and by landtype class. Differences in basal area growth and volume growth by landtype were tested with ANOVA. Dependency between site class and landtype was tested with Chi-square. Vegetation types seem to be related to landtypes in the study area although the validity of the test is questionable because of a high proportion of sparsely occupied cells. No statistically significant differences in productivity among landtypes were found in this study.

  • Effects of nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) and potassium (K) on the shoot and bulb growth of wild garlic ($Allium$ $victorialis$ var. $platyphyllum$) were studied by adopting $in$ $vitro$ culture. These macronutrients influenced the growth of both the shoot and bulb of garlic depending upon their application doses. A minimum of 3% potassium nitrate ($KNO_3$) as a source of nitrogen was found to be critical for shoot elongation while higher concentrations were inhibitory. Garlic bulb growth was profuse on the usual $KNO_3$ strength and sucrose (7%), followed by $KNO_3$ (9.4 mM) supplement. On providing 41.22 mM ammonium nitrate ($NH_4NO_3$) as nitrogen source highest shoot growth was observed while 82.45 mM $NH_4NO_3$ as a source of nitrogen supported high bulb growth. With regard to potassium a good shoot growth was observed in medium that contained 0.31 mM $KH_2PO_4$ and 3% sucrose, while bulb growth was high on 2.5 mM $KH_2PO_4$ and 7% sucrose. These experiments may thus direct the development of excellent growth conditions for the commercial production of edible wild garlic.
