1,4-Dioxane-degrading bacterial consortia were enriched from forest soil (FS) and activated sludge (AS) using a defined medium containing 1,4-dioxane as the sole carbon source. These two enrichments cultures appeared to have inducible tetrahydrofuran/dioxane and propane degradation enzymes. According to qPCR results on the 16S rRNA and soluble di-iron monooxygenase genes, the relative abundances of 1,4-dioxane-degrading bacteria to total bacteria in FS and AS were 29.4% and 57.8%, respectively. For FS, the cell growth yields (Y), maximum specific degradation rate ($V_{max}$), and half-saturation concentration ($K_m$) were 0.58 mg-protein/mg-dioxane, $0.037mg-dioxane/mg-protein{\cdot}h$, and 93.9 mg/l, respectively. For AS, Y, $V_{max}$, and $K_m$ were 0.34 mg-protein/mg-dioxane, $0.078mg-dioxane/mg-protein{\cdot}h$, and 181.3 mg/l, respectively. These kinetics data of FS and AS were similar to previously reported values. Based on bacterial community analysis on 16S rRNA gene sequences of the two enrichment cultures, the FS consortium was identified to contain 38.3% of Mycobacterium and 10.6% of Afipia, similar to previously reported literature. Meanwhile, 49.5% of the AS consortium belonged to the candidate division TM7, which has never been reported to be involved in 1,4-dioxane biodegradation. However, recent studies suggested that TM7 bacteria were associated with degradation of non-biodegradable and hazardous materials. Therefore, our results showed that previously unknown 1,4-dioxane-degrading bacteria might play an important role in enriched AS. Although the metabolic capability and ecophysiological significance of the predominant TM7 bacteria in AS enrichment culture remain unclear, our data reveal hidden characteristics of the TM7 phylum and provide a perspective for studying this previously uncultured phylotype.

The study examines two different sites to analyze the difference of stream channel profile between two different landuse areas on Neponset River, Boston, MA. Landuse represents the current status of land in terms of human, agricultural or forest, industry and environmental activity types. According to the previous research, forest and urban area are significantly distinguished in chemical characteristic, shape and bed load of the stream. On the chosen sites, I look at the cross-section profile, the slope, velocity, and roughness of the channels. With the data collected at the site I determined the value for the channel bed material using Manning's equation, and compared with the result of HEC-RAS model with the cross-section profile data I measured. In the forest area, water surface elevation and bed material obtained through Manning's equation are very close to HEC-RAS model result. However, in the resident area the Manning's 'n' value calculated much higher than assumption which was considered as cobble whose 'n' value is 0.03-0.06. The difference could be caused by unusual steep elevation on the site and the dam present down further. With the steep elevation upside of dam, there is critical-depth condition occurs. The difference of Manning's 'n' value reflects the difference of depth. HEC-RAS model was run to analyze the difference and the result shows that depth is 0.36 much less than 0.688 what I computed when the Manning's n value is 0.03(cobble) instead of the result of the study (0.13292). Beside, dam is a major source of fragmentation and degradation of stream, and it's possibly inferred upstream water levels are increased and stream velocity is decreased. This study is meaningful for introduction of HEC-RAS in geography field to analyze different sites with channel bed material, and it is going to be used more actively to manage river and river side.
UN-REDD (United Nations programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation in Developing Countries) and AR-CDM (Afforestation/Reforestation-Clean Development Mechanism) is currently being emerged as one of important mechanism to reduce carbon dioxide in relation to the deforestation. Discussion on North Korea as UN-REDD/AR-CDM project target continues with a view to preventing deforestation and to securing CER(certified emission reduction) for South Korea. The forests in Mt. Baekdu are degraded, deforestation is occurred, nevertheless, portion of forested area is still high, where both REDD and AR-CDM investment potential are quite high. Accordingly, this study is intended to explore a simultaneous registration potential to UNREDD/AR-CDM for Mt. Baekdu although separate registration to UN-REDD or AR-CDM has already gained worldwide recognition as a typical method in the process of GHG (Greenhouse Gas) reduction project. The results indicate that selecting UN-REDD or AR-CDM in accordance with sub-watershed forest condition could capture 53.2% more carbon dioxide than REDD alone and 21.9% more than AR-CDM alone. It is anticipated that this research output could be used as a realistic evidence to introduce carbon sequestering project in accordance with sub-watershed forest condition.
In this study, we produced bioethanol from the original hydrolysate obtained during oxalic acid pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass. The bioethanol was separated and concentrated by pervaporation and the residue after pervaporation was evaluated for its antioxidant activity. Xylose ($37.28g/{\ell}$) was the major product in the original hydrolysate. The original hydrolysate contained acetic acid, furfural and total phenolic compounds (TPC) as fermentation inhibitors. Acetic acid was removed by electrodialysis (ED), and $12.21g/{\ell}$ of bioethanol was produced from ED-treated hydrolysate. The TPC of ethyl acetate extracts from the residue obtained (OA-E) during pervaporation was 86.81 mg/100 g (extract). The $IC_{50}$ values of DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities, and reducing power of OA-E were $0.87mg/m{\ell}$, $0.85mg/m{\ell}$, and $0.59mg/m{\ell}$, respectively. Sugar degradation products and the phenolic compounds in OA-E were determined by GC-MS.
With the aim to investigation of decay resistance and optimum concentration in chrome-copper-arsenic(CCA) preservative treatment on the imported softwoods from Siberia and North america, preservative absorption after CCA impregnation, weight losses and degradation patterns by decay fungi were examined. The density and latewood rate of Siberia softwoods(Spruce and Larch) were higher than those of North america softwoods(Douglas-fir and Western hemlock), resulting in the decrease of the CCA preservative absorption in the Siberia softwoods. In the case of untreated softwoods, decay resistance against Coriolus versicolor was lower than against Tyromyces palustris. For CCA treated softwoods, preservative effectiveness increased with increase in concentration of CCA solution. When treated with 0.7% CCA solution, efficiency value was more than 80 and 90 for C. versicolor and T. palustris, respectively. From this results, in the CCA preservative treatment for imported softwoods, it can be concluded that optimum concentration of CCA solution is approximately 0.7%. The absorption of CCA preservative distributed in the range of 3.8 and $5.5kg/m^3$. After exposure to testing fungi, in the untreated softwoods, bore holes formed in the cell walls and bordered pits, moreover, bordered pit canals enlarged by the fungi. However, 0.5% CCA treated softwoods was almost no deterioration in the cell walls and bordered pits due to decay.

This study was carried out to determine the relationships between cellulose decomposition and soil environmental factors in larch (Larix leptolepis) and pine (red pine: Pinus densiflora; rigitaeda pine: P. rigida ${\times}$ P. taeda) species planted in the same year (1963). The variation of cellulose mass loss with soil temperature, soil pH, soil $CO_2$ efflux rates, and soil water content was measured monthly for 4 months (July, August, September and October 2006) from three coniferous plantations. Mean mass loss rates during the study period were generally more rapid in rigitaeda pine (6.5 $mg\;g^{-1}\;day^{-1}$) than in red pine (6.2 $mg\;g^{-1}\;day^{-1}$) or larch (6.1 $mg\;g^{-1}\;day^{-1}$) plantations, although the mass loss rates were not significantly different among three tree species (P > 0.05). Cellulose mass loss rates among three tree species were positively correlated with soil temperature (red pine: r = 0.77, P < 0.05; rigitaeda pine: r = 0.59, P < 0.05; larch: r = 0.48, P < 0.05) at the 20 cm soil depth, while the mass loss rates were negatively correlated with soil pH (red pine: r = -0.63, P < 0.05; rigitaeda pine: r = -0.47, P < 0.05; larch: r = -0.43, P < 0.05). There was a significant correlation between cellulose mass loss and soil $CO_2$ efflux rates except for regitaeda pine plantation, while no significant correlation (P > 0.05) between cellulose mass loss and soil water content in larch or rigitaeda pine. The results suggest that cellulose mass loss rates in soil layers depend on the different soil environmental factors caused by tree species.
Background: Tropical montane forests played an important role in the provision of ecosystem services. The intense degradation and deforestation for the need of agricultural land expansion result in a significant decline of forest cover. However, the expansion of agricultural land did not completely destruct natural forests. There remain forests inaccessible for agricultural and grazing purpose. Studies on these forests remained scant, motivating to investigate biomass and soil carbon stocks. Data of biomass and soils were collected in 80 quadrats ($400m^2$) systematically in 5 forests. Biomass and disturbance gradients were determined using allometric equation and disturbance index, respectively. The regression modeling is employed to explore the spatial distribution of carbon stock along disturbance and environmental gradients. Correlation analysis is also employed to identify the relation between site factors and carbon stocks. Results: The result revealed that a total of 1655 individuals with a diameter of ${\geq}5cm$, representing 38 species, were measured in 5 forests. The mean aboveground biomass carbon stocks (AGB CS) and soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks at 5 forests were $191.6{\pm}19.7$ and $149.32{\pm}6.8Mg\;C\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. The AGB CS exhibited significant (P < 0.05) positive correlation with SOC and total nitrogen (TN) stocks, reflecting that biomass seems to be a general predictor of SOCs. AGB CS between highly and least-disturbed forests was significantly different (P < 0.05). This disturbance level equates to a decrease in AGB CS of 36.8% in the highly disturbed compared with the least-disturbed forest. In all forests, dominant species sequestrated more than 58% of carbon. The AGB CS in response to elevation and disturbance index and SOC stocks in response to soil pH attained unimodal pattern. The stand structures, such as canopy cover and basal area, had significant positive relation with AGB CS. Conclusions: Study results confirmed that carbon stocks of studied forests were comparable to carbon stocks of protected forests. The biotic, edaphic, topographic, and disturbance factors played a significant variation in carbon stocks of forests. Further study should be conducted to quantify carbon stocks of herbaceous, litter, and soil microbes to account the role of the whole forest ecosystem.

Preventive conservation is one of most important issues in the field of conservation for paper-records. Many researchers have been studied environmental factors such as effects of humidity, temperature, biological attack and air pollutants. Air pollutants strongly associated with oxidative and hydrolytic degradation of cellulose. It is important to control air pollutants in storage environment to improve stabilities of conservation environment. Four paper samples have been analyzed for their accelerated aging characteristics by air pollutants, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide. Physical and optical properties and weight molar masses(Mw) showed that interactions between air pollutants and paper sample. Nitrogen dioxide, ozone caused severe damage to cellulose in paper by hydrolytic and oxidative decompositions during aging.
UNFCCC(United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) agreed with Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation(REDD). It is necessary to develop the method of REDD suitability assessment in national scale. Existing researches suggested projection methods of deforestation area by many deforestation factors, but the causes of deforestation were different by regions. Therefore, in this study, REDD suitability in Kon Tum province in Vietnam was analyzed by several significant deforestation factors. REDD suitability value was computed using the Fuzzy set. As a result, all deforestation factors related to deforestation area and the REDD suitability value was the highest in Sa Thay district, Dak Glei district, Kon Plong district and Dak Ha district. These provinces have high biodiversity, on the other hand deforestation problem has been occurred.

Biocomposite was organized with biodegradable polymer and natural fiber that has potential to be used as replacement for glass fiber reinforced polymer composite with the benefits of low cost, low density, acceptable specific strength, biodegradability, etc. Until now, non-wood fibers have been used as reinforcements of biocomposite which are all plant-based fibers. The present study focused on investigating the fabrication and characterization of biocomposite reinforced with red algae fiber. The bleached red algae fiber(BRAF) showed very similar crystallinity to the cellulose. It has high stability against thermal degradation (maximum thermal decomposition temperature of 359.3$^{\circ}C$) and thermal expansion. Biocomposites reinforced with BRAF have been fabricated by a compression molding method and their mechanical and thermal properties have been studied. The storage modulus and the thermomechanical stability of PBS matrix are markedly improved with reinforcing the BRAF. These results support that the red algae fiber can be used as an excellent reinforcement of biocomposites as "green-composite" or "eco-composite".
